in which we take water aerobics and like it

So I decide it’s time to really and truly learn to swim and I register for the free classes available through NYC Parks. I registered for three pools, but got waitlisted for everything. At the last minute I ended up getting into a water aerobics class. Not what I wanted, but I took it.

Yes, this is me, paranoid person that I am, making sure that my strappy black one piece from Ami Clubwear not only fit, but was comfy for moving around in. I wanted to make sure that all bits and pieces stayed covered, and to make sure that I had lost enough weight not to embarrass myself.

Mission accomplished.

I’m lucky enough to live between two malls with Target stores, and it also turns out that both malls have a Modell’s across the street. I was able to quickly get the flip flops ($3.99 at Target) and latex swim cap ($2.99 at Modell’s) that I needed for class. Along with my Perrier x Dusen Dusen towel, I was set.

Inspired by an old issue of The Daily Front Row, I gave myself a quick manicure with Peacock Plume CND Vinylux Weekly polish ($10.50) layered with glittery Titchy from butter London and sealed with Probelle Beauty Topcoat Sealer.

It was late afternoon when I got to the pool. The place was crowded with kids streaming out of the building with wet hair and towels flung around their shoulders like capes. I have never been a pool person like that, so it was all new to me. I packed a bag and made sure I had a snack to either console myself for doing badly or to congratulate myself for doing well.

swim7Once everyone had cleared out of the building, my class trooped in and got changed. At first I wasn’t sure that my over-sized lock tote would even fit, but I managed to squeeze everything in. Check it out- me as a latex capped Olympic swimmer!

Even though I can’t swim…

swim8The first class went ok- it was just exercising and jogging under water in the shallow end of the pool. The next day, I threw on my floral retro two piece and some overalls and headed back. I wasn’t as nervous about who else was going to be there or if people were going to judge me by my suit, bag or clothes so I just threw on my Supra footwear Cuttler sneakers from last year and put everything in that tote bag that I got at the DenTek party. Done.

I had my Tommy Bahama towel from that party, the flip flops, and I made sure to pack my Tata Harper Beautifying Face Oil ($48) and Irridescent Revitalizing Body Oil (limited edition) and rosebud lip balm for after being in the pool. After an hour of underwater jogging, stretching, leg lifts and arm exercises it was a joy to come out into the warm summer night.  swim91

My living room floor, where swim stuff has replaced running gear until summer ends… I love the fact that my apartment has that chlorine scent and that all my stuff is getting used the way they were intended, not just for styling.

Last night after a day or running up and down, I hurriedly switched into my black swimsuit, then threw on some jorts and a blue chambray blouse from Southern Tide ($89) with my usual sandals. The class ends this week, and now that I’m comfortable in the water I can’t wait to sign up for swimming classes.

There’s also the fact that the pool is right near Ikea… which reminds me that with fall coming, I still have projects around the house to work on.

Next up: Summer Streets 2015
