The Red Bodysuit

This red bodysuit is the business.

SO! I was at a sale at this upscale store and I found this most gorgeous red bodysuit. The fabric feels and looks like crepe jersey, it’s beautifully sewn, and has a cutout that extends across the back to the sides. The color, a full tomato saucian red, is sizzling. It just doesn’t have any label, so I can’t tell the brand or designer.

Whomp whomp.

Which didn’t stop me from snapping it up. No label doesn’t mean low quality. Look how elegant it looks with this swanky Banana Republic circle skirt and Steve Madden glitter boots. For going to the store or casually doing laundry while a photographer snaps every move. Just a normal outfit…

Or you could do this kind of 80s’ish look with some split sided track shorts (and tube socks and shower slides for the win). The shorts are not for sale- I’m really loving them? They’re from C&C California, but I found them at Century 21.

Red crepe jersey cutout bodysuit, size XS

Measures 26 inches from shoulder to crotch. 13 inches from armpit to armpit, unstretched. Waist covers about 8 inches in front. Hips are 12 across, unstretched. Sleeves are 21 inches long. Cutout is 8 x 14. *Shipping is included in the price. **I only sell/ship in the United States.

$52.00

Banana Republic Circle Skirt, size 6

Looks like duchesse satin, made of nylon/spandex/elastane with a polyester lining. Slash pockets at each hip. Wear with a T-shirt and cardigan, sheer blouse, bodysuit, bandeau top, corset or tank top. As versatile as a pair of jeans. Great condition. Measures 25 inches from waist to hem. Waist is 14 inches across, no stretch. 24 inches across the hips. Skirt flares out to 40 inches at the hem. *Shipping is included in the price. **I only sell/ship in the United States.

$45.00

Steve Madden Harpir Booties, size 7.5

Rock star studded, glittery Steve Madden Harpir Booties in pewter. Sleek, pointed toe and 3 inch stiletto heel. From skirts to jeans, super wearable and versatile. Brand new, never worn. *Shipping is included in the price. **I only sell/ship in the United States.

$110.00

Art Deco style acrylic bracelet, OS

Handmade black and silver stretch cuff is lightweight plastic and resin with sparkling oversized rhinestones. Has that punk with a side of debutante thing going on. Fits comfortably on a 7 inch wrist. *Shipping is included in the price. **I only sell/ship in the United States.

The Plantpets

I live in Brooklyn, and while I love my apartment, there is one thing that makes me a little less satisfied with it: I can’t have pets. When I signed the lease they told me that if I bring in anything with legs there will be consequences. Most of the time I don’t care, but the other day I found out that someone’s got a dog on the 5th floor and it’s gotten me very upset. So I spent some time doting on my plantpets, see above.

I bought these in teeny tiny pots at home depot last year, and I recently re-potted them because I live in an apartment with no pets. Funny thing, those teeny pots were holding them back. They’ve plumped out and each grew at least an inch the first week in larger surroundings. Like they were just waiting to bust out and unfurl.

On the one hand, boring post right? But on the other hand, think about what’s confining you and keeping you from being amazing. Can you change it? Do you want to? Maybe you need a caring gardener to lift you out of your tight spot.

Think about it.

The Salad Bowl

So yesterday I went to Soho because there was a sale I wanted to check out, and I ended up at Crate & Barrel. I just meant to browse or maybe get a planter for my homegrown lemon tree, but instead I got this stuff ($15 total, because I am cheap). And out of all of these things, the most important is the salad bowl.

See, I’m on a diet- or rather I’m going back on a diet, or really I’m doing everything I can to guide myself towards better food choices. I went to Dean & Deluca, which I always do when I’m in that neighborhood, and instead of coffee and pastry I did an iced chai with a banana. I am super proud because D&D makes fire baked goods and I did not waver. Which brings us to salads:

I love salad and while salad tastes good in anything, most of the time I’m eating one out of a plastic takeout bowl (recycling!) with a plastic fork (I re-use those, too). This salad was delicious, full of fresh greens, crispy carrots and cucumbers, perfectly boiled eggs and premium Tonnino’s tuna. It tasted amazing, too. But I know how I am and I need to stunt a little so when I saw the bowl, I knew that it was a match made in salad instagramming heaven.

This salad is just a pile of random stuff in a bowl- but look at the bowl! How can you not want to nom everything in it? And it was $2.57! Lightweight but sturdy melamine and looking like an egg yolk pouring out of blindingly white shell. It is pure salad motivation. Btw, this was actually tasty. Chopped salad greens, avocado slices, roasted sweet plantain, ground peanuts roasted with bbq sauce, and slivers of white onion. Topped with cheddar cheese, for color as well as taste. I think I enjoyed it more because it was nestled in bowl perfection.

I just blogged about my bowl to show off, and to show that no matter how you get there, eating good food makes you feel like your best self. Feel free to tell me about what motivates you to eat properly! (Or not, it’s all good).

See ya next time!

The PUNK Jacket

Photo by Shoottphotos (use this link for a 10% discount: https://shoott.com/?ref=LQAW9BC)

Handpainted PUNK denim jacket by SEB Market BK, $150

This adorable jacket went from worst to first with some handpainting, embroidered patches, safety pins and sweet punk rock stars. It's an extra small, and measures 20 inches from shoulder to hem, 17 inches from armpit to armpit. 14 inches across the back. Sleeves are 24.5 inches long. Jacket comes with a pouch of extra stars for you to play with. *Domestic, American shipping only.

$150.00

So while I was gone from blogging I started selling pre-loved and vintage clothes on platforms like ebay, depop and etsy. At first it was just straightforward selling, like I wasn’t altering the pieces, just posting them. Then one day I rescued a Coach bag that had worn patches on the front and a busted strap, but was perfect on the back and interior. I messed with it and it ended up selling on ebay. Then I played with a thrifted red leather vintage 80s crossbody that I had in my inventory for about 2 years. Then I sold a sweatshirt. So now I’m a fashion designer with my own label. Why fight fate?

The PUNK jacket started life as a mass produced item treated to look like an authentic punk rockers jacket. Soft, distressed lightwash denim with a screenprinted band poster on the back. Originally created by Bethany Mota, I saw it and knew that I could do better.

I decided to punch up the faded colors on the back panel with acrylic paint, and then adding a silver leather star I got at the fabric store. I used black paint to emphasize lines and to punk up the PUNK lettering. I used gold and black to create a frame, and then put a safety pin at each corner (because punk rock). I chose silver stars instead of pyramid studs for a girly touch. Recently I painted the arms and inside of the cuffs for more edge.

What I love about is that it reminds me of movies like She’s Gotta Have It and Desperately Seeking Susan, 80s films with cool downtown heroines that whipped up fashion frenzy in every scene. You can wear it with sparkles or dress it down with jorts. Layer it over a hoodie in the cooler months to keep that Nancy Spungeon look going.

in which we FINALLY go to Red Hook Flicks and see Goodfellas

redhookflicks

I have been dying to go to Red Hook Flicks since forever. I wanted to go at the beginning of the summer, but never got around to it. Then I found out that it was the last film of the summer, so I had to get myself together and go. It didn’t hurt that I happen to love Goodfellas anyway.

rhf2

To celebrate the end of summer, I finally shimmied into my white twill pants from LL Bean Signature, which have been languishing on a chair since I got them. A lightweight tshirt from BDG, my trusty SUPRA footwear sneakers and a few spritzes of Island Life by Tommy Bahama finished that off. I threw this massive beach towel from Life is good into my Ami Clubwear faux leather lock tote and I was off. I threw on my Le Grand Hat because I could.

rhf4

After almost getting lost on the bus, I got to enjoy walking through Red Hooks industrial area during sunset. Even though I went to water aerobics in the neighborhood, afterwards it was dark and except for that jaunt to Ikea, I just wanted to go home. It was a pleasant surprise to see such lovely waterfront parks.

rhf5

Do you see a familiar American Landmark in these photos?

rhf7

You can see the same landmark from Valentino Pier where Red Hook Flicks camps out during the summer.  rhf6 It was actually smaller than I thought! The community run, weekly outdoor movie is in a small area, and people just come up and throw down blankets, tarps, beach towels, and the like. It’s really cozy. I came with someone, but they annoyed me so I sent them away. I mean, don’t go somewhere and have a bad attitude. No one has time for that. So after a summer of running around and socializing, I ended up going to the movies alone. As usual.

rhf8

I hate to admit it, but I really enjoyed it once I was by myself. My beach blanket was super soft, and there was more than enough room on it for me to stretch out. I could hear the movie perfectly, and after a summer of talking I could just be blissfully quiet. It was kind of like being at a slumber party, but with strangers and outside. The worst thing was that the ground is naturally damp and over the course of the 2 hour and 8 minute Scorsese masterpiece the damp starts seeping in, but that was the only quibble.

I have never done an outdoor movie, so I thought I’d be distracted, but the story held. It was just as riveting as the first time I’d seen it. Goodfellas, in case you didn’t know, is the story of a guy who lives to be in the mob. If you haven’t seen it, you should, it’s amazing.

Closeup: an interview with Florent Biais of Le Grand Hat

I don’t normally do sit-down interviews because I’m too lazy. I hate taping conversations because I’ll have to play them back and later and, heaven forbid, have to write or type everything. I avoid sitdowns like the plague.

But sometimes you have to make an exception.  lgh3

Remember that time we went to the Brooklyn Museum and met the French Guy with the hat? Well, there you go. I had to go over to this place called Bluebird on Flatbush Avenue to talk to Florent Biais who managed to designed the funniest and most stylish hat in New York right now, Le Grand Hat.

lgh1

This actually wasn’t the biggest hardship, because I live nearby and was able to get some exercise and enjoy a late summer evening. I’d never been to Bluebird anyway. It turned out to be a cool place that has a back garden where you can actually peek at people waiting for the train at Prospect Park station. It’s nice. The waitress was pretty insistent, and came over a lot but that’s better than when they ignore you and you sit around wondering why you have nothing to eat.

It’s also across the street from the best discount store in Brooklyn (maybe the world?) Phat Albert’s. Turns out Florent and I share an interest in the place. I go trolling for ideas there and so does he. It’s a small worls, and it gets even smaller when you find out French guys are shopping at the discunt store, too.

lgh2

So here we go…

SEB: What inspired you to create that hat?

Florent Biais: That’s a good question. Well, I live here (in Flatbush), a Jamaican neighborhood. So I guess I didn’t realize it at first, but I think seeing Rastafarians with their locs wrapped was something for sure. It creates this huge structure. And the top hat was a big influence because of the stupidity of it. The nonsensical attitude of it. You know, fashion is something like that. It’s something just weird.

And I really love the hat culture in the US because we don’t have that anymore in Europe.

SEB: People don’t wear hats in Europe?

FB: No, not any more! We kind of initiated all these crazy hats and stuff back in the day, but not anymore. Except some American influenced sportswear like the baseball hat, but that’s an American thing. So I was fascinated by that when I arrived here, that the US is more inclined to wear hats than we are. And that’s cool. I love hats.

lgh5

SEB: Did you study fashion design?

FB: No, I didn’t I studied architecture. I’m an architect, actually.

SEB: Your instagram seems really fashion-y, like you go out a lot…

FB: No. I wish. You have your real life and your instagram life.

sean ross

SEB: But wait, I saw a photo of Shaun Ross wearing your hat! How did that happen?

FB: Ok, I can tell you a story. My soon-to-be wife [FB is getting married this month! Congrats!!] is a pediatrics nurse and she helped deliver a baby to a couple and they were so into her that they invited us to the bris. So there we were, and after that we became friends. I talked about my project to them and the guy, who is in the movie industry, was really into the hat. He has a desk in a co-working space and he talked about it to a photographer who used to work with Shaun Ross a lot and she said he would love it.

She decided to use the hat in a photo shoot with him for NYFW, so I gave her one so she could put it on his head. It didn’t happen, because NYFW is crazy, but she gave my friend his personal address and I sent him a hat. I wasn’t really paying attention, but then two months later a guy tagged me in a picture and it was everywhere. Shaun was wearing it while meeting Winnie Harlow.

I thought he didn’t like it!

Photo by Florent Biais/Le Grand Hat
Photo by Florent Biais/Le Grand Hat

After we finished talking,Florent takes out a hat and gives it to me. I immediately put it on. People start complimenting me. It’s that kind of hat. When I got home I started messing with it right away. All that other stuff I’m supposed to be reviewing? Totally forgotten.

lgh6

At first, I kind of thought that I would have to dress up to work the hat, but quickly realized that I could wear pretty much anything and the hat was literally the cherry on top. It did bring out some punk tendencies, because it’s the perfect frame for the face. I wore it to Glossier’s showroom down in Soho and got tons of compliments and lots of likes on instagram. After awhile, I was just throwing it on to go to the store. It’s cool without trying and it kind of fascinates people.

I love it.

Get your own Le Grand Hat for $38 each at sqst.bigcartel.com, $58 for customized pieces. You can also get customized pieces. Keep up with Florent’s instalife at instagram.com/legrandhat .

Next up: We go see Goodfellas at Red Hook Flicks
