The Friends

I’m not going to say how, but I managed to get into the sold-out Friends NYC Pop-up and it’s pretty much everything you’d expect. Check it out. Could it BE anymore perfect?

Way back in the day, before we all just inhaled shows like air and had to watch commercials, there was this weekly sitcom(situation comedy, fyi) called FRIENDS. It was about some people who were friends. The show became a global phenomenon, with the six stars becoming the white hot focus of all the attention that we now lavish on instagram models. They were the Insecure of the 90s/00s.

If you ever thought about how cool it would be cavort on a couch in front of a fountain, the time has come. Awesome replica of the California set created to replicate a New York area that doesn’t exist.

How cute is this?

Character memorabilia is everywhere…of course, right? Including surprises like Rachel’s wigs. This pinstraight, highlighted and blonded bob wig is life. I want one. I’m also in LOVE with this outfit. No one cuts skirts this way anymore. I also feel like shortsleeved turtlenecks are a forgotten treasure.

I don’t want to give away every little thing, but i loved the way this experience brings the show into three dimensional life all around you. Part of the reason that the show was so popular is that people can easily imagine themselves as part of Central Perk gang. Eminently relatable, even at it’s most chaotic and silly moments, the show has become an ever present background noise that’s both comforting and endlessly amusing.

The show is sold out and I got to see it through sheer universal accident? But if you’re in NYC you can try their standby line at 76 Mercer. There’s also a retail shop at 503 Broadway with a timed ticket and standby line. Check them out here for more info.

BTW, since because this blog is about me, here’s an ootd. It was a cool rainy evening and the first time that I had to layer up. I handpainted the back of this Forever 21 camo shirtjacket (which I bought on depop from yakiecast), and wore it over a thrifted Gap pinstriped button down and Hanes v-neck tshirt.

The soft, premium denim skinnies are Buffalo David Britton and found at Century 21. . Old Navy was selling umbrellas 2 for $10 and I got this sweet animal print one. I kind of liked this outfit, even though I had a time putting all my stuff in a purse the size of an eyeglass case (Erin Dana prince minaudiere, $180 for regular people, given away for free at my (former) fashion job). The whole outfir reminded me of the time Joey put on all of Chandler’s stuff.

Good times.

Are you a Friends fan? Who’s your favorite character? What is your stance on camo for fall? Are tiny purses really ‘it’? Discuss.

See you next time!

The Shopping Trip

I know I’ve been gone for a minute. The whole javascript pre-bootcamp bootcamp had me in an isolation tailspin. I had to re-learn going outside, talking to people about things other than coding and dealing with the fact that not going to the gym for three weeks straight has me eligible for fat camp.

But life goes on, and things keep happening so here I am again.

I am this awesome. My Closet Cleanse ootd with handpainted Old Navy hi-tops.

I follow celebrity stylist June Ambrose (if you don’t know who she is, she is the genius behind Missy Elliott’s groundbreaking looks in videos like The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)so she is actually iconic, for real with facts to back that up). She advertised her annual Closet Cleanse sale on instagram, happening at Selima Optique (she has a collab with them selling big, fabulous frames. I got excited, then looked at my credit card balance and deflated, but at the end of the day I got dressed and went.

I wore my Duryea’s t-shirt from Montauk Mainstay, DKNY super soft yoga culottes , my big ass Zeelol frames over the Polar Grey ttdeye contacts (I like making people question whether my eyes or glasses are fake. ) and the Old Navy sneakers that I made into wearable art. A very special summertime outfit- plus my new wig, which we’ll talk about later. See above collage.

June Ambrose’s Closet Cleanse event at Selima Optique, Aug 17th.

I was late because I had convinced myself that it would be super crowded with awful women fighting and snatching and being fashion crazy. It reminded me of when I was a kid and my mom would force me to go outside. I had to be my own mom and motivate myself to leave the house and interact with other humans while possibly getting some bargains. It was real.

Once I got there, it was kind of mellow. The power shoppers had been and gone with a lull for lunch that I stepped into. The racks were scattered throughout the front of the store. Bins with $10 items were on the floor and there were piles of merch on the counters. It was heaven for thrifters.

Display cases were full of opulent accessories. Hermes, Maison Martin Margiela, and more.

The sale started at 11 am and I got there around two, so I missed a lot, but there were still great items everywhere. I saw Chanel, Givenchy, Marc Jacobs, and labels that I had never heard of. Between my budget and the fact that I’ve been shopping for months (both for me and for inventory) I might have gone crazy.

I got three things, and while I was standing on line June Ambrose came up, looked at my stuff and gave me an additional discount on this Margaret M. pencil skirt. I am not good at dealing with celebrities, so I don’t have a selfie with her, I didn’t take photos of her, and I didn’t want to be all up her butt so I didn’t even really start a conversation with her. I figured that everyone who came to the sale knew she was famous because how else did you know about the sale? It was nice of her to give me a discount, though. Customer service is customer service no matter who gives it to you, so 5 stars on the customer service!

I spent the money I saved at June’s daughter’s table outside. Summer Hope Chamblin, who is prominently featured on her mom’s instafeed, was out on the street in front of the boutique selling watermelon lemonade and various baked goods. She kind of made me buy this chocolate chip cookie (I’m not a fan) which I ended up liking, and I got two oatmeal raisin cookies to eat with my Dean and Deluca honey vanilla latte. Anytime I go out to Soho, especially if there’s shopping involved, I have to stop in there for a treat.

Turned out to be an ok Saturday afternoon!

Do you ever have a hard time leaving the house to do things? Does it sometimes feel too hard to face the world of people lurking outside? What is the one thing that can tip you out of bed and out the door? Talk amongst yourselves.

See you next time!

Everyone is mad for the 70s (still, again) and I was thinking about what would inspire me to jump on that vibe. What does 70s mean to me? And then I remembered this:

My mom had this album, an Diana Ross’s fake eyelashes and perfect coif on the back cover mesmerized me. Was this being grownup?

in which we FINALLY go to Red Hook Flicks and see Goodfellas

redhookflicks

I have been dying to go to Red Hook Flicks since forever. I wanted to go at the beginning of the summer, but never got around to it. Then I found out that it was the last film of the summer, so I had to get myself together and go. It didn’t hurt that I happen to love Goodfellas anyway.

rhf2

To celebrate the end of summer, I finally shimmied into my white twill pants from LL Bean Signature, which have been languishing on a chair since I got them. A lightweight tshirt from BDG, my trusty SUPRA footwear sneakers and a few spritzes of Island Life by Tommy Bahama finished that off. I threw this massive beach towel from Life is good into my Ami Clubwear faux leather lock tote and I was off. I threw on my Le Grand Hat because I could.

rhf4

After almost getting lost on the bus, I got to enjoy walking through Red Hooks industrial area during sunset. Even though I went to water aerobics in the neighborhood, afterwards it was dark and except for that jaunt to Ikea, I just wanted to go home. It was a pleasant surprise to see such lovely waterfront parks.

rhf5

Do you see a familiar American Landmark in these photos?

rhf7

You can see the same landmark from Valentino Pier where Red Hook Flicks camps out during the summer.  rhf6 It was actually smaller than I thought! The community run, weekly outdoor movie is in a small area, and people just come up and throw down blankets, tarps, beach towels, and the like. It’s really cozy. I came with someone, but they annoyed me so I sent them away. I mean, don’t go somewhere and have a bad attitude. No one has time for that. So after a summer of running around and socializing, I ended up going to the movies alone. As usual.

rhf8

I hate to admit it, but I really enjoyed it once I was by myself. My beach blanket was super soft, and there was more than enough room on it for me to stretch out. I could hear the movie perfectly, and after a summer of talking I could just be blissfully quiet. It was kind of like being at a slumber party, but with strangers and outside. The worst thing was that the ground is naturally damp and over the course of the 2 hour and 8 minute Scorsese masterpiece the damp starts seeping in, but that was the only quibble.

I have never done an outdoor movie, so I thought I’d be distracted, but the story held. It was just as riveting as the first time I’d seen it. Goodfellas, in case you didn’t know, is the story of a guy who lives to be in the mob. If you haven’t seen it, you should, it’s amazing.
