The Waterfall

I found these awesome skinny jeans and decided that they needed an overhaul. Inspired by a pirate skull patch, and an Indiana Jones movie. Check this out.

Upcycled, handpainted SEB Market BK jeans, $150

It started with these J Brand skinny leg Heritage jeans. I was going to just add some patches, but when I got to the back pockets I was inspired to do something a bit more rad. I am going to admit that I had been up watching Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull which had me thinking about how this particular patch kind of looks like a treasure map. Then I thought about how cool it would be if it were a giant skull on a hilltop. If it’s on a hill top, it needed a waterfall. The waterfall needed to have a vein of gold and precious jewels running through it.

S o that’s how we got where we are now. With me selling a pair of jeans with a whole butt to hem waterfall on the back. Life is amazing.

I love the idea of someone just wearing this in a glamtastic but basic way. Jeans and a sweatshirts but fashion. This gold foil Star Wars C3PO inspired sweatshirt from Eleven Paris ($75) is a perfect case of basic fashion with a twist and the gold plays into the treasure hunting conceit of the waterfall. Add some sparkly rhinestone statement barrettes ($10 each), gently used Blackstone IL65 leather sneakers ($50), and this upcycled faux fur with silver leather studded skull and fanciful sequinned flower ($400) for a winter look that’s super toasty because it’s so fire.

The front of the jeans are handpainted with acrylic paint smears and splatters, plus patches, studs on the watchpocket and a fringed hem. Soft, premium denim is comfortably broken in so from the minute you put them on, you’re home.

See you next time!

The Tattooed Shorts

Loox temporary tattoos looking sweet on sundrenched denim cutoffs.

I have been working on these shorts for a year.Technically. I got these jeans free from L.L. Bean (blogger perk) and one day decided to make cutoffs from them. Then I thought I would rehab the cutoffs, so I put them on my crafts trolley. Then I forgot about them, because I was working and somehow there was never any time or inspiration to finish my pile of design projects. It was sad. I wanted to do my thing, but coming home after work, I usually would just huddle in bed, watch netflix and try to go to sleep so I could go to work again. Working on my projects seemed to hard.

Lately I’ve been super inspired (might be because of exercising and better diet, I’m not so depressed), so I’ve been going through my project pile and finally finishing some things, like these cutoffs. I was on instagram and saw an ad for temporary tattoos, and I thought…’YES’!!!

It started with some dipdye bleaching until I had a variety of blues playing across the cotton fabric. Then I started applying the temporary tattoo, which was a few days of my life. First transferring the tattoo to the cloth, then treating it to make sure that the tattoo didn’t just peel off. Waiting for things to dry is sheer torture. But I love the way it looks! I put a few clear, acrylic jewels on the petals like water drops.

Being ocd and sewing on little pearls because little pearls are everything.

Studded, but in a sweet, feminine, Gucci kind of way.

Laid back, beach bum chic.

This awesome carp tattoo looks amazing on the back pockets, across from the gold lame lined distressed pocket. All you need to look summer blessed is a vintage t-shirt and some glitter slides. These shorts are hand painted, distressed and embellished. They’re badass in the most effortless way.

And they only took a year to make.

See you next time!

The Red Bodysuit

This red bodysuit is the business.

SO! I was at a sale at this upscale store and I found this most gorgeous red bodysuit. The fabric feels and looks like crepe jersey, it’s beautifully sewn, and has a cutout that extends across the back to the sides. The color, a full tomato saucian red, is sizzling. It just doesn’t have any label, so I can’t tell the brand or designer.

Whomp whomp.

Which didn’t stop me from snapping it up. No label doesn’t mean low quality. Look how elegant it looks with this swanky Banana Republic circle skirt and Steve Madden glitter boots. For going to the store or casually doing laundry while a photographer snaps every move. Just a normal outfit…

Or you could do this kind of 80s’ish look with some split sided track shorts (and tube socks and shower slides for the win). The shorts are not for sale- I’m really loving them? They’re from C&C California, but I found them at Century 21.

Red crepe jersey cutout bodysuit, size XS

Measures 26 inches from shoulder to crotch. 13 inches from armpit to armpit, unstretched. Waist covers about 8 inches in front. Hips are 12 across, unstretched. Sleeves are 21 inches long. Cutout is 8 x 14. *Shipping is included in the price. **I only sell/ship in the United States.

$52.00

Banana Republic Circle Skirt, size 6

Looks like duchesse satin, made of nylon/spandex/elastane with a polyester lining. Slash pockets at each hip. Wear with a T-shirt and cardigan, sheer blouse, bodysuit, bandeau top, corset or tank top. As versatile as a pair of jeans. Great condition. Measures 25 inches from waist to hem. Waist is 14 inches across, no stretch. 24 inches across the hips. Skirt flares out to 40 inches at the hem. *Shipping is included in the price. **I only sell/ship in the United States.

That 70s Bag

Sexy 70s disco siren vibes (smell like a winner with Joy Forever by Jean Patou, a brilliant retro scent)

When I was a kid I was surrounded by women who had their stylistic business together. From my grandmother to my mom to my cousins, I had women around me who could teach Vogue a few lessons. I also had an Aunt in New Jersey who wore and sold vintage. Thanks to these style mavens, I can go blindly into a thrift store, hold my hand out, and have an awesome item fly into my hand like Mjolnir. In this instance, it was a sweet leather clutch bag with a bronze, abstract shaped snap on the front flap.

Clutch bags, like this delicious caramel colored one above, actually came into being in the 20s, so you’d probably see a flapper carrying one. All the better to emphasize that jazz age freedom exemplified by dresses that let women flail about doing the Charleston. This is probably what endeared the bag to the Studio 54 era fashionistas in the 70s and 80s. You could hold the bag under your arm while boogieing the night away.

This outfit samples both disco and punk to create a purely modern sex goddess look. The floral Almost Famous dress is ruched down the front with an asymmetrical hem, and reminds me of divas like Diana Ross or Donna Summer. I added a pair of Enzo Angiolini cutout t-strap pumps in caramel and gold for class (the disco era was heavily influenced by the 30s, so these would have been perfect!). Adding the American Rag rhinestone shouldered denim vest takes the look from discotheque to CBGB’s as quickly as a subway ride downtown.

The PUNK Jacket

Photo by Shoottphotos (use this link for a 10% discount: https://shoott.com/?ref=LQAW9BC)

Handpainted PUNK denim jacket by SEB Market BK, $150

This adorable jacket went from worst to first with some handpainting, embroidered patches, safety pins and sweet punk rock stars. It's an extra small, and measures 20 inches from shoulder to hem, 17 inches from armpit to armpit. 14 inches across the back. Sleeves are 24.5 inches long. Jacket comes with a pouch of extra stars for you to play with. *Domestic, American shipping only.

$150.00

So while I was gone from blogging I started selling pre-loved and vintage clothes on platforms like ebay, depop and etsy. At first it was just straightforward selling, like I wasn’t altering the pieces, just posting them. Then one day I rescued a Coach bag that had worn patches on the front and a busted strap, but was perfect on the back and interior. I messed with it and it ended up selling on ebay. Then I played with a thrifted red leather vintage 80s crossbody that I had in my inventory for about 2 years. Then I sold a sweatshirt. So now I’m a fashion designer with my own label. Why fight fate?

The PUNK jacket started life as a mass produced item treated to look like an authentic punk rockers jacket. Soft, distressed lightwash denim with a screenprinted band poster on the back. Originally created by Bethany Mota, I saw it and knew that I could do better.

I decided to punch up the faded colors on the back panel with acrylic paint, and then adding a silver leather star I got at the fabric store. I used black paint to emphasize lines and to punk up the PUNK lettering. I used gold and black to create a frame, and then put a safety pin at each corner (because punk rock). I chose silver stars instead of pyramid studs for a girly touch. Recently I painted the arms and inside of the cuffs for more edge.

What I love about is that it reminds me of movies like She’s Gotta Have It and Desperately Seeking Susan, 80s films with cool downtown heroines that whipped up fashion frenzy in every scene. You can wear it with sparkles or dress it down with jorts. Layer it over a hoodie in the cooler months to keep that Nancy Spungeon look going.

The Floral Raincoat

232584016 - Edited

So, hi! Hello! Bonjour! Wie gehts dir! Konnichiwa!

I meant to get back here sooner, but …life. And Polyvore, the app that I was using to post fashion content morphed into an e-commerce platform and I deleted all of my posts and was too busy trying to earn money like a real grown-up to write my blog posts again.

But I thought about it! A lot. I started blogging backwards (like everything else I do in life) so I actually started on Lucky Community and Examiner.com, both deceased sites now, before starting my wordpress blog. When those sites bombed out, I had the blog but I had lost interest in selfies and talking about myself. I felt kind of disassociated from regular life because I had made an existence out of being fake famous and getting free stuff that I didn’t deserve. A lot of free stuff. An embarrassing amount of free stuff. Enough to feel rotten because there are people who have no money, no home and can’t buy anything… like I used to be.I was homeless when I stared blogging, so that free stuff came in handy, but eventually I just felt weird about the whole thing.

Also a feeling like, what kind of weirdos randomly send out free stuff to strangers with no real qualifications? I literally got a random email to go to a party and get a free watch. Then they didn’t like me so I got the free watch but I never heard from them again. So that was another reason not to go places; they liked whatever I was posting but they didn’t like me. I started feeling like I wasn’t worth anything, so I just used polyvore, built up my online business and worked towards living a regular, buy what you want with money, life. Which helped a LOT. I love my life now. So of course I gave myself a photoshoot for my birthday.

SK_FAITH_BOWMAN_051819-048
Photo by Shoottphotos (use this link for a 10% discount: https://shoott.com/?ref=LQAW9BC)

I decided that for once I wanted my own photoshoot instead of shooting other people or products. I’m still not the prettiest, tallest or richest; but I like myself more. I go to the gym, eat healthy food and pay my bills mostly on time. I get my taxes done. And I pay actual money for things instead of getting them from pr firms. Which brings us to this glorious grey floral Guess raincoat. I picked it because I hate windbreakers and regular tan trenches bore me. I wanted a spring coat that satisfied my love for pretty girly things while keeping me from getting soaked in the rain. I wore it with a plain linen shirt/dress with eyelet lace detail and a funky floral Sondra Robertson  clutch with a wooden handle. Those glasses are from The Children’s Place and I found them at Goodwill.

It’s good to be home…

See you soon, Faith/SEB Market BK

in which we #TBT on Wednesday because we can time travel on this blog

I was going through folders trying to make up my mind what to do for my first 2016 post. Of course I got distracted. I found an old folder of images that I took to go with an Examiner.com post about fashion exhibits. I got drawn in by the sequins and flapper cool of Catherine Martin’s costumes for Gatsby all over again.

So my first post of 2016 is actually a look back.

Remember back in 2013 when Gatsby was the only movie to see? Here in New York, you could not get away from it. Which is not a bad thing, since it’s a Baz Luhrman spectacle, but… it reminds me of something I want to keep in mind this year.

Everybody loves you, until they don’t. Everybody thinks you’re cool, until the next cool thing comes along.

I’m keeping that in mind, not just about my blog or myself, but about what I endorse or chime in on. Am I playing into the game of making women want things they don’t need or am I expressing myself? Am I in it for you guys who read this, or just so I can climb out of (now) semi-poverty? My blog has given much, but can I take that for granted?

gats2

This exhibit was styled mannequins dressed in clothing, shoes, and other accessories seen in the movie.

The shoes are decadent, bejeweled, whimsical, and stunning.

DSC07148

DSC07153

DSC07157

Gatsby is in itself a look back. A look back at a classic book set in a classic time in history, and fashion. It’s about someone who can’t tear himself away from an old idea of something, and it kills him. Gatsby loved something that could only ever hurt him and make him feel less than perfect. His love is inherently self destructive, and his efforts to achieve success to capture a self-destructive love came to nothing in the end.

I don’t want to be a Gatsby, but I want to be something more than I am right now. I stared blogging because I had lost yet another job and I had nothing to lose. I was just looking for a way to promote my writing and photography. I was just looking for something to do. When I started doing this, I loved fashion the way Gatsby loved Daisy, all starry eyed and thinking it was my one true thing. But, luckily, blogging taught me something really important.

Blogging taught me about myself. It taught me about certain unrealistic tendencies, it taught me about what I would do to survive and blossom. It taught me how to blossom. Blogging gave me the courage to strike out and grow up. Blogging gave me things that I needed for the price of words and photos. More than any moment of me trying to be a writer/photographer, it was blogging that taught me the worth of my talent. I am valuable enough to attract all the things girls need…for free. That is some crazy stuff to think about.

Want lipstick? Here. Shoes? Here. Soap, perfume, clothes, laundry detergent, toothpaste? We’ll send it over. Come to this event, not only will we give you free stuff, but we’ll feed you delicacies and ply you with liquor. You don’t have to do anything but write a few words and post a few photos. That is intoxicating.

Until it stops. What if it stops? Should it stop? Or should I stop it?

That’s where I am right now. I want something, but it’s not the same thing I started out chasing. I’m glad I blog and I’m glad I got stuff (not as much as some, but more than others) because I needed all of it. But what next? And who am I now? Can I outgrow my inner Gatsby tendencies?

Everybody loves you, until they don’t. I feel like the trick is to love yourself enough to know that’s true.

in which we get a look at the boohoo aw2015 collection and #WeAreUSA campaign

bhm9

So remember last time, when we went over to boohoo clothing to see the men’s aw2015 collection and glimpsed this tray of jewelry? They were sweet enough to give me some info on what’s coming for the ladies both for ss2015 and aw2015!

because SEB is awesome.

bhw1

I got a copy of their newsletter, boo hoo Stylefix, which broadcast their summer social media campaign #WeAreUSA- featuring Angel Hayes,  and forecast the trends of the coming hot weather season. Be on the lookout for a Mexican and Western American influence, blue and white are hot, lace, and stealing from the boys in minimalistic, clean-lined pieces.

bhw2

This summer, the London based retailer has focused on the multifaceted nature of the millenial female, showcasing hip/punk, sweet Lolita, and athleisure styles on people like dj Hannah Bronfman. The prices are hyper affordable, and a community has sprung up around the #WeAreUSA hashtag. Biggest trend this summer? Being who you are.

bhw4

For the aw2015 collection the forecast is 70s. Leather look dresses with grommets and blouses with pussycat bows, instant sophistication. Also loving this plaid coat which is sweet without being sugary.

bhw5

Jump ahead to the 80s and the red neoprene motorcycle jacket with sleeve grommets can work with the fringey skirt or the denim outfit. Loving how the denim top works a frayed edge into the equation. bhw3

boohoo Night is a sexy collection of tailored, bodycon dresses and jumpsuits with cutouts and embellishments for serious holiday party appearances. Stay warm and cozy under this furry overcoat. Don’t forget your mittens!

in which we go and look at Etienne Aigner’s aw2015 collection

ea3

Oh, joy! One day last month, we were honored to receive an invitation to go and act like a famous person while viewing the new Etienne Aigner autumn/winter collection for 2015. As usual, it was the struggle of the ages to get myself together and get on the train. I think I had errands to run or something. By the time I finally made it to Manhattan I was already exhausted. These lovely flowers and colorful macarons were a delightful pick-me-up (but I ate no cookies! I was fasting that day) and put me in just the right mood to look at clothes, shoes and handbags.

ea4

I had decided t lumberjack it that day, with an idea towards looking as if I just come into the city from my sprawling estate in Westchester.

ea5

I wore my new custom-made hobo tote from REpurposing NOLA, as well as the nylon scarf that Traci gave me for Christmas. My brown chocolate brown velvet blazer was layered over a Mossimo flannel shirt and BDG burnout tee. Yes, those are the LL Bean True Shape denim jeans that I’ve been living in all winter, along with my beloved Corinne boots from Cat Footwear, $210. I also had my fave tech gadgets- my Samsung Galaxy S5 Active cameraphone and my UME Drive Millenium bracelet in hot orange.

ea8

These are the latest iteration of the company’s famous Stag Bag (last seen on Gigi Hadid at Coachella in trippy bronze metallic). The fringe is embellished with tiny metal studs, just enough hardware to make it cute.

ea1Etienne Aigner is also offering the rabbit fur sweater both in black and this cream/beige color. A rabbit fur vest has maroon streaks embedded in the black, reminiscent of the latest trends in haircolor. Fur is also applied to winter white bags, somewhat superfluously, but it could be cute.

ea6

I lusted after this olive canvas and rich russet brown leather lace-up boot. The shape of the foot was so elegant! The grommet embellished snakeskin flats were ok, but I really craved the ponyhair animal print penny loafers. Quelle chaude!

ea7

I really liked this textured retro jacket. Something like this is an instant ‘come up’ because you can pair it with something as basic as a v-neck t and denim skirt and look like you’re about something.

ea2

Great fashion images from the new collection.

ea9

These Eva pouches were encrusted with grommets for a hard-edged look. very chick if you’re into clutches.

ea91 On the way out, everyone got a pack of cards with images and info from the collection as well as a lovely leather-bound diary.

in which we get many, many, many deliveries… and LOVE it

Oh the joys of a new season! It’s the time that the emails start flying for roundups, personal style posts, photoshoots… It’s the time when I spend all day in the window looking out for UPS and Fedex. It’s spring!!! Let’s look at what the delivery man dropped off!

Beauty:

beauty instawave instr beauty yardley

I recently received an InstaWave curling iron- which I’ll be using for an upcoming Spring Style photoshoot (shhh! top secret!). It helps you create those long, beachy waves without fuss and stress. I love love love soap, so a shipment of Yardley Artisan Soap (in oat milk & honey and lavender & rosemary scents) was a welcome addition to the bath beauty drawer. Coincidentally, the soap came with the Instrumental Beauty Home Spa Treatment System, which we’ve already reviewed (thumbs up!).

beauty completely bare

I went to the Completey Bare Market around Valentine’s Day and got curious about home hair removal. there’s a product review coming up but I can tell you now: start saving your money and wax at home. It’s not that hard.

Makeup:

makeup kavd mfe

More makeup that I could ever use? Not so much! Spring and Summer demand new looks and I was lucky enough to hook up with Makeup Forever to update my makeup bag. And believe me, we’ll be talking about EVERYTHING over the next two seasons.

I do want to mention some things right now, like the Equalizer Primers for skin probs and radiance- I got the smoothing and hydrating primers and they are wonderful. Also? The super bright new Aquamatic Irridescent Blue waterproof eyeshadow pencil– you need this. The New York Times T Magazine has a video tutorial on how to work bold eyeliner:

Skin Deep: Bold Liners

and recently Anna Camp went to the MTV Awards with a bold eye look created by Melanie Inglessis with Makeup Forever products. her inspiration? “I wanted to create a makeup look that would match Anna’s vibrant and fun dress, while giving a nod to the 60s with a modern twist.”

You also went to get in on the Kat von D perfect matte lipstick, Underage Red, ironically priced at $21(it’s legal!). Just saying it adds a little frisson of controversy to the day!

Fragrance:

fragrance fiori bella poppy wildflower

When you wish for fragrance and it comes dancing to the door… I’m working on a spring fragrance roundup and managed to have these sent over: fiori and bella from Vince Camuto, Poppy Wildflower from Coach and Be Delicious from DKNY. Mmmm, can you smell your fragrance future?

home clean perfume

I won’t even open these Clean Perfume products in Warm Cotton (reed diffuser, room spray, and candle) until my home decorating project is done. But I HAVE opened the perfume rollerball, and it’s lovely. It smells clean, fresh, and sort of comforting.

Clothing:

home southern tide

When I met Southern Tide president Allen Stephenson at a press preview last month, I thought it he was just selling clothes. Then? I found out that old boy was selling EVERYTHING.  Southern Tide is a lifestyle brand, the best one that you may not have heard of. Everything that they sent was made right here in the US- shopped from Greenville, SC.

I admit to getting out of hand- but a woman with a home decorating project has to be ruthless. I just opened the Performance Towel set for my bathroom springcleaning refresh- and out came soft terrycloth towels- and handtowels and washcloths. Behold the Towel Tower!

clothing southerntide

Don’t worry- we’ll be talking about the clothes pretty soon. In fact? You can see how the women’s Summer Cardigan works with animal print in this Lucky Shops Community post. So cute.

In keeping with my American Brand fetish- I snagged some choice pieces from LL Bean Signature (also featured in the latest Lucky post). I felt like the Signature Check Chambray was a real must have. The navy and red striped poplin fit and flare dress? Do I even have to say anything?

Remember this romper from my Pastels Lucky post? It came all rolled up in a box with this faux leather lock tote and crazy coral and gold booties. Fancy is not the word, darling! I could put on all three on a summer day and prance.

Accessories:

Loved when this mint green infinity scarf showed up as my Lucky magazine subscription gift. Look how it matches this Tommy Bahama beach towel? Sigh… The beach is in my future, y’all!

accessories ume drive bracelets

I have told you and told you about the Ume Drive bracelets from the time that I met CEO Clem Harrigan at a fashion event. They were sweet enough to send over two more- and I have to be honest: I was going to do a giveaway, but I would rather keep them Go to www.umedrive.com and get your own. And get a lot, because you’ll be color coding your data to which USB bracelet you’re wearing that day.

My birthday came and so did these most awesome prezzies. This sweet, delicate zodiac sign necklace is from one of my faves, Shop Jacqueline Rose (a fellow Aries) and it is my new everyday necklace. After sending me Christmas stockings and Hot Mess skincare products, Traci Claussen of REpurposing NOLA hauled off and MADE me a bag. Yep- just for me. I LOVE her.

Cat Footwear came through ON my birthday with these hot hot Squander boots, and they instantly became my new combat boot. I’ll be running these all spring and summer.

Ok- we’re all caught up – at least on deliveries. I have felt so guilty about not posting about these!!! There are lots of fun posts in the works, so you will be seeing and learning more about this stuff, so stay tuned.
