That 70s Bag

Sexy 70s disco siren vibes (smell like a winner with Joy Forever by Jean Patou, a brilliant retro scent)

When I was a kid I was surrounded by women who had their stylistic business together. From my grandmother to my mom to my cousins, I had women around me who could teach Vogue a few lessons. I also had an Aunt in New Jersey who wore and sold vintage. Thanks to these style mavens, I can go blindly into a thrift store, hold my hand out, and have an awesome item fly into my hand like Mjolnir. In this instance, it was a sweet leather clutch bag with a bronze, abstract shaped snap on the front flap.

Clutch bags, like this delicious caramel colored one above, actually came into being in the 20s, so you’d probably see a flapper carrying one. All the better to emphasize that jazz age freedom exemplified by dresses that let women flail about doing the Charleston. This is probably what endeared the bag to the Studio 54 era fashionistas in the 70s and 80s. You could hold the bag under your arm while boogieing the night away.

This outfit samples both disco and punk to create a purely modern sex goddess look. The floral Almost Famous dress is ruched down the front with an asymmetrical hem, and reminds me of divas like Diana Ross or Donna Summer. I added a pair of Enzo Angiolini cutout t-strap pumps in caramel and gold for class (the disco era was heavily influenced by the 30s, so these would have been perfect!). Adding the American Rag rhinestone shouldered denim vest takes the look from discotheque to CBGB’s as quickly as a subway ride downtown.

in which we go to the boohoo man aw2015 press preview

Yep, more excitement. I got an invitation to go see the boohoo man aw2015 collection. But of course, since everything around here is a process…bhm1

Lately, I’ve been going to bed at night like a normal person. meaning, it gets dark and I turn the light off and go to sleep. No social media or junkie-like internet surfing, no TV. I go to SLEEP. As a result I get up at literally the crack of dawn, and since i feng shui’d my bed, I can watch it happen.bhm2

Into the bathroom for grooming! I’m trying out some new toothpaste (review coming up) from Hello oral care products thanks to influenster vox, along with this Slim Sonic Destination toothbrush in New York ($14.95 and really cute, comes with batteries). bhm3

These days, I head out to the park for a pre-blogday walk. I’m working my way up to running, honestly. It had rained the day before so I layered up with my french terry Life is good hoodie under a J Crew terry cardigan. These are the Gemini capri tights that I got in my RS Beauty& Balance goodie bag. Those sneakers? Those are the water shoes that I picked up at the Tommy Bahama Island Life event. Not like anyone’s gonna ask if they’re real sneakers or not, and they’re cute. bhm4

I had just gotten a new bracelet from Lisa Hoffman Beauty, and I felt like this was the perfect day to put it on. LHB is just launching their Vibrant Collection. So instead of the usual round beads, the’re faceted, which makes them that mush more light reflecting and luxurious. This is the Tuscan Fig bracelet ($65), with faceted honey-hued agate beads, rose gold plated spacers and a rose gold fragrance pendant. The color of the  bracelet reflects the sweet fig/vanilla bean/coconut wood fragrance that will emanate from the pendant throughout the day.

bhm5

I was feeling frisky because of the warm-ish Spring weather and sunlight, so I went with this basic boho outfit. Thrifted white shirt and ruffled lambswool sweater, handpainted (by me with fabric paint) Dittos Brand Charlie boyfriend distressed jeans, Cat Footwear Squander boot ($140) , and my very own custom made REpurposing NOLA boho-chic handbag (priceless)bhm5a

I totally admit to taking the rest of the morning to bake cookies to give to the pr people and getting there late. But I gave them cookies, so… you know. bhm6

This is what to expect for aw2015 on the boohoo man shoe front- colored combat boots, sleek leather-esque trainers and sweet looking wingtip style sneakers. Nothing fancy, but it betokens a restrained pint of view, sort of minimalist.

These are the perfect shoes to go with this paint splattered neoprene sweatshirt (mine, I want it!) and these 70s style patchwork jeans. I’m really into that little touch of color in the black/white sweatshirt with the drawstring at the waist. Personally, I would prob throw a gold shoe under this outfit, just to be that way.

bhm7

I was also really into this pink sweatshirt with the camo patches. It would look great on a guy, or on a woman, oversized and worn with a pencil skirt and heels. Or get it big and wrap it around your hips like a skirt, tying the arms around you. That’s gender equality! We’re sharing sweatshirts!bhm8

Yes, i did put this men’s coat on and take a selfie. It looks so good on me! It fit perfectly, too. The big zippered pockets can act like a handbag, and I loved the knitted sleeves (hold out that nasty winter cold) that you could put bracelets and bangles over. The knitted collar is perfect for laying chunky knit infinity scarves on top of. And I love how it hangs open just so, revealing my chic Aries necklace from ShopJacquelineRose.

Gender equality! We’re buying a coat as a couple to share (but really, I’m keeping it for me).bhm9

On the way out, I spotted this western-influenced statement jewelry in shades of turquoise and mother-of-pearl and hinted that I’d love a boohoo lookbook for the women’s aw2015 collection. Wait til you see what they have coming!!!

in which we get many, many, many deliveries… and LOVE it

Oh the joys of a new season! It’s the time that the emails start flying for roundups, personal style posts, photoshoots… It’s the time when I spend all day in the window looking out for UPS and Fedex. It’s spring!!! Let’s look at what the delivery man dropped off!

Beauty:

beauty instawave instr beauty yardley

I recently received an InstaWave curling iron- which I’ll be using for an upcoming Spring Style photoshoot (shhh! top secret!). It helps you create those long, beachy waves without fuss and stress. I love love love soap, so a shipment of Yardley Artisan Soap (in oat milk & honey and lavender & rosemary scents) was a welcome addition to the bath beauty drawer. Coincidentally, the soap came with the Instrumental Beauty Home Spa Treatment System, which we’ve already reviewed (thumbs up!).

beauty completely bare

I went to the Completey Bare Market around Valentine’s Day and got curious about home hair removal. there’s a product review coming up but I can tell you now: start saving your money and wax at home. It’s not that hard.

Makeup:

makeup kavd mfe

More makeup that I could ever use? Not so much! Spring and Summer demand new looks and I was lucky enough to hook up with Makeup Forever to update my makeup bag. And believe me, we’ll be talking about EVERYTHING over the next two seasons.

I do want to mention some things right now, like the Equalizer Primers for skin probs and radiance- I got the smoothing and hydrating primers and they are wonderful. Also? The super bright new Aquamatic Irridescent Blue waterproof eyeshadow pencil– you need this. The New York Times T Magazine has a video tutorial on how to work bold eyeliner:

Skin Deep: Bold Liners

and recently Anna Camp went to the MTV Awards with a bold eye look created by Melanie Inglessis with Makeup Forever products. her inspiration? “I wanted to create a makeup look that would match Anna’s vibrant and fun dress, while giving a nod to the 60s with a modern twist.”

You also went to get in on the Kat von D perfect matte lipstick, Underage Red, ironically priced at $21(it’s legal!). Just saying it adds a little frisson of controversy to the day!

Fragrance:

fragrance fiori bella poppy wildflower

When you wish for fragrance and it comes dancing to the door… I’m working on a spring fragrance roundup and managed to have these sent over: fiori and bella from Vince Camuto, Poppy Wildflower from Coach and Be Delicious from DKNY. Mmmm, can you smell your fragrance future?

home clean perfume

I won’t even open these Clean Perfume products in Warm Cotton (reed diffuser, room spray, and candle) until my home decorating project is done. But I HAVE opened the perfume rollerball, and it’s lovely. It smells clean, fresh, and sort of comforting.

Clothing:

home southern tide

When I met Southern Tide president Allen Stephenson at a press preview last month, I thought it he was just selling clothes. Then? I found out that old boy was selling EVERYTHING.  Southern Tide is a lifestyle brand, the best one that you may not have heard of. Everything that they sent was made right here in the US- shopped from Greenville, SC.

I admit to getting out of hand- but a woman with a home decorating project has to be ruthless. I just opened the Performance Towel set for my bathroom springcleaning refresh- and out came soft terrycloth towels- and handtowels and washcloths. Behold the Towel Tower!

clothing southerntide

Don’t worry- we’ll be talking about the clothes pretty soon. In fact? You can see how the women’s Summer Cardigan works with animal print in this Lucky Shops Community post. So cute.

clothing ll bean

In keeping with my American Brand fetish- I snagged some choice pieces from LL Bean Signature (also featured in the latest Lucky post). I felt like the Signature Check Chambray was a real must have. The navy and red striped poplin fit and flare dress? Do I even have to say anything?

clothing amiclubwear accessories amiclubwear

Remember this romper from my Pastels Lucky post? It came all rolled up in a box with this faux leather lock tote and crazy coral and gold booties. Fancy is not the word, darling! I could put on all three on a summer day and prance.

Accessories:

accessories tommy bahama lucky

Loved when this mint green infinity scarf showed up as my Lucky magazine subscription gift. Look how it matches this Tommy Bahama beach towel? Sigh… The beach is in my future, y’all!

accessories ume drive bracelets

I have told you and told you about the Ume Drive bracelets from the time that I met CEO Clem Harrigan at a fashion event. They were sweet enough to send over two more- and I have to be honest: I was going to do a giveaway, but I would rather keep them Go to www.umedrive.com and get your own. And get a lot, because you’ll be color coding your data to which USB bracelet you’re wearing that day.

accessories sjr rpnola cat

My birthday came and so did these most awesome prezzies. This sweet, delicate zodiac sign necklace is from one of my faves, Shop Jacqueline Rose (a fellow Aries) and it is my new everyday necklace. After sending me Christmas stockings and Hot Mess skincare products, Traci Claussen of REpurposing NOLA hauled off and MADE me a bag. Yep- just for me. I LOVE her.

Cat Footwear came through ON my birthday with these hot hot Squander boots, and they instantly became my new combat boot. I’ll be running these all spring and summer.

Ok- we’re all caught up – at least on deliveries. I have felt so guilty about not posting about these!!! There are lots of fun posts in the works, so you will be seeing and learning more about this stuff, so stay tuned.

in which i finally make it to a Beautypress event (Spotlight Day)

I actually missed a free boat ride this summer.

sunset1

Thanks to that time I went to Sniffapalooza, I was invited to the Beautypress Summer Sunset Sail and thanks to bad planning and the fact that I walk really slowly and kind of had nothing to wear really but tried anyway, I ended up getting on the train late and never made it to the pier.sunset2sunset3

All of this happened without me… All. Of. This. And then they sailed past the Statue of Liberty, so me missing the boatride was faintly un-American.  sunset4

So when they asked if I wanted to go to Spotlight Day, I was all in. I woke up early (well, early in the afternoon, I picked the cocktail hour option) and made sure that I was dressed and out of the house in time to make it. I was NOT missing this event.

spotlightday1

I threw on my fave brown velvet blazer over that basic h&m striped tee I bought in August and squeezed myself into my true shape jeans from LL Bean, which look adorable even while accomodating my Chubby Chubs belly. I embellished it with my new perforated leather bow tie with contrasting stitching that I got from Lesley Ware at Nolche Verde, and by gorgeous Ariel charm necklace from ShopJacquelineRose. I was ready, and I was determined to be ON TIME. spotlightday5

Made it! And it was AMAZING. As soon as you come in the door- beauty products. Moisturizers, mascara, eyeliner, press-on nails, false eyelashes, EVERYTHING you need to be a girl.

And then some extra stuff so you can be an uber girl, then go home and peel it all off. The first thing in my bag was the Derma E firming moisturizer, along with an amazing eye pencil from Xtreme Lash (a soft, velvety kohl effect).  Kiss & ImPress Press-On Manicures was offering free mani-makeovers and also eyelash applications. spotlightday2

I met Meredith Smith of Sweet Anthem Perfumes. A former Microsoft employee, she’s turned to the world of fragrance with a collection of scents based on literature. Every fragrance is named for a character in a book or myth. She just got picked up by Anthropologie.com, and hopes to open a brick and mortar shop here in New York one day.

spotlightday3

Lavera is a European company that sells cosmetics through health food stores across the world. Which kind of blew my mind. If you don’t go to health food stores, then you’re missing out- because they are not at Sephora at all. They gave me a sample from their skincare line, True Natural, a hydrating moisturizer featuring spagyric, organic pearl extract, organic shea butter and anti-oxidant vitamin E. They also do an organic self-tanning line, which was featured in Elle magazine.

spotlightday4

Saw my fave makeup lady Lauren Napier who was showing off her amazing CLEANSE wipes. I still remember meeting her at The Makeup Show and tucking her wipes into my goodie bags at my first anniversary celebration. It’s always a pleasure to see Lauren and hear about her progress. CLEANSE is currently sold at Kenig Alcone, right here in NY. On the way to the cocktail bar I ran into Rana Campbell, who I had met briefly at the Katty Xiomara Nolcha Fashion Week Show last month. I recognized her by her Otterbox Symmetry phone case, lol! spotlightday6

Time for refreshments… lovely prosecco cocktails with either raspberry or beet, and delicious sandwiches from Le Pain Quotidien. So good. I got a flute with raspberry first and then went back for the one with the beet slice since it was such an interesting idea- and healthy drinking, right? And the french bread sandwiches were delicious. Just the right bit for the moment. spotlightday7

I dropped by the Bodyography table and spoke to Lori Lieb, who is passionate about her product and has flawless eyeshadow. She showed off her Electric Lip Slides, glorious burts of lip nourishing color that can be used as a lipstick, gloss or stain. Really impressive product. And Bodyography makeup is PETA certified, vegan, and gluten free. spotlightday8When I got home and emptied out my editor bag, I had all of this… so we’re going to be talking about beauty for awhile. Yay!

the reality of MBFW, the sassy perspective of things.

So, as we may have figured out, I am a person who loves fashion but stil remembers that I am a flesh and blood person. maybe because I worked behind the scenes as a student and had some actual experience in how shows and events are put together, I’m not as bowled over as other people. Or maybe I’m now a jaded new Yorker (again). In any case- I loved loved loved knowing that I had a right to go to some shows, but I also had some other concerns.

Like how not to sweat through whatever I was wearing. (Massive, nasty, humid, HEAT WAVE for ss2015 NYFW/MBFW *historical notation)

nyfwrecap1

The first festivity was the Befohr party at the Jimmy Lounge at the James Hotel in Soho- which you guys already read an account of here. The reality is spending the evening wanting to go swimming, then heading home on the subway and window shopping on Nostrand Avenue when the train dumps you out on Flatbush (3 stops from where you need to be). This bag is to die, isn’t it? Love.

nyfwrecap2

This is me out at the table burning the hell up, but determined to gauge customer reaction to the addition of mauby to the table menu. I even offered free tastes. I sold a few, then ran home to glue myself together to go to Lincoln center for the Desigual ss2015 show (we already reviewed that here). SOOOOO happy to get a little glamor in my life, lol! Woo hoo!nyfwrecap3

I managed to get into this striped Daisy Fuentes for Kohl’s dress (which I had wanted since I saw it at the Fall Press Preview). I wore some cool pieces from Shop Jacqueline Rose (the illumination hand chain, the green oasis bracelet, and the black buddha mala for prosperity), and I made sure to carry my ParMana Designs Dream Awake shoulder bag. I love carrying things from people I know and like. It’s like having friends with me.

nyfwrecap4

After the show, there’s a mad rush- some towards the front row celebs, some trying to get backstage and some (like me) trying to go get some free beverages. These are just little moments that struck me on the way out. Nothing amazing, just images that brought things back down to a human persepctive after watching Adriana Lima bounce down the runway.

nyfwrecap5

I was photographing the SK-II installation and wondering if I could grab a bottle and run, when they offered to do something or other to my skin. As soon as I knew that there was a present involved I went for it. It was nice! The lady took my photo with some kind of tablet (it was a cute pic, wish I still had it, actually) and told me nice things about my skin. Then she gave me an SK-II pitera essence mask which I am still hoarding. I liked it, so if I have a sudden attack of aging, I’m set.

nyfwrecap6

nyfwrecap7 nyfwrecap8

Then I just wandered around getting things. I got a card from the Papyrus kiosk (same guy as last year, but I guess the better location went to his head. He didn’t let me pick my card this season. he was nicer when he was way in the back and nobody paid attention to him). I checked out the Pandora spot, grabbed a bunch of reading material, stopped to gawk at the E! television set, and gawped over the pretty lit up dress on the Mercedes Benz stage. And thanks to the nice girl at Tresemme with the shiny hair who gave me the whole product spiel. I heart you!

nyfwrecap9 nyfwrecap91 nyfwrecap92

After that I did a little streetsyle. I was back to skulking, it’s too hard to approach people at the tents and I wasn’t really that interested- I just wanted t make sure I had a few things for the blog. A lady had on a silver foil pleated skirt that was like ice in the sun.

nyfwrecap93 nyfwrecap94

Then I went to the Met Opera Shop and picked up schedules for the new season. So many things I’d like to see! I haven’t been to the opera in a while- but check out my first visit here. I made sure to take a few photos of the fountain, and all the stuff I got. I know a lot of people don’t care about ‘the perks of blogging’, but I’m a results oriented person who needs rewards. Sorry. Also, I give stuff away. But for real- if they didn’t give me anything to keep… lol! my greedy ass would prob stay home. And people who say they don’t care are lying.

The next day I took my Desigual wallet/clutch to McDonald’s for my morning wi-fi and breakfast break.

nyfwrecap95

This is me the next day, back at my table. I’m wearing my fave BDG tshirt (cleavage looks perfs in it) as well as my usual bracelets and my new favorite skirt ever from Life is good. See that face? Fashion withdrawal. This was the last day I sat outside selling anything because MBFW makes everything else look small boring, and ugly by comparison. I don’t hate my business and I’m glad I spent the summer doing it, but now I felt like I needed to do better. Bigger. PRETTIER! Later.nyfwrecap96

I couldn’t wait to go to the Katty Xiomara show at Nolcha Fashion Week (see my review). I found a cute little lingerie shop to keep in mind for later, and after the show got some cool skincare samples from Adrian London. There was some moisturizer for men, but the boo doesn’t do skincare (yet.) so I’ve been using it on my hands and feet.

nyfwrecap97

After the skincare was secured (and an otter box iphone case which we may be discussing soon- shhhh! giveaway! shhhh!) it was time for drinkies. I got a Dasani and Don Q rum cocktail, a glass of sparkling (delicious) rose from Franciacorta, and some sorrel wine from Bellaforma. After that I was straight. Strolled home with my nose in the air, too cute for the rest of the world. Yep. I said that.

nyfwrecap98

I had a few days to rest and then I got an amazing invite from Red Door Spas to go BACKSTAGE (you guys heard all about this already… in 3 parts).  It was insane, and fun, and I got so many photos! It was the best.

nyfwrecap99

I had one last invitation, from a small designer named Indigo Apparel. I got myself together- but MBFW was over so… I did my super casual journalist look: Life is good plush terry sweatshirt. LL Bean true shape jeans, armful of pretties and my black buddha mala necklace. Threw on my Freeport field jacket and slouchy floral backpack for fun- even though it was still a little hot.

nyfwrecap991Ran for the train, made into the city, saw this amazing view from the top of the Empire Hotel– and then went home. It was crazy crowded, no one knew where or when the show was starting, and well- no open bar? Hmm.

I gotta go.

Next up: In which I go to Shake Shack with my little brother (Yes.) Stay tuned!

last of july! (finally): selling baked goods on the street, trying to dress up a little, nail polish, the first thing i bought with my money, red door spa products show up on my doorstep

So, it’s the end of August and officially summer is ending, too. I got a little busy, but I haven’t forgotten that we never covered the least few weeks of July. I basically spent July working up my new baking business Chubby Chubs (cookies, granola bars, blueberry raspberry pound cake, etc), and living my life. I had some invitations- but every time I tried to go somewhere, it backfired.

julyrecap1julyrecap2

The last few weeks of July were all about getting up at the literal crack of dawn (and not 12 or 2pm, which is what I usually think of as early) and baking. There’s something so calming and wonderful about having a set of instructions to follow that leave your house smelling like cake. I love cake… especially mine! I started making granola bars from scratch because customers have been asking for them. Those are my raisin/sunflower seed/coconut bars in the photo.

julyrecap3

I decided that I needed to step up my game a little, and at least try to look decent. Even though I was exhausted, I did my best. My skin was acting up, too, because of the heat. I started my get dressed properly program with my fave sack dress from Uniqlo. It’s a silk/cotton blend and I’ve had it forever. I put it together with the Lisa Hoffman Beauty fragrance bracelets that I was sent (did we talk about that? Yeah! DELIVERY!), and fell in love with. They are so easy to wear, and I love the little whiff of fragrance that I get as my hands move around. the sandals? You already know… weavement by Cat Footwear. I jazzed it up by wearing the Stila stay all day liquid lipstick in Fiery and Zoya nail polish in Carmen red, just to wake myself up.  julyrecap4

This is me at my little table. My business… I LOVE doing this. The corner has a nice breeze and steady foot traffic. It’s not I can read, and back before I broke my sippy cup, I would hang and drink iced tea or coffee that I made fresh. I keep my earnings in this cute Le Sportsac pouch that I got at Caravan Stylist Studio back in June. julyrecap5

I tried to do something pretty everyday, but I admit that it was not easy. The early mornings were wearing me down, and to be honest- it was hot and I was lazy. Luckily I have a few things that you can throw on and look ok, and I had my zosia sandals from Cat Footwear, and I polished my toes with Obsess from Illamasqua. I mean, toenails say a lot about a woman.

This is me trying to keep it together:

julywardrobe

there’s a little Joe Fresh (the grey dress that I knot at the waist, channeling a grecian toga type thing), some Bobi Los Angeles (the aqua maxi, and the peach cowl neck tank), that Modcloth tshirt I got for Christmas 3 years ago, and discount store summer dresses (I cut the green one in half to make a skirt). I did the best I could. Style? Awake and dressed.

julyrecap7

I got some more stuff, in addition to the bracelets that made me so giddy. I got my first box of Red Door Spa Professional products, in the form of their Signature Luxurious Body wash, Milk & Honey Sugar Scrub, and Milk & Honey Nourishing Body Cream. You can only get their products at the spa locations? But they just opened one in Union Square, here in NY.

Then I got a box from GLO Science with maintenance supplies. I got the Glo Solo teeth whitening vials, the GLO whitening antioxident superberry toothpaste, and this Everyday Glo teeth whitening maintenance pen. Nice! So that’s what you need after you use the teeth whitening device- you have to maintain the whitening effect or you did all of that for nothing.

julyrecap92 julyrecap93

I had to go downtown one day, so in order to go further than the corner I used my new Red Door Spas Professional products to get clean (and soft- that Milk & Honey Sugar Scrub is crazy amazing. Instant silky skin), and my Dry Idea Stain Clear deoderant which I’ve been using all summer and pretty happy with the results (I don’t stink and I don’t have white stains all over my clothing). As usual, I keep the makeup simple- Aquamatic waterproof glide on eye shadow pencil in S60 from Makeup Forever, Bobbi Brown pot rouge, Jurlique Love balm, and a Lauren Napier Cleanse towelette in my purse for just in case.

I wore my Nikki Poulos dress– a simple stretchy dress with a simple graphic print, and my new best friend the Lisa Hoffman Beauty fragrance bracelet in red jade and neroli scent. No stress. I toted my ParMana Designs Dream Awake bag for hit of color, and a smile.

I just walked downtown to enjoy the weather and took pics that whole way there. These are some of my favorite: julyrecap94 julyrecap95 julyrecap96

I had a few appointments and errands, and ended up eating a bowl of homemade style chicken and dumpling soup at Golden Krust. I could not have done any better myself. I had a patty crust with it, and my lunch only cost me $5- and it was filling and tasted like real food, not preservatives and fake flavoring. On my way home I stopped off in Rainbow and poked around. I love these crazy earrings! So dramatic. This body conscious dress, with the right jacket and shoes, could pass muster, too. It’s cute, and you would could feel good wearing and looking feminine without stressing yourself out. julyrecap97

I ended up stressing myself out later by agreeing to go into Manhattan to meet with Sara Taringhi-Murphy of ParMana Designs. She wanted to meet up, and also use my bag in a photo shoot. Since she came through for me when I needed it, I wasn’t going to say no… UNFORTUNATELY this was that month when my phone drowned, so I was trying to do everything via email and ended up messing up. It’s too bad, because I managed to get myself together pretty nicely. I had a cotton pique Harve Bernard blouse with the most adorable short sleeves, my fiery orange Ann Taylor skirt with the kickpleat and front pickets, and my new Lisa Hoffman fragrance bracelet in green jade and clary sage scented pendant.

julyrecap98  I was also wearing my ParMana Designs handbag, and I tucked my best friend the leopardskin cardi inside for safekeeping. I took the train into the city, and got off at historic Columbus Circle (Lincoln Center! The Opera! NYFW!) to run over to the Hudson Hotel to meet Sarah. I was a little late, so I waited in the lobby. I kept waiting, just walking around the lobby and looking at everything, then I left. Turned out Sarah was on the roof shooting and because my phone was broken, I hadn’t gotten her messages, and the front desk had no idea where she was. So I wasted carfare and went all the way to the city and got nothing done.

The Hudson Hotel is really cool, though- so I’m kinda glad that I went.

july5 (2) july6 (2) july9 (2)

The next day I went back to my table…

julyrecap99

I stand in between the lady who sells mangoes and the guy who sells jewelry. Some days people walk right by me since I’m brand new at this, and they don’t want to take a chance. I have some good days and some lame ones. But that’s how you build a business- go out and swing for the bleachers every day. Sometimes you’ll hit a home run. Slowly but surely, by the end of July I had a few repeat customers and I was determined to make this work for me.

Independence! One slice of cake at a time…

See you guys soon! can’t wait to finally get into August…

in which i got to the influenster/DKNY #MYNY perfume launch and photograph rita ora, shoot some streetstyle, and get a pretzel from dominique ansel

I’ve been working with the website influenster.com to review products since last year. This adventure started like so many others- I opened my email box and ‘pop’! I had an invitation to an event in NYC’s Madison Square Park.  Seems that DKNY was throwing a launch party to celebrate the introduction of their new perfume, MY NY. Not only were they going to be giving away free samples of the new perfume? But stars Rita Ora and Chrissy Teigen woere going to be on hand, and (much to my foodie delight) pastry star Dominique Ansel (he actually invented the cronut) was going to be at the launch giving every one a free heart-shaped pretzel. Did they have to ask me twice?

C’mon. This is me we’re talking about!

MYNYevent1

I packed my new Life is good slouchy floral knapsack (more about this later when I finally finish recapping July and start talking about August properly) with all the neccessities: New York magazine fashion issue, Desigual laptop bag from NYFW with Asus netbook, and my new friend- Stuffy Hello Kitty McStuffins (more about him later- let’s not get ahead of ourselves, ok?). I decided on a look that I call ‘camp chic’. Green bucket hat, bought on Fulton street for $8, Life is good LOVE creamy shirttail henley over a $1 discount store tank, and the cute bag that I already mentioned.

I wore my Catfootwear Zosia sandals and painted my protruding toenails with Illamasqua Obsess nail varnish and Zoya Yana nail polish, using the second toe as my contrasting accent. My eyes are lined with butter LONDON WINK eye pencil in Union Jack Black, a creamy liner that even I can’t keep from looking amazing. My eyes really popped behind those Grafton frames from the glasses.com’s Kensington Road collection.

I was ready for a day that was sure to include wandering around in the sun trying to dodge photographers in order to get photos. I had no idea that my day would be, well, fun.

MYNYevent3When I got there I immediately saw the Rita Ora festooned DKNY bus stop and headed straight over. Everywhere you looked there was someone handing out the red, heart shaped perfume samples or water with the #MYNY hashtag. I walked around shooting pics with my phone, just setting the mood to show off here on the blog, and then Rita Ora showed up.

MYNYevent4 I casually drifted as close as I could and just held my phone still and shot whenever I saw an opening. One thing I learned early in photography school- just wait for your moment. People were flipping out, taking a million shots, trying to angle their camera phones, and missing out. I stood, aimed the phone, and just kept my eye on the screen and my finger on the shutter button. Every time I saw a break in the scrum around her I took a photo.

I didn’t get close ups, but you can see her cute Betsey Johnson-esque razor cut bob (wig?) and the trademark red lips. Her silver DKNY dress is one that I would definitely wear, just layering with it for fall/winter. I actually mention that in my Full Metal Jacket post, which is exclusively on Lucky Community. She wore it with silver platform sneakers. I would have liked to see a little accessorizing, but maybe they didn’t want to detract from the perfume.

MYNYevent5One thing that I did differently was to actually approach people for streetstyle, instead of being anti-social and sneaky. For the first time I felt comfortable just walking up to people and asking their permission. I guess using the phone instead of a real camera takes the pressure off? Anyway, I saw really cool people, like blogger Sameda Coulson (in the tied front shirt and heart-shaped sunnies). Everyone had something special going on, from the cool schoolgirl of this floral shift from Zara with Chanel referencing phone case, to the crisply grown up lady with the gorgeous white dress adorned with geometric lines. Style!

MYNYevent6I was actually getting ready to leave when I ran into Tami Periera of the blog  Ciao Bella 29. I was so not into standing on that line to get a pretzel! But instead, Tami pulled me into her little orbit and we ended up talking and bang! we were next to meet Dominique! I was so nervous, but I managed to get this portrait with my phone. Isn’t he adorable? And he even made a dipping sauce to go with the pretzel! That’s a real chef. AND he was out there all day handing out pretzels. He is my baking hero forever.

After getting my Dominique Ansel MYNY pretzel, I ended up getting my photo taken by the DKNY staff photographer. hazel, one of the lovely people interacting with the crowd that day (and she’s from Lincoln, Nebraska- so cool!)  was in the bus stop helping people like me download their free MYNY heart souvenir photos.
