The Hair Clips

It took me a second but I finally got around to noticing the hair clip craze. Well… I saw some things happening but I couldn’t make up my mind if it was a for real moment or just some people being silly. It’s fashion. It could have been anything. If I didn’t start it myself, then I have a to take a long hard look at who did. I’m a horrible person.

Anyway.

Once I noticed some strength in the hair clip movement (for me it’s when you see totally different types of people jumping on the wagon and making it theirs) I decided to curate my own collection of must haves. Let’s get all up in it now.

1.Word clips:

I thought this was going to sink at first, but then I saw more examples and I started liking the free, playful fun of it all. Sparkly rhinestones spelling out…whatever. It’s a mood! In a stick straight chignon or curly, coily afro it’s a MOOD.

2. Stars:

I love stars. Star clips take that beauty from the heavens and has it streaking across your head. This silver cascade is attached to a springy french clip, perfect for half ponytails. The hammered brass and enamel star is a perfect accent piece. Use green eyeshadow, contacts or liner to bring the color of the stars to your eyes.

3. Feathers:

These gently curling, super realistic feather barettes are the minimalist style accent that will have people sneaking glances at you. Brush hair tightly back on one side and clip, leave the rest free. Irresistible in any hair type.

4. Giant barettes:

These are giant, sophisticated and glittery versions of the clips you had as a kid. It brings a 90s trend, barrettes for big girls, into sharp 21st century focus by blowing them up and blinging them out. Don’t stress the placement, just stick a few in your hair before you leave. No stress, big style.

5. Hair chains:

Hair jewelry pops up every so often and everyone acts as if it were new, but chains for hair have been around for a minute or two. In Europe the Renaissance featured romantic ringlets pulled back and adorned with gold and jewels. They also feature in Indian wedding jewelry. With Africans, the chains may be braided into the hair, with jewels dangling down on the forehead. This simple piece takes all of that and rolls it into one modern piece that can be draped over the head with golden beads focused on the front, loops of chain framing the head. True poetry. I got this one at the crazy closing sale of the Topshop in Soho.

6. Flower crowns:

I have no intention of giving up on flower crowns.

What are your favorite accessory trends? Do you feel naked without a little sparkle? what’s your fave hairstyle to add some flair to? Talk amongst yourselves.

The New Wig

So while I was gone I bought a new wig. It looks nothing like the old wig, and it does tricks.

The basic straight wig, 1B.

The lob wig that I wrote about makes my head hurt after a few hours, and the thick straight hair makes my neck sweat. So of course I go get another wig, which has more hair since it’s longer. Because I felt like I needed it. To expand my hair range.

I don’t know who I am anymore.

This one looks like what my real hair looks like after being heat straightened. The texture, not the length. It didn’t have bangs or anything, and it has a 3 inch lace front so I can just part it all over the front. And it had the baby hairs already done for wig challenged people like myself. When I got home I started playing with it, then became completely dissatisfied and was mad because I now wanted curls.

I found a youtube video on how to curl your wig and then… I had to figure out how to style a big head of crazy curls every day.

Basically, you can twist the synthetic wig hair or put it in curlers/rods and then dunk the whole thing in boiling water. BE CAREFUL. I handled it with salad tongs. I dipped the hair in the pot, then quickly transferred it to a towel on the kitchen counter, then folded the towel over it. I left that to sit, and then I carefully carried the wig in the towel to the bathroom and put it on a pant hanger to hang from the shower head. I took the rollers out and let it dry then finger combed the curls out. Magic. I have a detangling spray to make it easier to comb out, plus a spray that adds shine so it won’t look dull and dry.

When I got sick of the curls, I dunked the wig again and they simmered down to beachy waves. So this will be a fun game until I get bored again or melt the wig by accident.

See you next time!

NYFW: in which we go backstage with Aveda for the Chiara Boni/ La Petite Robe beauty blowout, featuring Dharma Stuart/Major Models

cb1Chiara Boni, whose La Petite Robe label a cult brand since the 80s, showed her latest collection at ArtBeam last week and Aveda was on hand to handle both hair and makeup.  cb2The inspiration for the look was a blossoming flower, with bold lips and undulating wet look hair.  cb3The pace backstage was frenetic as stylists wielded product and hairdryers at a frantic pace. The hair took liberal amounts of Aveda’s Flax Seed Aloe Strong Hold Sculpturing Gel, which enhanced the wet look and made hair super shiny. cb4

cb5Here the models take a break from styling prep as they line up to do a show run-through on the catwalk. cb5aAveda Guest Artist John Reyman adjusting a model’s look. His inspiration was blooming roses, which ties in with the floral colors and prints in the show. His instructions and product recommendations are at the end of this post. cb6

cb7 In the midst of the chaos, models were giving interviews. It was a total madhouse back there! But the makeup looks amazing. The pink lip is so wearable. cb7a

La Petite Robe’s love of color and sense of shape has landed them on multiple covers, like the one of the cast of Orange Is The new Black on the cover of Essence magazine. The ss2016 collection didn’t disappoint, with sumptuous pieces in hot pinks and fuchsias along with softer florals and deeper violet hues.
