The Trip

On the way to Newark airport in a Lyft because the airport shuttle never came.

I started planning my trip back in July. I booked the airline, hotel and tours then went about my business, praying every day that there wouldn’t be another lockdown. Luckily there was just a travel restriction, but I got vaccinated earlier this year and I have consistently tested negative. I was still nervous that the whole thing would fall through. Once it got down to the last 7 days before the trip, I could get excited. I had a whole plan and now it was coming true.

I decided to pack a capsule wardrobe in black, with a white maxidress to go to the country in. I took my new plaid shacket for cold airports and to use as a blanket. My wardrobe consisted of:

  1. Uniqlo tshirt dress, $20, to travel in. Doubled as nightgown.
  2. Laundry by Shelli Segal tshirt minidress with pockets, on sale for $11.
  3. Banana Republic shirtdress with pockets, $55.
  4. Know One Cares white tiered maxidress, $34
  5. Eleven Paris sheer cotton tshirt, fashion internship perk
  6. Primark leggings, $3
  7. Thrifted black footless tights, $1
  8. RFID money belt, $16.95

I ended up adding the 10 euro floral maxidress on the way to the hotel, so I wore the white dress on an evening excursion.

This was how I did luggage. To travel I packed a Rebecca Minkoff tote bag ($40, sample sale) with a folded L.L. Bean camo duffel bag that I got free from another blogger at an event 6 years ago. The tiny wardrobe was packed in a ziplock bag, and I painted a little Street Level handbag (I think it was $20, I got it from C21) to use for my camera and plug adaptors, hand sanitizer, etc. I don’t like having to check anything. I was only staying four days, and I knew I was going to shop so had an empty bag ready.

Unfortunately the Minkoff bag gave up on the way to the hotel. The strap couldn’t handle the pressure. I swapped it out for a cheap tan faux leather bag that I bought in the metro with the dress. Tbh, I bought five dresses and this bag for 50 euro!

I will admit to a lot of toiletries, though. But I have a two Le Sac pouches from a blogger event at Caravan Style Studio ages ago. I took Herbivore Botanicals bakuchiol and Phoenix face oil. I bought Mario Badescu skincare and deodorant from Nordstrom Rack (I love NR), two amazing Bastide fragrances, and the new MAC items from my makeover. I got all the way there and realized that I’d forgotten toothbrush and toothpaste, do I got this awesome Botot brand at a Parisian pharmacy. I also got some Weleda body wash, which was confiscated on the way home.

I was reckless for buying it, and I only got to use it twice🤷🏿‍♀️

The finishing touch was getting faux locs. I love my hair, but I wanted a completely new, no stress, look. I bought a bonnet to protect them at night, and I admit to using Mario Badescu rosewater facial spray and a few drops of face oil to moisturize my scalp. I got new black and gold framed glasses from Zeelol, with fun costume jewelry from my favorite place (Nordstrom Rack), plus my fave Timex watch.

Oh, and these sweet Converse CX low tops, $70, with clear rubber toe detail and orange rubber soles. It turns out that Converse all stars are pretty popular in Paris. I saw so many different iterations! And they were comfortable for all the stair climbing and walking that I did for my whole trip. I didn’t stop moving from the moment I left my apartment in New York. It was a whole marathon.

Next time, we’ll take a trip to the Louvres.

The Friends

I’m not going to say how, but I managed to get into the sold-out Friends NYC Pop-up and it’s pretty much everything you’d expect. Check it out. Could it BE anymore perfect?

Way back in the day, before we all just inhaled shows like air and had to watch commercials, there was this weekly sitcom(situation comedy, fyi) called FRIENDS. It was about some people who were friends. The show became a global phenomenon, with the six stars becoming the white hot focus of all the attention that we now lavish on instagram models. They were the Insecure of the 90s/00s.

If you ever thought about how cool it would be cavort on a couch in front of a fountain, the time has come. Awesome replica of the California set created to replicate a New York area that doesn’t exist.

How cute is this?

Character memorabilia is everywhere…of course, right? Including surprises like Rachel’s wigs. This pinstraight, highlighted and blonded bob wig is life. I want one. I’m also in LOVE with this outfit. No one cuts skirts this way anymore. I also feel like shortsleeved turtlenecks are a forgotten treasure.

I don’t want to give away every little thing, but i loved the way this experience brings the show into three dimensional life all around you. Part of the reason that the show was so popular is that people can easily imagine themselves as part of Central Perk gang. Eminently relatable, even at it’s most chaotic and silly moments, the show has become an ever present background noise that’s both comforting and endlessly amusing.

The show is sold out and I got to see it through sheer universal accident? But if you’re in NYC you can try their standby line at 76 Mercer. There’s also a retail shop at 503 Broadway with a timed ticket and standby line. Check them out here for more info.

BTW, since because this blog is about me, here’s an ootd. It was a cool rainy evening and the first time that I had to layer up. I handpainted the back of this Forever 21 camo shirtjacket (which I bought on depop from yakiecast), and wore it over a thrifted Gap pinstriped button down and Hanes v-neck tshirt.

The soft, premium denim skinnies are Buffalo David Britton and found at Century 21. . Old Navy was selling umbrellas 2 for $10 and I got this sweet animal print one. I kind of liked this outfit, even though I had a time putting all my stuff in a purse the size of an eyeglass case (Erin Dana prince minaudiere, $180 for regular people, given away for free at my (former) fashion job). The whole outfir reminded me of the time Joey put on all of Chandler’s stuff.

Good times.

Are you a Friends fan? Who’s your favorite character? What is your stance on camo for fall? Are tiny purses really ‘it’? Discuss.

See you next time!

The 90s Bag

This is the first item that I upcycled for SEB Market BK. I found this old, beat up bag with a fake plastic Prada tag and fell in love. I thought it was the perfect piece to sell on my new online stores.

The bag is very distinctive. It’s like a flat envelope or something and when you open it up, you realize that there are five separate pockets. For some reason it has velcro instead of snaps to keep it closed. Then a long, thin, sinewy black plastic strap, like a shopping bag. For a plain white knockoff bag it’s kind of dramatic.

It didn’t sell right away and I kept looking at it, trying to figure out what it needed. I realized that the plain white surface had a roiling night sky in it’s soul, with veins of gold running through. The little hand-painted grosgrain ribbon bow features a bronze spike, like a punk chocolate kiss. It took a little sanding to get the paint to stick, and then the whole thing had to be sprayed with a fixative to protect the surface.

Off the shoulder, ruffles and metallics for a sweetly flirtatious summer fit.

This is the perfect summer date night, walking down the shore, hanging out with the girls outfit. The architectural ruffle detail on the skirt goes so well with the floaty off the shoulder top. Adding a carved black bangle (pushed up the forearm, not sitting at the wrist) and bronze laser cut espadrilles are all the accessorizing you need.Maybe a little gold necklace… The 90s bag adds some creative edge and flair, especially with the hit of red from the little bow. It toughens up the look, but in a fun way.

Casual (artsy) fridays.

I liked it with a streamlined casual work look that can be a night out look if you add heels. The bag is your crazy. For night swap the checked uniqlo shirt and for a tube top, and unzip the ankles of the skinny jeans and let them hangover the spiked heels. New outfit, who dis?

See you next time!

The Floral Raincoat

232584016 - Edited

So, hi! Hello! Bonjour! Wie gehts dir! Konnichiwa!

I meant to get back here sooner, but …life. And Polyvore, the app that I was using to post fashion content morphed into an e-commerce platform and I deleted all of my posts and was too busy trying to earn money like a real grown-up to write my blog posts again.

But I thought about it! A lot. I started blogging backwards (like everything else I do in life) so I actually started on Lucky Community and Examiner.com, both deceased sites now, before starting my wordpress blog. When those sites bombed out, I had the blog but I had lost interest in selfies and talking about myself. I felt kind of disassociated from regular life because I had made an existence out of being fake famous and getting free stuff that I didn’t deserve. A lot of free stuff. An embarrassing amount of free stuff. Enough to feel rotten because there are people who have no money, no home and can’t buy anything… like I used to be.I was homeless when I stared blogging, so that free stuff came in handy, but eventually I just felt weird about the whole thing.

Also a feeling like, what kind of weirdos randomly send out free stuff to strangers with no real qualifications? I literally got a random email to go to a party and get a free watch. Then they didn’t like me so I got the free watch but I never heard from them again. So that was another reason not to go places; they liked whatever I was posting but they didn’t like me. I started feeling like I wasn’t worth anything, so I just used polyvore, built up my online business and worked towards living a regular, buy what you want with money, life. Which helped a LOT. I love my life now. So of course I gave myself a photoshoot for my birthday.

I decided that for once I wanted my own photoshoot instead of shooting other people or products. I’m still not the prettiest, tallest or richest; but I like myself more. I go to the gym, eat healthy food and pay my bills mostly on time. I get my taxes done. And I pay actual money for things instead of getting them from pr firms. Which brings us to this glorious grey floral Guess raincoat. I picked it because I hate windbreakers and regular tan trenches bore me. I wanted a spring coat that satisfied my love for pretty girly things while keeping me from getting soaked in the rain. I wore it with a plain linen shirt/dress with eyelet lace detail and a funky floral Sondra Robertson  clutch with a wooden handle. Those glasses are from The Children’s Place and I found them at Goodwill.

It’s good to be home…

See you soon, Faith/SEB Market BK
