The Mail

Going on 30 days of self quarantine and social distancing and the deliveries I get in the mail are a lifeline to a world where a stroll through the aisles of Target or The Container Store was something to take for granted. I know that I could get on the train and go right now, but…why take chances. Right? So for the past four weeks I’ve been shopping to fill in the holes and entertain myself. And support the economy and small business, too.

Here are some of my favorite purchases…

Beauty:

Discovered black woman owned Fro.ology for all of my organic, natural haircare needs. I already have the hair tea, onion and garlic scalp oil and super thick deep conditioner, $10. I’m going to own the whole collection by the time this is over. Saw Goldenbrownskin on instagram and bought their super moisturizing Levres lip gloss in Rose 92 for $6) and then snatched up their Coconut and Rose sugar scrub, $27.95.

I was up late one night and ordered two things: a jar of this delicious smelling coppertone glow body highlighter, $25 from Agrestal Beauty and a wig from Hairbird. The highlighter was exactly what I ordered and the wig… It dosn’t look like what I ordered. I’m not gonna lie, I would not have ordered this style. But it was cheap and I had fun wearing it on my birthday. If you like living dangerously you can try ordering from them.

Herbs and Jewelry:

Staying inside seems ideal at first and then becomes a low key freakout that can blossom into a breakdown if you’re not careful. So herbal teas and cbd can be lifesavers. I ordered four sample packets from August Uncommon, and a raspberry leaf and chasteberry tisane from Herb n Sol that promotes women’s health. I made my second order from Ruby’s Happy Farm for hemp pre-rolls. I’m still stressed, but knowing that I can smoke or sip a hot cup of delicious tea makes me feel like I have control.

I’ve been on a jewelry buying thing since last holiday season (I was working in an upscale museum gift shop) and being in isolation wasn’t slowing me down. This Amour necklace from Metier Essentials, $62, was my birthday present and I loved the minimalist simplicity of the carnelian and clear quartz bracelet from Herb n Sol, $20.

Indulgence:

These delectable chocolate macaroons floated up on my insta tl and I was instantly purchasing. Michelle’s Maccs combines velvety dark, milk or light chocolate with a perfect coconut filling that has a crisp snap and crunch in every bite. You can order individual flavors, or build a cusomized dozen, $28. I devoured the entire dozen within hours, even though I promised myself that I’d try to make them last. The dark chocolate covered salted caramel maccs, $10 for four, are INSANE with red wine. This is the only chocolate snack I crave right now.

It took 20 days, but eventually I gave in to my finer instincts and ordered wine from local liquorteria D.Vino. This is my first box of wine, which I found out actually contains four bottles. I am not sure why I never invested in one of these. The funny thing about this place is that they are very close to a train station and bus stop that I was using to get to and from work. They are across the street from a supermarket and up the block from a McDonald’s (big macs are AMAZING with pinot noir, I swear to you) so every so often I would buy a bottle of wine from them before hopping on the bus home.

I found out about Jeni’s ice cream from a product roundup in Bon Apetit magazine, but it took a quarantine to remind me to try them. It was the middle of the night, I wanted ice cream and their website is a clean, well lit place for treats. You have to buy at least four pints for a delivery, which I thought was going to last for awhile. I gave away one pint, but that was before I tasted anything and I will never do that again.

I just ordered more and it is all for me. I can’t wait to see that big orange box. It’s pricey at $12 a pint, but my sanity and comfort is worth it. The salty caramel will make you cry a little. The brown butter almond brittle is worth doing extra workouts for. If you’re scared to gain weight then just go to the website and look at the pictures.

Hope you’re holding up! What’s getting you through quarantine? Do you have a standing order from a local restaurant or are you hunkered down with a cabinet stuffed with cookies or hot chocolate? Support small and local business! Don’t forget the cardio!

See you next time,

The Birthday Party

Well…

me and me, memories… I love that little girl so much now! she was so brave. now I’m a hot mess.

Not so much a party as a solitary day doing nothing but caring for myself. On my birthday. With no outside demands to be met or people to bother me. This should be a regular occurrence in my life, but in reality I sporadically remember that I have to do a mask or something, when I should be scheduling this time as a permanent standing appointment in self care. I’d be a better person if I did.

Woke up swaddled in the silky sheets that I bought from Bed, Bath and Beyond (clearance), had a shot of fresh squeezed grapefruit juice flavored with ginger and honey, then went out to do my 5 laps. I got to wear my new mask from Lee Rickie, $15. I saw these on Fashion Bomb Daily maybe two weeks ago? Had to wait for them to make more and then it came the day before my birthday. I’m guessing that masks are going to be pretty common after this quarantine, might as well get a designer one and help a small business stay afloat.

As soon as I got back from my 1 mile run (baby steps…I hate jogging), I ran a bath and started my day of beautaaaayyyy. I love sheet masks and beauty treatments in pouches. You can snatch them up in handfuls and open one up any time you need a little pampering. The theme for today was Holler and Glow, one of the reasons I miss browsing the aisles at Target. I can’t say enough about these incredibly softening purrrfect hand (and foot) masks, $3.99.

I didn’t have anywhere to be and the water was nice and hot, so I just hung out reading a huge book about Cecil Beaton and doing nothing. The Zoya nail polish in Edyta, $10, was a blogger perk. I just love this color against my skin. And I finally got my cuticles under control, which is a massive improvement.

So once I got out of the tub, I messed with all the makeup that I’ve had sitting in the bathroom since I went on multiple Sephora binges last summer. From foundation to false eyelashes, with a hit of grey contact lenses. I actually used up all my lipsticks and have been wearing lip balm lately, so I had to improvise a lip color. I used a Sephora lip pencil, $6, added a layer of Levres rose petal lip gloss from Goldenbrownskin, $5 or 2 for $6, and then finished with a light sweep of Pat McGrath LUST gloss in Bronze Temptation, $28. Topped the whole thing off with a new curly afro wig and tiara.

After all that I was too exhausted to try and dress up. Stuck with my comfy sundress and a comfy hooded Cyrus sweater that I bought at Nordstrom this winter. That sweater cost me like $50 and I’ve worn it a thousand times since I got it in December. Fashion math, it’s basically free.

the birthday dinner

Now that I was all made up, it was time for the big birthday meal, all found in the freezer. I had a frozen mushroom and asparagus risotto kit, seasoned tilapia filet, and fresh spinach that I froze a few weeks ago. I broiled the tilapia with butter on low until it was cooked through and crispy, then squeezed a lemon wedge over it. Ate it with a big glass of lemon water . Once I had eaten the last bit it was time for my present.

Yes. I waited until after dinner. It was the big excitement of the day so I wanted to savor it.

I’m just starting to rebuild my thing with my family, and I don’t have close friends or a boyfriend, so I wasn’t expecting any presents from anyone. I bought myself something pretty, wrapped it with homemade wrapping paper and ribbon and let it sit for a week until the amazing day finally arrived. I had seen ads for Metier Essentials on Instagram, and the Amour necklace, $62, really spoke to me.

I used to be very talkative and fun, but now I’m guarded and I really don’t express much emotion. I guess I’m trying to remind myself to be a little softer and more open. If you’re wondering about the wrapping, it’s just brown paper and I stamped it all over with a rubber heart stamp then put a few glitter heart stickers on it.

Even though I gave it to myself, love is love. I don’t have a clue what the future holds or if I’ll even have a life that’s loud with friendships and family. But I have a heart now. So there’s hope.

Did you celebrate a birthday this week? How did it feel? Were you sad or just happy to be alive and have a place to stay quarantined? Were you scared to try and imagine the future?

Until next time,

The Red Bodysuit

This red bodysuit is the business.

SO! I was at a sale at this upscale store and I found this most gorgeous red bodysuit. The fabric feels and looks like crepe jersey, it’s beautifully sewn, and has a cutout that extends across the back to the sides. The color, a full tomato saucian red, is sizzling. It just doesn’t have any label, so I can’t tell the brand or designer.

Whomp whomp.

Which didn’t stop me from snapping it up. No label doesn’t mean low quality. Look how elegant it looks with this swanky Banana Republic circle skirt and Steve Madden glitter boots. For going to the store or casually doing laundry while a photographer snaps every move. Just a normal outfit…

Or you could do this kind of 80s’ish look with some split sided track shorts (and tube socks and shower slides for the win). The shorts are not for sale- I’m really loving them? They’re from C&C California, but I found them at Century 21.

Red crepe jersey cutout bodysuit, size XS

Measures 26 inches from shoulder to crotch. 13 inches from armpit to armpit, unstretched. Waist covers about 8 inches in front. Hips are 12 across, unstretched. Sleeves are 21 inches long. Cutout is 8 x 14. *Shipping is included in the price. **I only sell/ship in the United States.

$52.00

Banana Republic Circle Skirt, size 6

Looks like duchesse satin, made of nylon/spandex/elastane with a polyester lining. Slash pockets at each hip. Wear with a T-shirt and cardigan, sheer blouse, bodysuit, bandeau top, corset or tank top. As versatile as a pair of jeans. Great condition. Measures 25 inches from waist to hem. Waist is 14 inches across, no stretch. 24 inches across the hips. Skirt flares out to 40 inches at the hem. *Shipping is included in the price. **I only sell/ship in the United States.

$45.00

Steve Madden Harpir Booties, size 7.5

Rock star studded, glittery Steve Madden Harpir Booties in pewter. Sleek, pointed toe and 3 inch stiletto heel. From skirts to jeans, super wearable and versatile. Brand new, never worn. *Shipping is included in the price. **I only sell/ship in the United States.

$110.00

Art Deco style acrylic bracelet, OS

Handmade black and silver stretch cuff is lightweight plastic and resin with sparkling oversized rhinestones. Has that punk with a side of debutante thing going on. Fits comfortably on a 7 inch wrist. *Shipping is included in the price. **I only sell/ship in the United States.

$35.00

NYFW: in which we go see Daniel Silverstain’s ss2016 show and attend NOLCHA Fashion Lounge

Daniel Silverstain:silverstain ootdIt was hot and humid. I wore this because I wanted to. I added the $10 straw fedora later, but it still counts. That’s my birthday bag from REpurposing NOLA. I was still sweaty? But that shirt is so old it doesn’t matter. It’s so old it predates my blog. silverstain1   The back view. silverstain2My favorite look, because of the simplicity of the cut. the fabric is all the drama here. I also liked the yellow/white manicure with silver strip, because I could do that and probably will. silverstain3I LOVED the use of color. It felt very fun. The print was sort of Abstract Expressionist, sort of African. Silverstain kept it simple in a way. If you take that redbanded pleated skirt and wear it with a white tshirt and ballet slippers or converse, you will be beautifully dressed without having done anything other than slip on a skirt.

I loved the little ruffle on the bottom of the printed shift dress in photo 1. I’d wear the leggings with a hot strappy black chemise and killer stilletos (live the ones in the show, that weird too long strap, like a dog’s tongue). So disco era.silverstain4Metallics. Let’s talk. Last summer there were these knife pleated skirts everywhere that looked to be made out of gold leaf or tinfoil. If you bought one, just put that away and trot it out for ss2016, cuz it’s still relevant. Silverstain did a great, crazy spaceman leather jacket, but I wasn’t s fond of those culottes. However, that’s not to say they’re not workable or fabulous. I’m just saying I don’t feel them. silverstain iced psl

Afterwards I had to purge the fashion by having a PSL on ice at Sarbucks. So good. Although they have a new thing now. This was my first PSL ever, though.

Nolcha Fashion Lounge:nolcha 4

It was sort of a gloomy day and I had just seen the sargent exhibit and felt like this was the only thing that I wanted to wear in the world. Those white LL Bean Signature twill pants are perfect. Just so comfortable. the gold wingtips with mes insert are from Ami Clubwear, and they just add that right amount of sass. The take the dandy idea and slap it silly. nolcha 1  This jewelry by Raje was showstopping. I really liked the leather dickey, although I think the metal corners are too heavy and sharp. I loved the way that they draped these bib necklaces. Sexy! nolcha 2Interesting patterning from Charles & Ron on these dresses. I love the strong and unflinching use of the yellow/gold. Like, POW! Summer dress in your face! The short one appeals to me. It’s like a dashiki or something. Too cute and perfect for the beach. I liked their bags and leather belts. Nicely done, very rich looking. nolcha 3The home furnishings at Bo Concept where the Nolcha Fashion Lounge was located made me hungry to shop. So many cute little tchotchkes! A skateboarding gold bulldog? Wonderful.nolcha 5

I had another place to go and as I walked down 18th I found a MUJI! I LOVE MUJI! I went in and poked around, and bought a few highlighters and a pumice stone for fun. They had a ton, but it takes me forever to make choices so. I always have to think about it forever.

Accessories, Fashion, jewelry, new york, relaxation, skincare

in which we go over to the Glossier showroom in my new Le Grand hat and do nothing (there was a facial involved)

invite

Sometimes New York throws out these weird things that are super cool without even trying. I saw this little tidbit on twitter and decided that it was the perfect place to show off my Le Grande Hat on a sunny Friday afternoon. I mean, I had work to do, but still… it was time to get on a train and explore! glossier1

This is me on the train. I have worn those embroidered Kesh Beauty Hamsa bracelets to a frazzle, but I love them. Notice the tall hat? We’re gonna talk about it a little later…

glossier2

I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, but when you see a sandwich board inviting you to come get your nails done, it sounds like that’s the place you’re looking for. The display case with Glossier products kind of confirmed that. We’re here! And it was really close to the subway. Impossible to get lost, and that’s a blessing in New York.  glossier3

It was one of those places that it’s impossible not to like. there was an outdoor area, lots of pretty but weirdly cool plants, and hey- they like happiness. I mean, there was an actual sign. I’m addicted to happy these days, so when I go somewhere and find that it’s sanctioned and encouraged, I stay put.  glossier6

Check this out, people were, indeed, getting their nails done- so it wasn’t just an empty promise. Also, no one put any pressure on me to do it, so that made me even more comfortable. I just wanted to poke around and see what this Glossier thing was about. glossier5From what I could see, there was skin care as well as a lightly tinted moisturizer or BB cream. I’m skittish when it comes to trying new skin care brands, surprise!, so I kept looking and listening. I thought the sales people were pr ladies, and I gave one my card like I was at a blogger event. Mortified! She was nice about it though.

glossier7

I liked the decor, it reminded me of my apartment, to be honest. glossier4

I’m glad that bag was in a case, because I could see myself snatching it up. So pretty, that blush color pink! Not to mention fluffy, which is a thing this coming fall season. Glossier knows what’s up.  glossier92

I like these. I think I want plants like these in my house. This little pin seemed to be part of the free gift that they were giving the people who purchased things.   glossier93

there’s a sensory deprivation room, with soft music and crinkly foil walls. So Warhol! Which of course made me not relax. But then, I can’t relax anywhere, not even at yoga. I sat in the bean bag and listened to the music and watched the light on the walls changed and then I took a selfie and went back to the showroom. The Le Grande Hat looked divine, don’t you think? So Cat in the hat, but no stripes and if the cat was a Rastafarian. glossier8Then I decided that I would commit the 20 minutes for a free facial. The sweet sales girl explained the process (pick one and try it) and decided on the Mega Greens Galaxy Pack detoxifying mask ($22) because I hadn’t relaxed in the silver room, and also because by this point I trusted them. I cleaned my face with the wipes provided, and then slathered on some relaxation and went outside on the roof deck
glossier9
Finally… warm sun, face mask, sweating a little; it was like a sauna. Now I can tell you about the hat. Remember that time we went to the Brooklyn Museum and ran into the French Guy? Well, being nosy I ran and emailed him when I put up the blog link and set up an interview. These are his original design, and they are instantly eye-catching. Everywhere I went men asked where I had gotten my hat. Everywhere. A few tried it on. Le Grande Hat is a life changer accessory.
glossier91
I sat there in my hat letting my skin bake and I felt amazing. If you’re in New York, make sure you run over to the Glossier Showroom this Friday. The address is on the invite at the top of this post and it’s open to the public from 11am to 6pm. I heard 9/4 may be the last Friday. If you want to check out the products available go to Glossier.com.

clothing, Fashion, jewelry, millenials, trends

in which we get a look at the boohoo aw2015 collection and #WeAreUSA campaign

bhm9

So remember last time, when we went over to boohoo clothing to see the men’s aw2015 collection and glimpsed this tray of jewelry? They were sweet enough to give me some info on what’s coming for the ladies both for ss2015 and aw2015!

because SEB is awesome.

bhw1

I got a copy of their newsletter, boo hoo Stylefix, which broadcast their summer social media campaign #WeAreUSA- featuring Angel Hayes,  and forecast the trends of the coming hot weather season. Be on the lookout for a Mexican and Western American influence, blue and white are hot, lace, and stealing from the boys in minimalistic, clean-lined pieces.

bhw2

This summer, the London based retailer has focused on the multifaceted nature of the millenial female, showcasing hip/punk, sweet Lolita, and athleisure styles on people like dj Hannah Bronfman. The prices are hyper affordable, and a community has sprung up around the #WeAreUSA hashtag. Biggest trend this summer? Being who you are.

bhw4

For the aw2015 collection the forecast is 70s. Leather look dresses with grommets and blouses with pussycat bows, instant sophistication. Also loving this plaid coat which is sweet without being sugary.

bhw5

Jump ahead to the 80s and the red neoprene motorcycle jacket with sleeve grommets can work with the fringey skirt or the denim outfit. Loving how the denim top works a frayed edge into the equation. bhw3

boohoo Night is a sexy collection of tailored, bodycon dresses and jumpsuits with cutouts and embellishments for serious holiday party appearances. Stay warm and cozy under this furry overcoat. Don’t forget your mittens!

in which we go to the boohoo man aw2015 press preview

Yep, more excitement. I got an invitation to go see the boohoo man aw2015 collection. But of course, since everything around here is a process…bhm1

Lately, I’ve been going to bed at night like a normal person. meaning, it gets dark and I turn the light off and go to sleep. No social media or junkie-like internet surfing, no TV. I go to SLEEP. As a result I get up at literally the crack of dawn, and since i feng shui’d my bed, I can watch it happen.bhm2

Into the bathroom for grooming! I’m trying out some new toothpaste (review coming up) from Hello oral care products thanks to influenster vox, along with this Slim Sonic Destination toothbrush in New York ($14.95 and really cute, comes with batteries). bhm3

These days, I head out to the park for a pre-blogday walk. I’m working my way up to running, honestly. It had rained the day before so I layered up with my french terry Life is good hoodie under a J Crew terry cardigan. These are the Gemini capri tights that I got in my RS Beauty& Balance goodie bag. Those sneakers? Those are the water shoes that I picked up at the Tommy Bahama Island Life event. Not like anyone’s gonna ask if they’re real sneakers or not, and they’re cute. bhm4

I had just gotten a new bracelet from Lisa Hoffman Beauty, and I felt like this was the perfect day to put it on. LHB is just launching their Vibrant Collection. So instead of the usual round beads, the’re faceted, which makes them that mush more light reflecting and luxurious. This is the Tuscan Fig bracelet ($65), with faceted honey-hued agate beads, rose gold plated spacers and a rose gold fragrance pendant. The color of the  bracelet reflects the sweet fig/vanilla bean/coconut wood fragrance that will emanate from the pendant throughout the day.

bhm5

I was feeling frisky because of the warm-ish Spring weather and sunlight, so I went with this basic boho outfit. Thrifted white shirt and ruffled lambswool sweater, handpainted (by me with fabric paint) Dittos Brand Charlie boyfriend distressed jeans, Cat Footwear Squander boot ($140) , and my very own custom made REpurposing NOLA boho-chic handbag (priceless)bhm5a

I totally admit to taking the rest of the morning to bake cookies to give to the pr people and getting there late. But I gave them cookies, so… you know. bhm6

This is what to expect for aw2015 on the boohoo man shoe front- colored combat boots, sleek leather-esque trainers and sweet looking wingtip style sneakers. Nothing fancy, but it betokens a restrained pint of view, sort of minimalist.

These are the perfect shoes to go with this paint splattered neoprene sweatshirt (mine, I want it!) and these 70s style patchwork jeans. I’m really into that little touch of color in the black/white sweatshirt with the drawstring at the waist. Personally, I would prob throw a gold shoe under this outfit, just to be that way.

bhm7

I was also really into this pink sweatshirt with the camo patches. It would look great on a guy, or on a woman, oversized and worn with a pencil skirt and heels. Or get it big and wrap it around your hips like a skirt, tying the arms around you. That’s gender equality! We’re sharing sweatshirts!bhm8

Yes, i did put this men’s coat on and take a selfie. It looks so good on me! It fit perfectly, too. The big zippered pockets can act like a handbag, and I loved the knitted sleeves (hold out that nasty winter cold) that you could put bracelets and bangles over. The knitted collar is perfect for laying chunky knit infinity scarves on top of. And I love how it hangs open just so, revealing my chic Aries necklace from ShopJacquelineRose.

Gender equality! We’re buying a coat as a couple to share (but really, I’m keeping it for me).bhm9

On the way out, I spotted this western-influenced statement jewelry in shades of turquoise and mother-of-pearl and hinted that I’d love a boohoo lookbook for the women’s aw2015 collection. Wait til you see what they have coming!!!
