The Fresh Stylist

I started following Jerelyn Tavarez of DresslikeJ on instagram after participating in a #consistencychallenge led by lifestyle inluencer The Mattie James during quarantine. I got to witness her work at stayI got creative when we were all stuck inside and slowly I started looking forward to her fashion styling magic. It’s not just about looking at some random person wearing clothes? It’s that she messes with her stuff so that it completely expresses her personality. At this point, I cringe at them word fashion (honestly) so it takes a lot for me to like personal style bloggers. But how can you dislike someone who will turn her clothing inside out, upside down and backward?

You can’t. It’s impossible. She makes dressing up look like fun, plus she will have you running to your closet to play with your own stuff which can either lead to a lot of compliments or just a fun evening drinking wine and dressing up. What I like about DresslikeJ is that she leaves her followers room to be delighted, both with her ingenuity and their own possibilities. Who doesn’t need that? So I sent Jerelyn a few items from my online shops to work her magic on.

The dress:

Jerelyn chose a Farm patterned kimono top dress that slimmed down to a pencil skirt, bold statement earrings and an upcycled denim jacket that I designed. I can’t lie, I was really excited to see how she would work with these pieces. She did not let me down.

Jerelyn Tavarez of DesslikeJ

Perfection! Jerelyn gives off a casual but glam summer vibe, and I love how she puts a red and blue dress with a bright yellow shoe and gold bag. It’s a subtle nod to the gold flecks in the earrings, and brings a shot of surprise to the outfit that makes it a head turner.

True to her style, she turned the dress around and it’s stunningly sexy. The tie across the front is reminiscent of a harness bra or a lariat necklace. It’s sensational. Jerelyn told me “I loved the dress as is! Wanted to add a pop of yellow to feel a little vibrant. Then I thought of wearing it backwards. Instead of hiding the strings figured I would create a cute little detail in the front. Voila, a different outfit!”

The jacket:

Jerelyn Tavares of DresslikeJ wears SEBMarketBK upcycled denim jacket

Here’s how Jerelyn styled my upcycled piece: “The jacket was the main focus so I didn’t want to take away from it. Decided to do something different and align the jacket a bit uneven. Paired it with a pair of blue track pants and wore my strappy sandals. Decided to wrap the straps around the pants for a more stylish look!”

Of course I had to get Jerelyn to give a little interview for the blog.

The DresslikeJ interview:

SEBMarketBK: What got you into fashion blogging?

DresslikeJ: I would always get compliments on my style. People would ask me, “where did you get that?” I would tell them it’s just a top I wore backwards or a dress I wore as a skirt and they would be shocked. Social media started becoming such a huge source for information so my friends started pushing me to start expressing my love for clothes and style on IG. In November, I started with Fashion Tip Fridays then during quarantine, I was able to dedicate more time and work on new ideas. I also have to thank Sidewalker Daily. I was taking a group coaching class and they played such a huge role in me creating the newsletter.

SEBMarketBK: You have such a fun, sexy style! Where does your inspiration come from?

DresslikeJ: Thank you! My inspiration comes from everywhere. I get ideas from anything and I also like to switch up the way we might normally wear a specific item. I love both Solange & Tracy Ellis Ross’s style. & I love combining different patterns and prints. Accessorizing is key to me.

SEBMarketBK: If you had to pack a bag for a mystery trip leaving in an hour, what would you grab?

DresslikeJ: Giiirrrlll!!! I’m going to assume this is a summer trip and it’s for the weekend haha! So I would grab two swimsuits, sunglasses, 2-3 head wraps, a maxi dress, a bikini top to pair with some dressy pants, Nike sandals, two pairs of biker shorts, two tees, one sexy fitted dress, a pair of dramatic earrings. Oh and a pair of cute flats that go with everything plus a pair of sexy heels! Oh and can’t forget my liquid highlighter!!! Need to have that glow where ever I am!

SEBMarketBK: Have you picked up any new styling skills from quarantine?
I’ve been able to be more creative with my own fits and recycle pieces I never thought I’d wear again. I’ve also been trying to learn how to use safety pins correctly! Sounds crazy but I would always have my friends do it for me.

SEBMarketBK: Where do you see DresslikeJ in five years? What do you want for yourself and your brand?

DresslikeJ: Wow! I am hoping to have my own fashion consulting business and an online boutique where people can buy my pieces!

Check out DresslikeJ on instagram and don’t forget to sign up for her Fashion Tip Fridays newsletter. You can also shop her closet here.

Until next time!

The Hair Clips

It took me a second but I finally got around to noticing the hair clip craze. Well… I saw some things happening but I couldn’t make up my mind if it was a for real moment or just some people being silly. It’s fashion. It could have been anything. If I didn’t start it myself, then I have a to take a long hard look at who did. I’m a horrible person.

Anyway.

Once I noticed some strength in the hair clip movement (for me it’s when you see totally different types of people jumping on the wagon and making it theirs) I decided to curate my own collection of must haves. Let’s get all up in it now.

1.Word clips:

I thought this was going to sink at first, but then I saw more examples and I started liking the free, playful fun of it all. Sparkly rhinestones spelling out…whatever. It’s a mood! In a stick straight chignon or curly, coily afro it’s a MOOD.

2. Stars:

I love stars. Star clips take that beauty from the heavens and has it streaking across your head. This silver cascade is attached to a springy french clip, perfect for half ponytails. The hammered brass and enamel star is a perfect accent piece. Use green eyeshadow, contacts or liner to bring the color of the stars to your eyes.

3. Feathers:

These gently curling, super realistic feather barettes are the minimalist style accent that will have people sneaking glances at you. Brush hair tightly back on one side and clip, leave the rest free. Irresistible in any hair type.

4. Giant barettes:

These are giant, sophisticated and glittery versions of the clips you had as a kid. It brings a 90s trend, barrettes for big girls, into sharp 21st century focus by blowing them up and blinging them out. Don’t stress the placement, just stick a few in your hair before you leave. No stress, big style.

5. Hair chains:

Hair jewelry pops up every so often and everyone acts as if it were new, but chains for hair have been around for a minute or two. In Europe the Renaissance featured romantic ringlets pulled back and adorned with gold and jewels. They also feature in Indian wedding jewelry. With Africans, the chains may be braided into the hair, with jewels dangling down on the forehead. This simple piece takes all of that and rolls it into one modern piece that can be draped over the head with golden beads focused on the front, loops of chain framing the head. True poetry. I got this one at the crazy closing sale of the Topshop in Soho.

6. Flower crowns:

I have no intention of giving up on flower crowns.

What are your favorite accessory trends? Do you feel naked without a little sparkle? what’s your fave hairstyle to add some flair to? Talk amongst yourselves.

See you next time!

The Skirt

Started in the 70s, resurfaced in the 90s, still slaying in 2019. The simple, a-line smasher, the prim but naughty must have…the button down skirt.

I was watching the wicked A Simple Favor on Hulu and I started noticing that Anna Kendrick’s character Stephanie was killing it in her tidy button down skirts. She had multiple versions and they fit into her perfect little mommy vlogger facade. They were beautifully fitted to her frame and it made me think about how easily we dismiss people who are casually nailing it every day. Today, I salute the button down skirt in three ways.

Let’s go!

70s:

The 70s were good for lacy romantic bohemian looks, so I paired this wine red corduroy mini with a flouncy lace top. The top is machine lace layered over a cream camisole, with 70s looking, fluttery wing sleeves. Delicate star bracelets, a handmade shopper tote from RePurposing NOLA and Minnetonka fringed boots finish the look without being costume-y. Marcia, Marcia, Marcia!

90s:

90s syle was more grunge than romance. This super retro looking Firth denim skirt (love the two front pockets) rocks with a cropped Guess t-shirt and a sweet Love You More necklace. . Trucker hat? Yep. Espadrilles with crazy socks? Check. And a faux snakeskin hobo from Kensie to lug your cds and your ticket to Lollapalooza.

2019:

Come as you are is every day in 2019. Throw hip hop, grunge and punk in a blender for a day of navigating social media and sometimes real life. Shoutout to Brooklyn with this Derek Heart shortsleeved hoodie, which works perfectly with a black Firth faux suede button down mini. My upcycled Lone Wolf denim jacket , bamboo earrings and pre-loved Converse all-stars are streetstyle gold. Finish with a vintage 80s silver crossbody (you can tie it on your waist, too) and you’re out.

Here’s more advice on how to style these darling little button front skirts, try this Styecaster article and this other one on Grazia Daily.

The Friends

I’m not going to say how, but I managed to get into the sold-out Friends NYC Pop-up and it’s pretty much everything you’d expect. Check it out. Could it BE anymore perfect?

Way back in the day, before we all just inhaled shows like air and had to watch commercials, there was this weekly sitcom(situation comedy, fyi) called FRIENDS. It was about some people who were friends. The show became a global phenomenon, with the six stars becoming the white hot focus of all the attention that we now lavish on instagram models. They were the Insecure of the 90s/00s.

If you ever thought about how cool it would be cavort on a couch in front of a fountain, the time has come. Awesome replica of the California set created to replicate a New York area that doesn’t exist.

How cute is this?

Character memorabilia is everywhere…of course, right? Including surprises like Rachel’s wigs. This pinstraight, highlighted and blonded bob wig is life. I want one. I’m also in LOVE with this outfit. No one cuts skirts this way anymore. I also feel like shortsleeved turtlenecks are a forgotten treasure.

I don’t want to give away every little thing, but i loved the way this experience brings the show into three dimensional life all around you. Part of the reason that the show was so popular is that people can easily imagine themselves as part of Central Perk gang. Eminently relatable, even at it’s most chaotic and silly moments, the show has become an ever present background noise that’s both comforting and endlessly amusing.

The show is sold out and I got to see it through sheer universal accident? But if you’re in NYC you can try their standby line at 76 Mercer. There’s also a retail shop at 503 Broadway with a timed ticket and standby line. Check them out here for more info.

BTW, since because this blog is about me, here’s an ootd. It was a cool rainy evening and the first time that I had to layer up. I handpainted the back of this Forever 21 camo shirtjacket (which I bought on depop from yakiecast), and wore it over a thrifted Gap pinstriped button down and Hanes v-neck tshirt.

The soft, premium denim skinnies are Buffalo David Britton and found at Century 21. . Old Navy was selling umbrellas 2 for $10 and I got this sweet animal print one. I kind of liked this outfit, even though I had a time putting all my stuff in a purse the size of an eyeglass case (Erin Dana prince minaudiere, $180 for regular people, given away for free at my (former) fashion job). The whole outfir reminded me of the time Joey put on all of Chandler’s stuff.

Good times.

Are you a Friends fan? Who’s your favorite character? What is your stance on camo for fall? Are tiny purses really ‘it’? Discuss.

See you next time!

The Feather Jacket

The one where I bought some chicken feathers and I had this denim jacket. Trying to get some use out of that time in art school that I’m still in debt for.

About to be hyped up.

I won a contest and got $100 to go shopping, I saw a plain, Old Navy denim jacket and I got so happy because I had a bunch of paint in colors that I never use ,plus some gold glitter that I got at Micheal’s. With Labor Day coming I was thinking that I wanted something that expressed that part of my culture (my family is from Guyana) without me having to wear anything that caused my bottom half to be exposed to all the world.

Prudish Yankee. I know. I don’t whine up and I can’t twerk. My soul is now bare.

I saw some feathers at the fabric store and the wheels started turning and I was like Eureka! or Irie…or whatever and even though I have no experience putting feathers on anything I knew my moment had come. It was time.

The fields of color are inspired by one of my favorite painters, Mark Rothko. It’s funny what the eye and heart will respond to. I went to a school where I was outnumbered and learned about artists who didn’t share my gender or race, but there you go. I love Rothko’s glowing, living fiends of dreamy saturated color. The idea of the color itself being the art, to force you to just contemplate the meaning and feel of a shade or hue is very powerful to me. This jacket needed gradations of tropical, vibrant shades that blend into each other like a layered frozen cocktail.

Once the paint was dry I added two rows of feathers for the win. Like the feathers on beautiful mas costumes worn by goddesses from places like Guyana, Jamaica, Trinidad, etc. Gold glitter is dusted across the shoulders and feathers like highlighter on brown skin. It’s the whole West Indian Day Parade and Carnival and Cropover in one upcycled jacket. I thought about adding rhinestones or big fake jewels but I liked it this way. Business in the front, bacchanal in the back.

White guy art meets black female immigrant culture. It’s so fetch.

The Dr. and the Diva

A little show business adventure right here.

Stephanie Locke and Dr. Steve Salvatore on the set of their new talk show.

I didn’t manage to make it anywhere near a beach this summer because I made six or seven different plans for myself and none of them included relaxing. One of my plans was getting into background acting but I’ve been too busy for auditions. I signed up with Central Casting and haven’t had time to go back with my wigs and glasses to update my look. And every time they text me about a job I either don’t get picked or I’m working that day.

But the universe loves me, so I usually get what I want. Not as much as I think I want, but just enough to let me know I’m on the right track. Like back in the crazy days of blogging when random emails sent me running out the door to fashion shows and product launches, I got a random email looking for paid audience members. Kinda like background acting, and it was an adventure.

They asked for brightly colored tops, so I bought this squash colored eyelet sleeved tshirt at Old Navy and paired it with my fave thrifted Topshop pants. Bigass glasses? Check! Cranberry Stilleto lip whip from Beauty Bakerie? Check (lasts all day, so I figured it was a good move). I got the multi-strand Universal Thread bracelet with brass hardware from Target while I was shopping for toiletries.

We went out to the studio, got breakfast and then worked hard to be good, responsive audience members. I have never clapped so much in my life. We worked through two tapings (with a break for a catered lunch) and then they dropped us back in the city. Not a bad adventure.

The show stars Kimberley Locke, a singer -songwriter who happened to come in third on American Idol in 2003. She’s paired with co-host Dr.Steve Salvatore and together they lead the audience through topical questions, heart wrenching true stories and health, food and beauty segments. The show debuts September 9th on these channels.

The Shopping Trip

I know I’ve been gone for a minute. The whole javascript pre-bootcamp bootcamp had me in an isolation tailspin. I had to re-learn going outside, talking to people about things other than coding and dealing with the fact that not going to the gym for three weeks straight has me eligible for fat camp.

But life goes on, and things keep happening so here I am again.

I am this awesome. My Closet Cleanse ootd with handpainted Old Navy hi-tops.

I follow celebrity stylist June Ambrose (if you don’t know who she is, she is the genius behind Missy Elliott’s groundbreaking looks in videos like The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)so she is actually iconic, for real with facts to back that up). She advertised her annual Closet Cleanse sale on instagram, happening at Selima Optique (she has a collab with them selling big, fabulous frames. I got excited, then looked at my credit card balance and deflated, but at the end of the day I got dressed and went.

I wore my Duryea’s t-shirt from Montauk Mainstay, DKNY super soft yoga culottes , my big ass Zeelol frames over the Polar Grey ttdeye contacts (I like making people question whether my eyes or glasses are fake. ) and the Old Navy sneakers that I made into wearable art. A very special summertime outfit- plus my new wig, which we’ll talk about later. See above collage.

June Ambrose’s Closet Cleanse event at Selima Optique, Aug 17th.

I was late because I had convinced myself that it would be super crowded with awful women fighting and snatching and being fashion crazy. It reminded me of when I was a kid and my mom would force me to go outside. I had to be my own mom and motivate myself to leave the house and interact with other humans while possibly getting some bargains. It was real.

Once I got there, it was kind of mellow. The power shoppers had been and gone with a lull for lunch that I stepped into. The racks were scattered throughout the front of the store. Bins with $10 items were on the floor and there were piles of merch on the counters. It was heaven for thrifters.

Display cases were full of opulent accessories. Hermes, Maison Martin Margiela, and more.

The sale started at 11 am and I got there around two, so I missed a lot, but there were still great items everywhere. I saw Chanel, Givenchy, Marc Jacobs, and labels that I had never heard of. Between my budget and the fact that I’ve been shopping for months (both for me and for inventory) I might have gone crazy.

I got three things, and while I was standing on line June Ambrose came up, looked at my stuff and gave me an additional discount on this Margaret M. pencil skirt. I am not good at dealing with celebrities, so I don’t have a selfie with her, I didn’t take photos of her, and I didn’t want to be all up her butt so I didn’t even really start a conversation with her. I figured that everyone who came to the sale knew she was famous because how else did you know about the sale? It was nice of her to give me a discount, though. Customer service is customer service no matter who gives it to you, so 5 stars on the customer service!

I spent the money I saved at June’s daughter’s table outside. Summer Hope Chamblin, who is prominently featured on her mom’s instafeed, was out on the street in front of the boutique selling watermelon lemonade and various baked goods. She kind of made me buy this chocolate chip cookie (I’m not a fan) which I ended up liking, and I got two oatmeal raisin cookies to eat with my Dean and Deluca honey vanilla latte. Anytime I go out to Soho, especially if there’s shopping involved, I have to stop in there for a treat.

Turned out to be an ok Saturday afternoon!

Do you ever have a hard time leaving the house to do things? Does it sometimes feel too hard to face the world of people lurking outside? What is the one thing that can tip you out of bed and out the door? Talk amongst yourselves.

See you next time!

The Vintage Strapless Dress

Sweetly nostalgic photo by Shoott Photos, on location at the Nomo Sho Hotel. Get a 10% discount on your print order with this link: https://shoott.com/?ref=B3RTLTR

I love the sweet and simple silhouette of this 50s floral strapless summer dress. Whisper light cotton strewn with pastel flowers faded by time. I didn’t have a strapless bra in my kit for this shoot, so I decided to make it more 2019 with visible bra. I liked the harder edge of the bedazzled denim vest, with a studded gold shoulder bag and laser cut metallic leather espadrilles.

With the proper undergarments you could do a summer princess look with a ballerina bun and coordinating ballet flats (soft aqua, blush pink, or fuschia would be the best colors). A strapless push up makes the most of the bares shoulders and collarbone, a waist shaper, and there’s room for a crinoline to fluff the skirt out. Plus some sweet little white gloves and a pastel colored clutch. Too cute.

This is a great summer in the city look, mixing that old fashioned floral with rocker chic edge.

The 90s Bag

This is the first item that I upcycled for SEB Market BK. I found this old, beat up bag with a fake plastic Prada tag and fell in love. I thought it was the perfect piece to sell on my new online stores.

The bag is very distinctive. It’s like a flat envelope or something and when you open it up, you realize that there are five separate pockets. For some reason it has velcro instead of snaps to keep it closed. Then a long, thin, sinewy black plastic strap, like a shopping bag. For a plain white knockoff bag it’s kind of dramatic.

It didn’t sell right away and I kept looking at it, trying to figure out what it needed. I realized that the plain white surface had a roiling night sky in it’s soul, with veins of gold running through. The little hand-painted grosgrain ribbon bow features a bronze spike, like a punk chocolate kiss. It took a little sanding to get the paint to stick, and then the whole thing had to be sprayed with a fixative to protect the surface.

Off the shoulder, ruffles and metallics for a sweetly flirtatious summer fit.

This is the perfect summer date night, walking down the shore, hanging out with the girls outfit. The architectural ruffle detail on the skirt goes so well with the floaty off the shoulder top. Adding a carved black bangle (pushed up the forearm, not sitting at the wrist) and bronze laser cut espadrilles are all the accessorizing you need.Maybe a little gold necklace… The 90s bag adds some creative edge and flair, especially with the hit of red from the little bow. It toughens up the look, but in a fun way.

Casual (artsy) fridays.

I liked it with a streamlined casual work look that can be a night out look if you add heels. The bag is your crazy. For night swap the checked uniqlo shirt and for a tube top, and unzip the ankles of the skinny jeans and let them hangover the spiked heels. New outfit, who dis?

See you next time!

in which we run off to see a rehearsal of La Sylphide at NYC Ballet

20160212_172141

While everyone else was off at NYFW, I was running in the other direction to attend a members only rehearsal of the New York City Ballet’s production of La Sylphide. Fancy.

Of course I ended up almost missing it. I only had to take one train, but still managed to have to run the few blocks over to Lincoln Center.

Managed to make it just in time. I took this right after I got into my seat.

I have actually never been to the NYC Ballet before, so I took a minute to walk around after the performance.
