in which i go to the Beauty 20 Awards dressed like a grownup

How do you know you’re making progress in blogland? The level of your invitations goes up, and your goody bag gets heavier.

Well, ok maybe that’s just me.

But here’s the thing- one invitation can only lead to another. I won a trip to Sniffapalooza, which led me to Beautypress, which got me to Spotlight Day, which landed me squarely at The Beauty 20 Awards.

I just had to dress like someonme who had some sense for a change.

beauty201

Luckily? I had just gotten some dry cleaning done. I ripped open that plastic and suddenly had a ladylike outfit- that just happened to have all the color of a rainbow.

In order to be presentable, I clothed myself in an Escada jacket with velvet lapels and pocket flaps, a white button down shirt and A-line skirt with front pleat and slit pockets from Ann Taylorn and the appropriate footwear in the form of black (freshly polished) Franco Sarto heels. My Grafton frames from glasses.com and my ShopJacquelineRose black buddha mala necklace (stands for prosperity) rounded out my disguise.

I mean outfit. Ahem. I sprayed on some Joy Forever, because being a lady isn’t just about your clothing.

beauty202

Located in the lovely 404 Space in Mid-town manhattan, the first floor featured tables where the creme of the beauty industry chatted and networked. Everyone received a glossy box and a copy of New Beauty magazine upon check-in. Then it was upstairs to survey the buffet. I put down my jacket, glossy box and my ParMana Designs Dream Awake shoulder bag to load up on  Mediteranean style olive salad and feta cheese, and the most delicious salted caramel ice cream.

Yum.

beauty203

With a deliciously earthy glass of red wine, I settled in to snack and observe. And to open my first Glossy Box ever. Now I know what the fuss was about-  I got shampoo and conditioner from Uberliss, a highlighting creme from Kryolan, moisturizer from Eslor, and glittery nail polish from SpaRitual. Imean- hello?!?!?!:? Thank you sir, can I have another?

the only problem was that when the awards started, I was still eating, sipping wine, and looking through my copy of New Beauty. So I stayed on the mezzanine, and got comfortable. It was kind of like being the only VIP. Or a leper, but I like to look on the bright side.

beauty204

Arent these gorgeous? Every winner gets one of these and is allowed a 5 word acceptance speech. Startedin Paris by InnoCos Events in 2013, the Beauty 20 Awards are all about how our beauty companies are serving their customers and audiences vi 21st century technology. It’s a brand new day in beauty, and just handing out lipsticks at counters isn’t enough. Customers have to be engaged, and these winners are the best in the game.

When the awards were over (on schedule I might add) I was given another bag as a souvenir. I couldn’t even wait to get it home- I started rummaging through it on the train. They gave everyone the limited edition Net-A-Porter Glossy Box which had samples from Klorane, RGB cuticle oil, Ellis Faas‘s gorgeously lethal mascara, Kevyn Aucoin eyeshadow… insane. I loved it.

It was definitely worth putting on heels- even if my heels self-destructed on my way to the event. I’d rather have to go to the shoemaker than have missed my first awards show.

Next up: Dating Diary! Perrier, central Park, and that time we saw Scott Ian at the Strand Bookstore…

in which i finally make it to a Beautypress event (Spotlight Day)

I actually missed a free boat ride this summer.

sunset1

Thanks to that time I went to Sniffapalooza, I was invited to the Beautypress Summer Sunset Sail and thanks to bad planning and the fact that I walk really slowly and kind of had nothing to wear really but tried anyway, I ended up getting on the train late and never made it to the pier.sunset2sunset3

All of this happened without me… All. Of. This. And then they sailed past the Statue of Liberty, so me missing the boatride was faintly un-American.  sunset4

So when they asked if I wanted to go to Spotlight Day, I was all in. I woke up early (well, early in the afternoon, I picked the cocktail hour option) and made sure that I was dressed and out of the house in time to make it. I was NOT missing this event.

spotlightday1

I threw on my fave brown velvet blazer over that basic h&m striped tee I bought in August and squeezed myself into my true shape jeans from LL Bean, which look adorable even while accomodating my Chubby Chubs belly. I embellished it with my new perforated leather bow tie with contrasting stitching that I got from Lesley Ware at Nolche Verde, and by gorgeous Ariel charm necklace from ShopJacquelineRose. I was ready, and I was determined to be ON TIME. spotlightday5

Made it! And it was AMAZING. As soon as you come in the door- beauty products. Moisturizers, mascara, eyeliner, press-on nails, false eyelashes, EVERYTHING you need to be a girl.

And then some extra stuff so you can be an uber girl, then go home and peel it all off. The first thing in my bag was the Derma E firming moisturizer, along with an amazing eye pencil from Xtreme Lash (a soft, velvety kohl effect).  Kiss & ImPress Press-On Manicures was offering free mani-makeovers and also eyelash applications. spotlightday2

I met Meredith Smith of Sweet Anthem Perfumes. A former Microsoft employee, she’s turned to the world of fragrance with a collection of scents based on literature. Every fragrance is named for a character in a book or myth. She just got picked up by Anthropologie.com, and hopes to open a brick and mortar shop here in New York one day.

spotlightday3

Lavera is a European company that sells cosmetics through health food stores across the world. Which kind of blew my mind. If you don’t go to health food stores, then you’re missing out- because they are not at Sephora at all. They gave me a sample from their skincare line, True Natural, a hydrating moisturizer featuring spagyric, organic pearl extract, organic shea butter and anti-oxidant vitamin E. They also do an organic self-tanning line, which was featured in Elle magazine.

spotlightday4

Saw my fave makeup lady Lauren Napier who was showing off her amazing CLEANSE wipes. I still remember meeting her at The Makeup Show and tucking her wipes into my goodie bags at my first anniversary celebration. It’s always a pleasure to see Lauren and hear about her progress. CLEANSE is currently sold at Kenig Alcone, right here in NY. On the way to the cocktail bar I ran into Rana Campbell, who I had met briefly at the Katty Xiomara Nolcha Fashion Week Show last month. I recognized her by her Otterbox Symmetry phone case, lol! spotlightday6

Time for refreshments… lovely prosecco cocktails with either raspberry or beet, and delicious sandwiches from Le Pain Quotidien. So good. I got a flute with raspberry first and then went back for the one with the beet slice since it was such an interesting idea- and healthy drinking, right? And the french bread sandwiches were delicious. Just the right bit for the moment. spotlightday7

I dropped by the Bodyography table and spoke to Lori Lieb, who is passionate about her product and has flawless eyeshadow. She showed off her Electric Lip Slides, glorious burts of lip nourishing color that can be used as a lipstick, gloss or stain. Really impressive product. And Bodyography makeup is PETA certified, vegan, and gluten free. spotlightday8When I got home and emptied out my editor bag, I had all of this… so we’re going to be talking about beauty for awhile. Yay!

the reality of MBFW, the sassy perspective of things.

So, as we may have figured out, I am a person who loves fashion but stil remembers that I am a flesh and blood person. maybe because I worked behind the scenes as a student and had some actual experience in how shows and events are put together, I’m not as bowled over as other people. Or maybe I’m now a jaded new Yorker (again). In any case- I loved loved loved knowing that I had a right to go to some shows, but I also had some other concerns.

Like how not to sweat through whatever I was wearing. (Massive, nasty, humid, HEAT WAVE for ss2015 NYFW/MBFW *historical notation)

nyfwrecap1

The first festivity was the Befohr party at the Jimmy Lounge at the James Hotel in Soho- which you guys already read an account of here. The reality is spending the evening wanting to go swimming, then heading home on the subway and window shopping on Nostrand Avenue when the train dumps you out on Flatbush (3 stops from where you need to be). This bag is to die, isn’t it? Love.

nyfwrecap2

This is me out at the table burning the hell up, but determined to gauge customer reaction to the addition of mauby to the table menu. I even offered free tastes. I sold a few, then ran home to glue myself together to go to Lincoln center for the Desigual ss2015 show (we already reviewed that here). SOOOOO happy to get a little glamor in my life, lol! Woo hoo!nyfwrecap3

I managed to get into this striped Daisy Fuentes for Kohl’s dress (which I had wanted since I saw it at the Fall Press Preview). I wore some cool pieces from Shop Jacqueline Rose (the illumination hand chain, the green oasis bracelet, and the black buddha mala for prosperity), and I made sure to carry my ParMana Designs Dream Awake shoulder bag. I love carrying things from people I know and like. It’s like having friends with me.

nyfwrecap4

After the show, there’s a mad rush- some towards the front row celebs, some trying to get backstage and some (like me) trying to go get some free beverages. These are just little moments that struck me on the way out. Nothing amazing, just images that brought things back down to a human persepctive after watching Adriana Lima bounce down the runway.

nyfwrecap5

I was photographing the SK-II installation and wondering if I could grab a bottle and run, when they offered to do something or other to my skin. As soon as I knew that there was a present involved I went for it. It was nice! The lady took my photo with some kind of tablet (it was a cute pic, wish I still had it, actually) and told me nice things about my skin. Then she gave me an SK-II pitera essence mask which I am still hoarding. I liked it, so if I have a sudden attack of aging, I’m set.

nyfwrecap6

nyfwrecap7 nyfwrecap8

Then I just wandered around getting things. I got a card from the Papyrus kiosk (same guy as last year, but I guess the better location went to his head. He didn’t let me pick my card this season. he was nicer when he was way in the back and nobody paid attention to him). I checked out the Pandora spot, grabbed a bunch of reading material, stopped to gawk at the E! television set, and gawped over the pretty lit up dress on the Mercedes Benz stage. And thanks to the nice girl at Tresemme with the shiny hair who gave me the whole product spiel. I heart you!

nyfwrecap9 nyfwrecap91 nyfwrecap92

After that I did a little streetsyle. I was back to skulking, it’s too hard to approach people at the tents and I wasn’t really that interested- I just wanted t make sure I had a few things for the blog. A lady had on a silver foil pleated skirt that was like ice in the sun.

nyfwrecap93 nyfwrecap94

Then I went to the Met Opera Shop and picked up schedules for the new season. So many things I’d like to see! I haven’t been to the opera in a while- but check out my first visit here. I made sure to take a few photos of the fountain, and all the stuff I got. I know a lot of people don’t care about ‘the perks of blogging’, but I’m a results oriented person who needs rewards. Sorry. Also, I give stuff away. But for real- if they didn’t give me anything to keep… lol! my greedy ass would prob stay home. And people who say they don’t care are lying.

The next day I took my Desigual wallet/clutch to McDonald’s for my morning wi-fi and breakfast break.

nyfwrecap95

This is me the next day, back at my table. I’m wearing my fave BDG tshirt (cleavage looks perfs in it) as well as my usual bracelets and my new favorite skirt ever from Life is good. See that face? Fashion withdrawal. This was the last day I sat outside selling anything because MBFW makes everything else look small boring, and ugly by comparison. I don’t hate my business and I’m glad I spent the summer doing it, but now I felt like I needed to do better. Bigger. PRETTIER! Later.nyfwrecap96

I couldn’t wait to go to the Katty Xiomara show at Nolcha Fashion Week (see my review). I found a cute little lingerie shop to keep in mind for later, and after the show got some cool skincare samples from Adrian London. There was some moisturizer for men, but the boo doesn’t do skincare (yet.) so I’ve been using it on my hands and feet.

nyfwrecap97

After the skincare was secured (and an otter box iphone case which we may be discussing soon- shhhh! giveaway! shhhh!) it was time for drinkies. I got a Dasani and Don Q rum cocktail, a glass of sparkling (delicious) rose from Franciacorta, and some sorrel wine from Bellaforma. After that I was straight. Strolled home with my nose in the air, too cute for the rest of the world. Yep. I said that.

nyfwrecap98

I had a few days to rest and then I got an amazing invite from Red Door Spas to go BACKSTAGE (you guys heard all about this already… in 3 parts).  It was insane, and fun, and I got so many photos! It was the best.

nyfwrecap99

I had one last invitation, from a small designer named Indigo Apparel. I got myself together- but MBFW was over so… I did my super casual journalist look: Life is good plush terry sweatshirt. LL Bean true shape jeans, armful of pretties and my black buddha mala necklace. Threw on my Freeport field jacket and slouchy floral backpack for fun- even though it was still a little hot.

nyfwrecap991Ran for the train, made into the city, saw this amazing view from the top of the Empire Hotel– and then went home. It was crazy crowded, no one knew where or when the show was starting, and well- no open bar? Hmm.

I gotta go.

Next up: In which I go to Shake Shack with my little brother (Yes.) Stay tuned!

in which i got to the influenster/DKNY #MYNY perfume launch and photograph rita ora, shoot some streetstyle, and get a pretzel from dominique ansel

I’ve been working with the website influenster.com to review products since last year. This adventure started like so many others- I opened my email box and ‘pop’! I had an invitation to an event in NYC’s Madison Square Park.  Seems that DKNY was throwing a launch party to celebrate the introduction of their new perfume, MY NY. Not only were they going to be giving away free samples of the new perfume? But stars Rita Ora and Chrissy Teigen woere going to be on hand, and (much to my foodie delight) pastry star Dominique Ansel (he actually invented the cronut) was going to be at the launch giving every one a free heart-shaped pretzel. Did they have to ask me twice?

C’mon. This is me we’re talking about!

MYNYevent1

I packed my new Life is good slouchy floral knapsack (more about this later when I finally finish recapping July and start talking about August properly) with all the neccessities: New York magazine fashion issue, Desigual laptop bag from NYFW with Asus netbook, and my new friend- Stuffy Hello Kitty McStuffins (more about him later- let’s not get ahead of ourselves, ok?). I decided on a look that I call ‘camp chic’. Green bucket hat, bought on Fulton street for $8, Life is good LOVE creamy shirttail henley over a $1 discount store tank, and the cute bag that I already mentioned.

I wore my Catfootwear Zosia sandals and painted my protruding toenails with Illamasqua Obsess nail varnish and Zoya Yana nail polish, using the second toe as my contrasting accent. My eyes are lined with butter LONDON WINK eye pencil in Union Jack Black, a creamy liner that even I can’t keep from looking amazing. My eyes really popped behind those Grafton frames from the glasses.com’s Kensington Road collection.

I was ready for a day that was sure to include wandering around in the sun trying to dodge photographers in order to get photos. I had no idea that my day would be, well, fun.

MYNYevent2

MYNYevent3When I got there I immediately saw the Rita Ora festooned DKNY bus stop and headed straight over. Everywhere you looked there was someone handing out the red, heart shaped perfume samples or water with the #MYNY hashtag. I walked around shooting pics with my phone, just setting the mood to show off here on the blog, and then Rita Ora showed up.

MYNYevent4 I casually drifted as close as I could and just held my phone still and shot whenever I saw an opening. One thing I learned early in photography school- just wait for your moment. People were flipping out, taking a million shots, trying to angle their camera phones, and missing out. I stood, aimed the phone, and just kept my eye on the screen and my finger on the shutter button. Every time I saw a break in the scrum around her I took a photo.

I didn’t get close ups, but you can see her cute Betsey Johnson-esque razor cut bob (wig?) and the trademark red lips. Her silver DKNY dress is one that I would definitely wear, just layering with it for fall/winter. I actually mention that in my Full Metal Jacket post, which is exclusively on Lucky Community. She wore it with silver platform sneakers. I would have liked to see a little accessorizing, but maybe they didn’t want to detract from the perfume.

MYNYevent5One thing that I did differently was to actually approach people for streetstyle, instead of being anti-social and sneaky. For the first time I felt comfortable just walking up to people and asking their permission. I guess using the phone instead of a real camera takes the pressure off? Anyway, I saw really cool people, like blogger Sameda Coulson (in the tied front shirt and heart-shaped sunnies). Everyone had something special going on, from the cool schoolgirl of this floral shift from Zara with Chanel referencing phone case, to the crisply grown up lady with the gorgeous white dress adorned with geometric lines. Style!

MYNYevent6I was actually getting ready to leave when I ran into Tami Periera of the blog  Ciao Bella 29. I was so not into standing on that line to get a pretzel! But instead, Tami pulled me into her little orbit and we ended up talking and bang! we were next to meet Dominique! I was so nervous, but I managed to get this portrait with my phone. Isn’t he adorable? And he even made a dipping sauce to go with the pretzel! That’s a real chef. AND he was out there all day handing out pretzels. He is my baking hero forever.

MYNYevent7

After getting my Dominique Ansel MYNY pretzel, I ended up getting my photo taken by the DKNY staff photographer. hazel, one of the lovely people interacting with the crowd that day (and she’s from Lincoln, Nebraska- so cool!)  was in the bus stop helping people like me download their free MYNY heart souvenir photos. See:MYNYevent8THIS IS MY NY!!!

product review: vinrella water bottle umbrellas, or why didn’t anyone do this before?!?!?

This is one of those ‘duh!’ products that make you wonder why you never thought to ask how come umbrellas come in crackly plastic or easily soaked cloth sheathes instead of plastic canisters. Vinrella, a brand new company started by an enterprising mother and daughter from Texas, has done the most practical thing in the world- put a cover on an umbrella that protects your belongings from getting soaked. WaterBottle_UmbrellasI got a query asking if I’d be interested in working with the product, and this was a no brainer yes. I was raised by a Guyanese mother with Victorian English values. She was death on leaving the house without tissues, mints, and an umbrella in your purse or bookbag. A lady must be prepared! However, I am always getting stuck with a wet umbrella, shoving it in a plastic bag and then forgetting about it. Then I end up with a mildew-y rusty umbrella that is no longer cute. The Vinrella water bottle umbrella seemed like an answer to my prayers.

vinrella1

I picked red, since it is my unbreakable habit to buy only red umbrellas. I like the idea of pulling out a bright, bold color on a grey and drizzly day. The Vinrella bumbershoot was the perfect red, with a pattern that matches the plastic water bottle style canister that it comes in. You fold up the umbrella and it fits quite neatly into the canister. The handle screws on securely, so you could actually clip this to your bag, along with your keys. I popped it into my bag when I went out to do my street vending for the day (which is going quite nicely, thank you!).

IMG_1408630947497

Popped it right into my Life is good stowaway canvas tote. Where it fit like any other umbrella or water bottle. So far so good… but what’s gonna happen when it actually rains? I’ll tell you…

vinrella official

I literally got caught outside in the rain after an event. I had just started home and there was a massive crack of thunder and the heavens opened. Yes! I pulled my Vinrella umbrella out of my bag, unscrewed the canister, and unsheathed my umbrella. I went out and while others were scurrying, I was sheltered under a decent sized cover, in stunningly defiant red with flowing peacock feather graphic.

I got to my destination, closed the umbrella with the plastic button which is so much easier to find and operate than the usual metal blade thingy. I got it closed, and swirled the wet umbrella back together and put it in the canister. DONE. That’s it- I was done. My stuff was dry and I just opened the umbrella at ome and let it air dry overnight, then back in it’s canister.

Drawbacks? If you’re making multiple trips make sure to pour the collected water out of the canister, and I worry a little about whether or not the plastic bottle will break and how will I replace it if it does.

The Vinrella umbrella (you can get it in water bottle or wine bottle holders) retails for $20 and comes in a variety of colors and patterns. Check them out here. They’ve already been featured in Cosmopolitan magazine, Family Circle and on the Today show with good reason- this is a cool idea, and saves your purse, cosmetics, extra gym shoes, etc from getting soaked even though you made it through the rain.

Good job!

1st weeks of July: the phone emergency, return to ordinary life, deliveries and prizes

The first week of July roared in and my lifted downshifted from the frenzy of the month before. However? there was a massive problem…

1stwkjuly1

My phone drowned in ice cream. Yes. I was bringing home stuff from the Caravan Stylist Studio event, and I had thrown two small tubs of ice cream that melted in my bag- planning to dispose of them on the way to the subway. Why? because the garbage cans at the studio were too small!

Anyway, I put everything in that LL Bean Everyday tote and forgot because I was talking to someone. I rode all the way home not thinking about it, thinking my phone and my camera were safely in my ParMana Designs bag. Got home, unpacked my tote, and then…found the drowned tech corpses. I’m still saddened and shocked by the whole thing. From living it up to completely DONE in one train ride.

1stwkjuly2

I actually did a blog post using pics from my Asus netbook! The camera is super janky and the res is so low, that’s almost worthless- but I had a job to do so whatever. Do or die, right? I actually like this selfie. I was trying to show off my Sinful Colors nailpolish in Sage Rose (which I got free from influenster.com in my SurfsUpVoxBox).

1stwkjuly3

This is the stuff that I had on deck to mess with the first week of July. There was my haul from Caravan, featuring MD Complete non-irritating pro peel and anti-aging eye wrinkle remover, plus two kinds of Fake Bake self-tanner. Then I got samples of youthglow and thirsty mud from Glam Glow Mud, Dove Oxygen Moisture shampoo and moisturizer from Pinch Me Box.

1stwkjuly4

Then out of the blue, with no effort on my part- I got an email offering me something. I THOUGHT I was just getting some free frames or something. Turns out that Glasses.com had just come up with their first exclusive collection called Kensington Road and they picked me to write about it! I thought that was cute, so I said yes. Next thing I new I got this huge package containing a box of tea from Harrods! I was like……huh? and  packet of chocolate covered digestive biscuits from McVities. um…what the what?

As I drank some Assam tea and munched the wickedly good biscuits, I read the press packet looking for clues. Well, the Kensington Road collection (which debuted on June 30th) was inspired by classic English frame styles. They actually sent a coupon for a free pair of glasses! Since I’m blind as a bat this was like manna dropping from heaven. We’ll talk more on this later.

1stwkjuly5

I was still moping about my phone and camera- but then I remembered that I had an old LG Romour phone hidden away somewhere, so that solved my imaging needs for awhile. I used it to photograph these cute Lisa Hoffman fragrance bracelets that a nice pr lady sent me. So cute! they sent a green jade bracelet with silver beads and a red jade bracelet with gold tone beads and 14k gold plated scent charm.

The charm holds the scent beads. The red came with Tunisian Neroli (a sort of spicy scent) and the green bracelet had French Clary Sage beads to put in it’s filigree sterling silver charm. I love them. They retail for $65, and I love the face that people with sensitive skin can wear scent safely because of the way that the fragrance is delivered. Really great gift.

1stwkjuly5a

1stwkjuly5b

I started on my (still upcoming) skincare/beauty roundup and got some more products delivered. I got a follow up package from Glo Science containing GLO antioxidant whitening toothpaste, GLO solo teeth whitening vials, and the Everday GLO teeth whitening maintenance pen. After you use the GLO Brilliant Teeth Whitening Device (you can read my review here) you still need to maintain your whitening results.

1stwkjuly6a

After all that rushing around, I realized that I had absolutely nothing to wear and I desperately needed to do the laundry. I had to overdress a little, but this pleated a-line spaghetti strapped sundress was $10 and it’s two years old. I wore my Lisa Hoffman fragrance bracelet in French Clary Sage, which is a fresh herbal fragrance. You can actually smell it as the bead filled charm warms up.

1stwkjuly6b

I got to use my Life is good Dockside Anchor Beach  tote for the first time. I mean it was just hauling laundry, but I did it stylishly and with optimism. As soon as I could I changed into a LOFT sweatehirt and my Cory Vines yoga pants and Catfootwear weavement sandals. Why? because I had to go grocery shopping…

1stwkjuly6c

This is all I had in the fridge. Some oranges, perfume, and my makeup case. Also nail polish.

1stwkjuly6d

I turned to that Everyday Tote again (I prefer to bring a bag and save a little tiny piece of the planet when shopping) and managed to get about $60 worth of stuff in it- including this lovely asparagus. Yes, that is King Arthur bread flour behind the asparagus. I bake a mean loaf and some pretty nice biscuits and crackers with that stuff!

1stwkjuly6e

I resolved to try and exercise with this Denise Austin book on Pilates. In case you can’t see the quote it says: ‘Never understimate your power to change and improve. You are a good person with wonderful qualities and you can reach your goals.’ How cool is that?

1stwkjuly6f

I made myself some food- this is the Meat, Egg, and Cheese Pancake that I created out of greed and ravenous hunger. It was good as hell. I also made my first cinnamon buns! They were absolutely delicious. I sold them at my Chubby Chubs table the next day to get them out of the house. I LOVE that I know how to make cinnamon buns. I feel like I really accomplished something. Here’s the recipe I use, from Domino Sugar

1stwkjuly7

I also managed to mail out some prize packages that had been sitting around the house. The prize packages from the Sniffapalooza/The Makeup Show blog giveaways and the twitter Life is good aw2014 NYC debut/First Anniversary giveaways. yes- I was that backed up.

1stwkjuly7a

Three year twitter follower Sean Salo (aka @Ebbhead) got the Life is good package which also featured some Chubby Chubs homemade 3 sugar caramel popcorn. yay, Sean!

tumblr_n8tuzjkamv1qi72kdo1_400

Lorie DelMundo got the First Anniversary/Life is Good/Influenster prize (female version) featuring Fake Bake, Zoya Carmen nail polish, and Sexy Hair Powder Play and Nikki Polous sexy retro 70s style silky strapless jumpsuit from Caravan Stylist Studio plus Hawaiian Tropic Silk Hydration After Sun Lotion and Not Your Mother’s Beach Babe Texturizing Shampoo and Conditioner from Influenster (came in that SurfsUpVoxBox free). She can carry all of it in her peachy Flower Dockside tote from Life is good.Yay for Lorie!

1stwkjuly9

While all of this happiness was going on, I was trying to get AT&T to send me a new phone. After contacting them on twitter, I found an address on the website for their Device Support center. I was going to get a replacement phone if it killed me.

Until next time!

Weekly Photo Challenge: Zig Zag (in Xilitla)

I was going to submit a fashion photo for the Weekly Photo Contest, but then I remembered that trip to Mexico… in 2008 I read a story about the sculpture garden, Las Pozas in Xilitla, Mexico. They said that the jungle was taking it over, and that it was falling into disrepair. Created by sculptor Edward James, it was a wonderland of twisting shapes, a thoroughly surrealist vision. My mission became clear- I HAD to go see it. I forced an ex-boyfriend into tagging along ( http://www.sheknows.com/living/articles/1023367/how-to-plan-a-safe-mexico-vacation) and I grabbed my Pentax K-1000, and went for it.

2872979930_68a81a8d52_b

No digital, all film- adventure! Even getting there was a zigzag- since I took a plane to Mexico City, then a plane to Tampico, then a bus to Xilitla, then a cab to Las Pozas

024600020246000302460005

I mean, Cancun? cabo? Nah. I went in September, which is the Off Season. There was no one around but the natives of the area. And it was stunningly, heartbreakingly beautiful 02490014bw02490024

I even did a travel issue of my online zine, theMAGAZINE(ok) just so that I could write and show off my photos of Las Pozas:

Never stick to the straight and narrow. Head left when everyone goes right, and you’ll see things that are wonderful.

the sassy flashback continues! second week of june, post photo shoot, life is good, caravan stylist studio

Ok, so AFTER all the photo shoot drama, I still had to run to Manhattan and return samples to S.I.L.K New York and Daisy Fuentes for Kohl’s. Turns out that I also had to attend the New York debut of lifestyle brand Life is good. They were sweet enough to send me an invitation (and, being me, I asked for bags for to style my my Coney Island shoot) and I was curious- who were they? And would there be food?

june231

I got to meet V.P. of Design & Product Development, Donna Tierney, while touring the temporary Life is good showroom at Home Studios. There were t-shirts, caps, sleepwear, beach bags, everything with a positive and optimistic message. The company donates 10% of it’s net profits to charities that benefit at risk youth, and they work hard to make Happy Hour a forever kind of thing. Just what I needed after a month of running around…

 june232

I got to see one of my fave people, Lorna from The Fabulous Report, who introduced me to Lola Mendez of Lividini & Co. Then I met Krista Robertson, the superblogger behind Covering the Bases. Krista is generous, too: she gave me the LL Bean Everyday tote that she’d just gotten while touring their showroom upstairs. Nice!

Another person that I got to meet was Life is good Co-Founder and Chief Executive optimist John Jacobs (who is a riot, honest). I’m not big on doing face to face interviews and stuff anymore. I get bored easily and interviews can be so much masturbation- but I enjoyed just talking to this guy who went off and founded a company with his brother, came up with a winning product based on well, happiness, and then went on to use his good fortune to help others. I guess you could say I’m a fan, now.

june233

To answer my question- yes, there was food. Such good food! The event was catered by Neuman’s Kitchen and the little finger bites added up to one of my favorite meals that week (and I’m a NY Cooking Examiner, so I know from good food, thanks).  I took this opportunity to enjoy the light breezes blowing through the studio, drink a few glasses of wine, and listen to The Easy Reasons play for us. Life is good? hell yeah, it was!

june234

Lots of cute people mingling, including Maria of City Laundry, who let me take a shot of her adorable shoes from Duo.

june235

Oh yeah- there was a goodie bag! I can’t wait to actually use that big beach towel… hoping to get to the beach before it gets cold. Last year, I ended up going on the last sunny day and I froze.

Anyway- in addition to the stuffed bag they handed me as I left the event- Life is good actually let me keep all 4 bags from the shoot. Including the canvas Adventure stowaway tote that I had gotten attached to. Sometimes, you win and then win again.

june236

So the next day- after finally getting some sleep- I got up, got my baked goods together and hit the street. Yes- I took my bags with me, ok? What good is free stuff if you don’t use it? I also wore my Life is good chill cap. I admit to being that chick who would dress up in her Christmas and Birthday clothes the next day as well. Judge all you want.

june237

It was back to rain, of course- so I sat at the bus stop until the sun came out. This was my forst day with homemade cinnamon buns! I did ok with  those, too.  Wearing? My Hechizo necklace, Mossimo plaid shirt, BDG t-shirt, guess jeans, cat Footwear Corinne boots, NY Cares windbreaker.

I made that sign… Just sayin.

june238

The next day was a bright sunny Saturday and I threw on whatever was clean to try and update my blog. Gap tshirt, Urban Outfitters silky floral trousers, Cat Footwear weavement sandals, Hechizo necklace. At my feet? Wishful thinking- of course I wasn’t going to get to wear that bikini and lay out on that beach towel! I had to write! I think I also had other events to write up for my NY Fashion and Trends Examiner column, so I was kinda stressed.

I ended up being going to McDonald’s to get an iced coffee, stayed there for the free wi-fi, but attracted a talkative old man who combatively told me about his amazing photography career and pressed an old, battered film camera into my hands. I didn’t get my work done, because I couldn’t pug in there- so basically I wasted my afternoon.

 june239

When I got home, I had a little pork chop marinating in the fridge, so I roasted it with some cute little mini-peppers. I ate half and packed the rest for lunch the next day…

june2391

Sunday I got up and tried to get presentable. I had decided to add flavored popcorn to my menu, and I had a spicy paprika/crushed red pepper, sea salt mix and toffee flavor. Couldn’t hurt, right?  june2392

I jumped into a shift dress and white shirt, and strapped on my new Guyana bracelet. It was a nice hot day, lots of sun- I wanted to make a good impression.

june2393

I had my lunch, a nice cold beverage and I was ready to hang out and see if anyone bought anything. It was me and the bookseller down the bench just chilling at the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens. After I was done, I spent on of my hard earned dollars on an italian ice from a street vendor. Supportt small business, right?

june2394 june2395

Basically- more of the same. I am determined to do this all summer, trying out new recipes, meeting my neighbors, and strengthening my selling skills. A;lso, my cinnamon bun icing skills- since I had one that was really just drowned in icing. But guess what? I learned how to make icing!

june2395a

The next week, it was all about getting over to the Caravan Stylist Studio for my First Anniversary visit and Chubby Chubs soft launch.   I’d never been there,so it was a big deal. I also wanted to see if anyone liked my stuff, to be honest.

 june2396june2397

The Carlton Hotel was spectacular. I love the decor, really jazzy and luxurious. I’d love to have a staycation there. Well, today was kind of a working staycation since I was going to get my nails done, get my makeup refreshed, and generally enjoy life while plying people with goodies.

june2398

I never get tired of this: my little bags of flavored popcorn and my cookie goodie boxes. I got to taste the Belvoir Fruit Farms Elderflower Lemonade presse. Yum. And I got fell in love with this Le Sportsac pouch. I now use it to stash my Chubby Chubs money in, so that worked out.

See that phone? Take a good look… I have a great story about that phone coming up next update.

june2399 june23991 june23992 june23993

It was really like a birthday party. Guests included Tania Jen of Style by Tania, Former Miss New Jersey Grace Gold, Jaclyn Ling of Just Blynk, Christina of Adventures in Polishland, Bevs Lim Lee New York Beauty Examiner, and Janine Just of Janine Just Inc. Not pictured- Brooke Meuller and Kristin Shane of KKS Communications, Glasgow Skinner of My Life On and Off the Guestlist, and handbag designer Nancy Osborne of Jack Blue Studios. It was a cool day.

Let’s look at my pretty Chubby Chubs table display again!

june23994

After this? I took a week off… Little did I know that it was the last time that I’d ever see my trusted point and shoot and smartphone in operational mode.

I’ll tell you later.

the first week of june! progress! starting a business, planning a shoot, deliveries… sassy’s summer starts for real.

So, yes- it’s July and things are chugging along nicely. However, the blog is back on the first week of June! Like tv re-runs, only a blog and it’s me.

let’s go back… back to before the Coney Island blogger shoot, back before the First Anniversary party, back in time to…the Sassy Zone! (ok, lame joke. forget it).

Onward!

1. delivery6

This was my house during the first week of June. After I got the delivery of SILK New York clothing too late for my Apneet Kaur shoot, I plotted how to get a bunch of bloggers and shoot the clothes on them. That grew into requests for more  clothes, accessories, footwear, etc. I got deliveries from ParMana Designs, Hechizo, and Desigual. Also a slew of beachy bags from lifestyle retailer Life is good… I love PR people. Without them? I’m nothing. NOTHING.

2. delivery4

I started messing with everything right away, playing with the bags to see which would go with what swimsuits, mentally matching bloggers to accessories… Here you can see the canvas Adventure Stowaway tote, Feelin Beachy ropehandled mini-tote, Palm Tree and Anchor dockside beach bags from Life is good (I love them, they donate 10% of their net profits to help at-risk kids. That’s awesome!). Along with the emerald green and black Dream Awake shoulder bag from ParMana Designs, I played with the Aztec Stripe crochet bikini from Anna Kosturova, the Mika high wasted bikini bottom from WET swimwear with matching Miranda convertible top (halter to bandeau), and the Leila athletic top and matching Anuhea bottom from Cami and Jax.

3. delivery5

The styling corner was getting scary, but I was too busy to really get excited. I still had more stuff to pick up…

4. pickup

I was paranoid about scheduling a Daisy Fuentes for Kohl’s delivery, so I went out and picked up my pulls myself. Ran into Manhattan (ok, I took the subway, but you know what I mean) and dragged home my spoils. Standouts for me were the chevron striped blue maxi dress, This amazingly bright raspberry colored striped burnout tshirt, and the alternating striped cream dress with pockets. I love this dress, actually. I wanted to keep it for myself!

5. swimtartewalk1

I still had to pick up swimwear from a company called Swimtarte, and I was excited because they were a new brand that I found on my own. They are located in a Brooklyn neighborhood near mine, so I decided to set out for a soothing walk. I live in a mostly residential area, so there are flowering plants and shady trees, and I make sure to walk down the prettiest blocks when I have a long stroll like this one.

6. swimtartewalk3

I made sure to walk down Atlantic Avenue in Boerum Hill, lined with upscale boutiques for the fashion conscious. Check out Michelle New York, Girlcat, and Bijoutique– the clothing is gorgeously chic, and you can find unique jewelry and accessories.

7. swimtartewalk2

I never found Swimtarte… also, I got lost and ended up walking for 4 hours- way longer than I intended. I emailed them to ask if they could possibly drop the suits off at my place, but they said they were too busy. So I ended up not working with them.

chubbychubs1

So, in addition to plotting my first multi-blogger shoot and First Anniversary celebration? I was planning the launch of a lady business to keep me occupied and generate hands-on revenue.

chubbychubs2

Ever since I gave up fast food and junk food and pretty much any pre-made foods, I have been baking like mad. I can’t just buy a slice of cake, I have to make a whole one if I get a craving. i can’t go buy cookies, so I mix up the dough and end up with enough for three dozen. Best way to stay sample sized (just in case any companies have stuff to give away- you want to be a standard size, just FYI) I had to start getting rid of my excess sweets. I gave some away, but that’s not as satisfying as selling them to strangers for cash money.

chubbychubs3

So in the middle of emailing and texting with bloggers, and emailing with PR companies, and getting deliveries, and fetching samples I was baking and buying supplies for my little business. The day that I planned to start? It rained! But I did it anyway.

chubbychubs4

I wore my rain slicker from NY Cares and my Corinne boots from Cat Footwear (no blog post is complete until I mention them, lol!) and went for it. When the rain got too heavy, I sat in the bus shelter. It wasn’t just stubbornness that made me do it. I had decided that I needed a non-fashion hobby, something that I did on my own just for me. This was my chance, and rain wasn’t going to stop me.

chubbychubs5

Also, I made money! These are the first dollars that I earned for my cookies and pound blueberry pound cake. I’m really proud. I made something and I sold it and people said it was good. That rocked.

chubbychubs6

the next day the sun was shining and I was right back out on the corner with my table. And some iced coffe with Califia Farms almond milk. And my Chuck-Chuck bracelet for luck.

chubbychubs7

The last day before my shoot, I spent selling at Target First Saturday at the Brooklyn Museum. I went retro, hoping to impress new customers with my pink thrift store dress and Giverny floral painted hat. I defined my waist with a black leather belt from Ann Taylor and showed off my Fire Rose toenails in weavement sandals. I sold one bag of popcorn, but I had a nice time watching people and just enjoyed the summer breeze while I could.

shoot1

shoot2

The next day I packed up all the stuff for my first day of shooting, and made treats for the girls. Now + Zen pr had given me bottles of Desigual perfume, so I actually had a goodie bag to giveaway to say ‘thank you’ to the bloggers for showing up. I think that niceness counts, even if people take that for granted.

shoot3

I didn’t want to get ‘fancy’ since I would be dragging a suitcase, and running all over the place. I wore my tattered light wash guess jeans, my (now cropped) Earthmover tshirt, a denim shirt, Desigual Fun perfume (why not!) and the Giverny floral painted hat from primadonna- since I was afraid to put it in the suitcase. I threw on two Desigual necklaces that had come with my Aume dress and Uno jacket from an earlier shoot with blogger Amy Vosejpka of Not Official. I had decided that all I wanted in life was this canvas Adventure Stowaway tote from Life is good. It has all these pockets and compartments, and I adored the grey/olive/orange color combination.

shoot6

This is me… on the train, exhausted- but ready.

next up? Behind the scenes of my two day four blogger shoot at Coney Island! #staytuned!

remember may? good- because we’re going back in time…

You know how TV shows go on hiatus and you have to live on re-runs, or binge watch on netflix? I took a little vacay after the stress filled anniversary month and blogger shoot and am just now recovering. As a result, we are going to relive some magic moment from way back when…before we were so rudely interrupted.

Allons-y! (that’s let’s Go in French, ok?)

1. fakejobinterview

This ie me heading off to one of those fake job interviews that creatves are always getting suckered into. I wore my fave animal print cardi, Ann Taylor linen shirt, and a black silk knife pleated skirt- yes, those are my weavement sandals from Cat Footwear, and I’m wearing Illamasqua’s Marquise shattered star glitter nail varnish on my toesies. The best part of this ‘interview’ (a job requiring me to supply content to an unnamed website -they asked me, not the other way around- for some lunatic who verbally abused me and then revealed that he had no money. NO THANK YOU. ) was passing this super cute lingerie shop, Bradelis. I want to go to there…1. slknewyorkdelivery 1a. playingwithsamples

I finally got the shipment of S.I.L.K. New York clothing that was meant for Apneet Kaur’s interview/shoot for my NY Fashion Blogger Project. There was no way to re-schedule, and this is when the massive Coney Island idea was born. I had the clothes, why waste the opportunity? AND I wanted to do something memorable for my First Year Anniversary. Little did I know that I would end up nearly having a nervous breakdown dealing with these people- but whatever. You can see Summer Must Haves Part 3 here. And rest assured- there WILL be a behind-the-scenes breakdown of alllllllllll the drama soon.

Anyway- I also got to try on the clothes.  I had a lot of fun stayling imaginary outfits for my Summer Must Haves Part 1 & Part 2, since I also had that big box of swimwear and accessories. I literally spent Memorial Day weekend laying out the whole thing. It was like playing dolls… I LOVE styling! Cuz I’m so good at it, lol! 2. grungecute

The next time the library was open, I decided to grunge it up and head out. I wore my fave silky floral trousers, my zosias from Cat Footwear, my cropped earthmover tshirt from that Cat Footwear event (that’s me- if I like something, I wear it forever), and my clothing swap cardi. I had washed and moisturized my hair and just braided it up under my fave scarf. Simple, easy, gone.3. grungecute2

For a no makeup, makeup look I opted for Perfekt Skin Perfecting Concealer in Decadent under my eyes, just enough to erase my underye puffs. I used my fave H.I.P gold shadow (so old, seriously), and the new Makeup Forever Aquamatics waterproof glide-on eyshadow pencil in S60 that I got in The Makeup Show goodie bag. Rimmel London Scandaleyes mascara (free from influenster) on upper lashes and Bobbi Brown Everything mascara on lower lashes and eyebrows. Jurlique Love Balm was on lips, and then I added Illamasqua Lily Rose sheer lip gloss for a little color.  Just to be crazy, I put a few drops of Tom Ford’s Black Orchid on my wrists. I regretted that later when I attracted an extremely talkative homeless man at the library. C’est la vie, right?4. prospectprkbeauty1I walked through Prospect Park on the way to the Grand Army Plaza library, wandering off the beaten path and being surprised with how much beauty is just lying there for all to see. It was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux and built in the 1860s… It leaves Central Park in the dust, mostly beacsue it’s not tramplesd constantly by hordes of people. As I walked, I was seeing rolling hills, beautiful hidden bridges, fountains that reminded me of Rivendell.. and lots of loveley Beaux Arts touches in the parks architecture.

5. prospectprkbeauty

See? No one around, and this was on the type of afternoon that sees Central Park glutted with bodies.  So goregous! Brooklyn is the best place to live these days.6. luckysummertrendspress

A fun moment on Lucky’s contributor forum where I got to shout out my love for crochet swimwear company Anna Kosturova. I don’t know, it just felt nice to be acknowledged. 7. saturday1 8. saturday2

Another day, another outfit. This time I just did my fave BDG tshirt with my 80s grafitti jeans and bangles. It was hot, and I was going walking again.  The skin thing was all about Jurlique’s Soothing Foaming Cleanser, Fresh Lotus Youth Preserve Radiance Lotion, and Bobbi Brown Everything mascara. Also, the lip balm that designer Gabriel Arruda gave me at ENK Coterie. I was hitting the self tanner then, too- The St. Tropez Gradual Tan Moisturizer. I kept things light with Antica Farmacista’s Orange, Lilac, and Jasmine perfume. 9. illamasquabeautyschooldropin 6114The month of June started with an invite, but I had so much work to do that I missed it! Illamasqua, one of my fave beauty brands, was hosting a fun demo on Channeling your inner bombshell, with the perfect smokey eye- devised by Alex Box, their Creative Director. I’m adoring the new Matte Lip Liquid. The new colors are Exotic, Forbidden, and Surrender and you can see the whole summer 2014 collection here.

Next time? We go behind the camera and relive the Coney Island Blogger Shoot (also known as the first week of June)! Stay tuned…
