The Shopping Trip

I know I’ve been gone for a minute. The whole javascript pre-bootcamp bootcamp had me in an isolation tailspin. I had to re-learn going outside, talking to people about things other than coding and dealing with the fact that not going to the gym for three weeks straight has me eligible for fat camp.

But life goes on, and things keep happening so here I am again.

I am this awesome. My Closet Cleanse ootd with handpainted Old Navy hi-tops.

I follow celebrity stylist June Ambrose (if you don’t know who she is, she is the genius behind Missy Elliott’s groundbreaking looks in videos like The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)so she is actually iconic, for real with facts to back that up). She advertised her annual Closet Cleanse sale on instagram, happening at Selima Optique (she has a collab with them selling big, fabulous frames. I got excited, then looked at my credit card balance and deflated, but at the end of the day I got dressed and went.

I wore my Duryea’s t-shirt from Montauk Mainstay, DKNY super soft yoga culottes , my big ass Zeelol frames over the Polar Grey ttdeye contacts (I like making people question whether my eyes or glasses are fake. ) and the Old Navy sneakers that I made into wearable art. A very special summertime outfit- plus my new wig, which we’ll talk about later. See above collage.

June Ambrose’s Closet Cleanse event at Selima Optique, Aug 17th.

I was late because I had convinced myself that it would be super crowded with awful women fighting and snatching and being fashion crazy. It reminded me of when I was a kid and my mom would force me to go outside. I had to be my own mom and motivate myself to leave the house and interact with other humans while possibly getting some bargains. It was real.

Once I got there, it was kind of mellow. The power shoppers had been and gone with a lull for lunch that I stepped into. The racks were scattered throughout the front of the store. Bins with $10 items were on the floor and there were piles of merch on the counters. It was heaven for thrifters.

Display cases were full of opulent accessories. Hermes, Maison Martin Margiela, and more.

The sale started at 11 am and I got there around two, so I missed a lot, but there were still great items everywhere. I saw Chanel, Givenchy, Marc Jacobs, and labels that I had never heard of. Between my budget and the fact that I’ve been shopping for months (both for me and for inventory) I might have gone crazy.

I got three things, and while I was standing on line June Ambrose came up, looked at my stuff and gave me an additional discount on this Margaret M. pencil skirt. I am not good at dealing with celebrities, so I don’t have a selfie with her, I didn’t take photos of her, and I didn’t want to be all up her butt so I didn’t even really start a conversation with her. I figured that everyone who came to the sale knew she was famous because how else did you know about the sale? It was nice of her to give me a discount, though. Customer service is customer service no matter who gives it to you, so 5 stars on the customer service!

I spent the money I saved at June’s daughter’s table outside. Summer Hope Chamblin, who is prominently featured on her mom’s instafeed, was out on the street in front of the boutique selling watermelon lemonade and various baked goods. She kind of made me buy this chocolate chip cookie (I’m not a fan) which I ended up liking, and I got two oatmeal raisin cookies to eat with my Dean and Deluca honey vanilla latte. Anytime I go out to Soho, especially if there’s shopping involved, I have to stop in there for a treat.

Turned out to be an ok Saturday afternoon!

Do you ever have a hard time leaving the house to do things? Does it sometimes feel too hard to face the world of people lurking outside? What is the one thing that can tip you out of bed and out the door? Talk amongst yourselves.

See you next time!

The Glasses

Alberta and Brayden, my new glasses from Zeelol.

I’ve been wearing glasses since I was 12 thanks to reading under the covers when I was supposed to be sleeping. My mom has 20/20 vision. Unfairness! Anyway, I’ve never had more than one pair of glasses until recently. I thought it was time to start a glasses wardrobe, like a real grownup. It seems like the adult thing to do, instead of having to freak out if I can’t find my glasses or worrying that I might break them and be blind.

I saw an ad for these on some website and found out that you can get crazy, badass fashion glass for the price of a good meal or two bottles of decent pinot. Not only that, they allow you to upload your prescription quickly and easily. AND my glasses were ready almost instantaneously. Amazing. And they shipped immediately. And they showed up on my doorstep a week later. The easy, get it instantly 2019 life is working for me. And having these cute eyeglass cases, and a teeny two headed screwdriver. For $80!

I suck at taking selfies these days but I had to see how I looked immediately. After applying some eyeshadow (because glasses magnify your eyes) and lipstick, and of course earrings… I was going to do outfits, too, but I was too excited. The huge Alberta frames are super dramatic in black with tortoiseshell at the bottom. The oversized brow means that I won’t have to paint mine in, so instant win. I love them. They’re so Oprah!

I chose the Brayden frames because I’ve always been fascinated by cateye frames, but I always get rectangular or square. Instead of rhinestones, these have punk rock conical studs. I was intimidated by the size at first, but the frames are so lightweight I didn’t want to take them off. Both offer me crystal clear, perfect, sharp vision and the larger size gives me more range of vision, I think. I’m definite;y looking at sunglasses. I have never in my life had prescription sunglasses. The luxury!

Check out the affordable frames and sunglasses at www.zeelol.com. Buy a new outfit with the money you save.

See you next time!

in which we go over some NYE 2016 prep

This is it! We made it through one more year, and now have to get ready to sweep it away and make a clean slate for 2016. Whether you’re going out on the town or staying in, a new year is an opportunity to get ready for.

And an excuse to drink prosecco.

Here are my tips for getting through NYE with style:

prep 1I got some late deliveries that just missed the Holiday Gift Guide but are right on time for getting NYE cute.

  1. Cake Beauty sent over be Delectable strawberry & cream Decadent Hair & Body Mist, and a tube of vanilla & cream Supremely Rich Body Wash Both are $10 and a sweet way to scent your NYE look.
  2. Lucky, lucky me to get a box of fragrant goodies from Thymes! I can honestly say that I’m dying over the Kimono Rose rollerball ($19). It’s the type of fragrance that will have him hovering around all night. Pretty, soft, feminine and long lasting. I’m also enthused over the Aqua Coraline Body Wash ($21), a fresh scent with notes of cyclamen, yuzu, and Hinoki wood. And the scent of the Tupelo Lemongrass Body Lotion ($25) is as intoxicating as the luxurious lotions effect on your skin.

prep 3Love these colors from CND Vinylux. Sexy, sassy and fun.  Reds in Hollywood and Tartan Punk, a metallic Peacock Plume blue or go full on metallic with smokey Grommet or shimmery Silver Chrome are on trend for end of the year nail looks. Just make sure you put a topcoat on, though, to get mileage out of your manicure.

prep 2Experiment with your makeup. It’s NYE, take a chance on something different, whether it’s false eyelashes, a winged eye, or funky lipstick. Or, conversely if you always pile it on…try a no makeup makeup look. Make those instagrams count for the new you in the new year.

prep 4A mini dress trumps everything. Ask that basketball player that got robbed. The gold brocade cocktail mini with back cutout is a retro riff on the party dress. The maroon and white damask print halter dress has a blingy self belt that defines your waist, the contrasting seaming outlines your curves, and the hemline stays put through walking and dancing. This black, long-sleeved body con dress with gold print is deceptively modest ( and inspired by Kim K.  Show a little skin or a lot, but legs for days is a great look, and a dress takes two seconds to slip on. Keep it simple,  ladies!

Shoes? No matter the heel height or thickness, just make sure they pop. I adore these studded booties, the stacked heel is super comfy and the wine color is perfect. These gold and caramel leather Enzo Angiolini ankle strap pumps. The grey faux suede stilettos? I can’t lie, wore them once and the pain was so worth the enhanced height and the feeling of sexy swagger. Just make sure you have some place t perch and twirl your ankle…

prep 5I am suggesting a fur, wherever you can find one. It got this one at the thrift store for $15. I knew it was meant for me, because I actually ran out of cash, had to run home, didn’t get back til the next morning and it was STILL THERE. And I can wear it with jeans or with a dress. And it’s actually warm. And did I mention furs are in?

20151224_125451Stay home and make these Red Pepper Popcorn Scallop treats. I found packets of tiny scallops at the store and came up with this way of serving them. Rinse and dry the scallops. Mix flour, red pepper flakes, sea salt and pepper together in a bowl and set aside. NOW. Pour enough vegetable oil into a skillet to cover the bottom and create an oily lake. Heat until a piece of bread dropped in turns brown.

Now roll the scallops in the flour until the flour and spices adhere in a more or less even coating. Carefully add the scallops to the hot oil and agitate the pan as they brown. It doesn’t’t take long, so you don’t want to walk away from the pan. Remove the scallops from the oil with a slotted spoon and place in a parchment lined ramekin serving dish and squeeze lemon juice over them. Serve with prosecco while flirting outrageously.

stay homeBuy a Feya candle to give back to others who don’t have it as lucky as you and make sure you light it before 12. Smile because by buying that candle you feed a fellow human being. Cool, right?

Happy New Year’s Eve, no matter how loudly or quietly you decide to ring it in.

NYFW: in which we go see Daniel Silverstain’s ss2016 show and attend NOLCHA Fashion Lounge

Daniel Silverstain:silverstain ootdIt was hot and humid. I wore this because I wanted to. I added the $10 straw fedora later, but it still counts. That’s my birthday bag from REpurposing NOLA. I was still sweaty? But that shirt is so old it doesn’t matter. It’s so old it predates my blog. silverstain1   The back view. silverstain2My favorite look, because of the simplicity of the cut. the fabric is all the drama here. I also liked the yellow/white manicure with silver strip, because I could do that and probably will. silverstain3I LOVED the use of color. It felt very fun. The print was sort of Abstract Expressionist, sort of African. Silverstain kept it simple in a way. If you take that redbanded pleated skirt and wear it with a white tshirt and ballet slippers or converse, you will be beautifully dressed without having done anything other than slip on a skirt.

I loved the little ruffle on the bottom of the printed shift dress in photo 1. I’d wear the leggings with a hot strappy black chemise and killer stilletos (live the ones in the show, that weird too long strap, like a dog’s tongue). So disco era.silverstain4Metallics. Let’s talk. Last summer there were these knife pleated skirts everywhere that looked to be made out of gold leaf or tinfoil. If you bought one, just put that away and trot it out for ss2016, cuz it’s still relevant. Silverstain did a great, crazy spaceman leather jacket, but I wasn’t s fond of those culottes. However, that’s not to say they’re not workable or fabulous. I’m just saying I don’t feel them. silverstain iced psl

Afterwards I had to purge the fashion by having a PSL on ice at Sarbucks. So good. Although they have a new thing now. This was my first PSL ever, though.

Nolcha Fashion Lounge:nolcha 4

It was sort of a gloomy day and I had just seen the sargent exhibit and felt like this was the only thing that I wanted to wear in the world. Those white LL Bean Signature twill pants are perfect. Just so comfortable. the gold wingtips with mes insert are from Ami Clubwear, and they just add that right amount of sass. The take the dandy idea and slap it silly. nolcha 1  This jewelry by Raje was showstopping. I really liked the leather dickey, although I think the metal corners are too heavy and sharp. I loved the way that they draped these bib necklaces. Sexy! nolcha 2Interesting patterning from Charles & Ron on these dresses. I love the strong and unflinching use of the yellow/gold. Like, POW! Summer dress in your face! The short one appeals to me. It’s like a dashiki or something. Too cute and perfect for the beach. I liked their bags and leather belts. Nicely done, very rich looking. nolcha 3The home furnishings at Bo Concept where the Nolcha Fashion Lounge was located made me hungry to shop. So many cute little tchotchkes! A skateboarding gold bulldog? Wonderful.nolcha 5

I had another place to go and as I walked down 18th I found a MUJI! I LOVE MUJI! I went in and poked around, and bought a few highlighters and a pumice stone for fun. They had a ton, but it takes me forever to make choices so. I always have to think about it forever.

in which we take water aerobics and like it

swim1

So I decide it’s time to really and truly learn to swim and I register for the free classes available through NYC Parks. I registered for three pools, but got waitlisted for everything. At the last minute I ended up getting into a water aerobics class. Not what I wanted, but I took it.

swim2

Yes, this is me, paranoid person that I am, making sure that my strappy black one piece from Ami Clubwear not only fit, but was comfy for moving around in. I wanted to make sure that all bits and pieces stayed covered, and to make sure that I had lost enough weight not to embarrass myself.

Mission accomplished.

swim3

I’m lucky enough to live between two malls with Target stores, and it also turns out that both malls have a Modell’s across the street. I was able to quickly get the flip flops ($3.99 at Target) and latex swim cap ($2.99 at Modell’s) that I needed for class. Along with my Perrier x Dusen Dusen towel, I was set.

swim4

Inspired by an old issue of The Daily Front Row, I gave myself a quick manicure with Peacock Plume CND Vinylux Weekly polish ($10.50) layered with glittery Titchy from butter London and sealed with Probelle Beauty Topcoat Sealer.

swim6

It was late afternoon when I got to the pool. The place was crowded with kids streaming out of the building with wet hair and towels flung around their shoulders like capes. I have never been a pool person like that, so it was all new to me. I packed a bag and made sure I had a snack to either console myself for doing badly or to congratulate myself for doing well.

swim7Once everyone had cleared out of the building, my class trooped in and got changed. At first I wasn’t sure that my over-sized lock tote would even fit, but I managed to squeeze everything in. Check it out- me as a latex capped Olympic swimmer!

Even though I can’t swim…

swim8The first class went ok- it was just exercising and jogging under water in the shallow end of the pool. The next day, I threw on my floral retro two piece and some overalls and headed back. I wasn’t as nervous about who else was going to be there or if people were going to judge me by my suit, bag or clothes so I just threw on my Supra footwear Cuttler sneakers from last year and put everything in that tote bag that I got at the DenTek party. Done.

swim9

I had my Tommy Bahama towel from that party, the flip flops, and I made sure to pack my Tata Harper Beautifying Face Oil ($48) and Irridescent Revitalizing Body Oil (limited edition) and rosebud lip balm for after being in the pool. After an hour of underwater jogging, stretching, leg lifts and arm exercises it was a joy to come out into the warm summer night.  swim91

My living room floor, where swim stuff has replaced running gear until summer ends… I love the fact that my apartment has that chlorine scent and that all my stuff is getting used the way they were intended, not just for styling.
swim92
Last night after a day or running up and down, I hurriedly switched into my black swimsuit, then threw on some jorts and a blue chambray blouse from Southern Tide ($89) with my usual sandals. The class ends this week, and now that I’m comfortable in the water I can’t wait to sign up for swimming classes.
swim93
There’s also the fact that the pool is right near Ikea… which reminds me that with fall coming, I still have projects around the house to work on.

baking, business, cookies, cooking, entrepeneurship, shopping

in which I have my first Etsy cookie orders and realize how much it cost to ship to CA

cookies 1

I rebooted my Etsy shop a few months ago after baking like crazy all Christmas season and finally got some orders last month! Which meant that I had to bake the cookies. Oh, and then I realized that I was out of packing supplies. Um, how much is postage?

cookies3a

Well, first things first- they ordered cookies, so I had to actually manufacture them. Each order had a different add-inn, so there was calculating my ingredients and making sure that I had the right number of cookies per canister. Then I realized that I had no canisters, so that meant a run to the restaurant supply store, where they had no lids. Luckily the look includes wrapping the canister in a plastic treat bag, so while I was annoyed it wasn’t a showstopper. cookies2a  I love the idea of brown paper packages (I leave off the string) and I also love the idea of a birthday party in a box. So once I had canisters and cookies, it was about laying out the ribbon, gathering fun little toys and writing out the pretty labels.

Did I mention realizing that I had run out of brown paper? cookies4

I had given myself a 5 day lead time for delivering orders and even with all the frantic last-minute shopping, managed to get everything out on time. The worst part was finding out that shipping to California was twice the cost of shipping within the East Coast, which I was not aware of.

So now I know.

in which we go out and deliver cookies, do some windowshopping and shoot a little streetstyle

This is one of those looooong posts, but by the end we’ll be totally caught up and ready for anything.

May 10th:

may101

I had some events in the city (as some of us call the isle of Manhattan) and I was going to maximize my carfare by using my time to also give away cookies to nice people who have given me invitations or stuff to write about. I had this amazing Aloha powder supplement to add to my smoothies (last packet, sniff!) along with chunks of fresh ginger and carrot, strawberries, half a beet, peanut butter and fresh squeezed grapefruit juice. That was a good smoothie.

may102

Went for my walk in the park wearing my fave Citizen Ciao t-shirt over my long sleeved Uniqlo shirt with leggings and my old Cat Footwear sandals from last summer.

may103

I washed up and baked some cookies, like 4 or 5 dozen, then got them packaged and stuck a business card on the side. Ready!!

may103a

Ok, well- I got dressed first. may104

have I ever explained how much I love the Columbus Circle stop? It has never changed, and every time I see that big globe I get a little teary-eyed.  may105

Central Park- lush foliage, street vendors, horses dressed in costumes. may106

NY Fashion, behind the scenes! may107

I went to my event and then walked around for awhile since I was done dropping stuff off. Ate this sandwich they gave me at the press preview, looked at tall buildings. I’m such a tourist when I go into Manhattan!

 Windowshopping & Concrete Runway:may108

So every trip into Manhattan is a chance to get caught up on what’s hot and happening in NYC. I adore and worship this carryall that I saw in teh window of Henri Bendel’s. This Topshop window showcased an Asian theme, smart since they got Topshop on the Met Gala Red Carpet.  may109

This was cool- my walk took me from India to a window featuring Bigfoot. sad because I used to have a Polaroid Land Camera and dropped it one day on a tile floor right before a photoshoot. may1091

Club Monaco‘s pretty, minimalist frill white dress, and some madness from Opening Ceremony that caught my eye. So want that coat! may1092

Love these pretty, kitschy accessories. None of this stuff is expensive. That’s the trick of New York- necessities are super expensive, but you can get gewgaws like this for cheap. may1093

So New York. may1094

Loved this knock-off fashion display. there are tons of little stores all over the place that have adorable merch. Why people rely on running into chain-store fast fashion is beyond me. But, whatever. may1095

It’s funny how you can get all Bill Cunningham and start seeing trends and coincidences. I spotted the first black and white outfit at the press preview, and the monochrome trend kept popping up. Ending in the third image where EVERYONE was wearing it. may1096

Leopard print shoes and sneakers.

may1097

Just three outfits I liked. I so loved the pregnant badass in lace and denim- I chased her down, actually. Her boots are perfection. Congrats, little mama!

May 14:

2may141

Getting ready to head into town!!! I liked the ease of this Daisy Fuentes dress from last summer, it went perfectly with my Cat Footwear Squander boots and my REpurposing NOLA custom made boho chic handbag (thank you so much Traci!). 2may142

This time out, certain people who have gone above and beyond got brownie bites AND cookies. Today I was feeling ribbony, trying to use up the last of the ribbon that I bought at Easter for my Birthday Month projects.

2may143

I know I look a little sad in this shot? But I’m really trying to show off my Sumptuous Olive MAC eyeshadow and Makeup Forever Ink Liner– done in three minutes. I also added my Aries necklace from Shop Jacqueline Rose– my everyday necklace since I got it last month. I made sure to pack my 48 cent copy of Mill On The Floss- a classic that I found at Strand Bookstore. It’s tragic, but also illuminating. You should read it. 2may144

I dropped off treats then headed to one of my favorite places in NYC. Madison Square Park always has a challenging outdoor installation going on. This on is called Fata Morgana and it’s up until winter.2may145

And then ran into the Almay beauty team who were having a #SimplyAmerican cookout right there in the street. Hot dogs and pretzels, free makeovers, and a lipstick tower. You were supposed to guess how many. I was taking the photo when one woman asked me if I was going to guess. Before I could muzzle myself, I said ‘I don’t have that kind of time’ which was mean. But she also stepped right in front of me just as I raised my camera to shoot. two wrongs don’t make a right, but still. 2may146

This is the only streetsyle shot that I took that day. And the funny thing was that because the snake was so out there, I was going to not take the photo. However, I was walking down Broadway and this person walked next to me for so many blocks that I wondered if there was a divine effort to make me take this photo. So I took it and it was gorgeous.  2may147

Saw this cute Moschino phone case- or maybe it’s a knockoff. Just thought it was adorable. Also took a second to shoot a photo of the Samsung Gear Fit that I picked up (thanks, guys!) and the awesome goodie bag that I got from the Underhaus‘ Swimpop 15 swimwear pop-up. I was going to instagram the pics, but I was exhausted, so I just went home and took a nap. 2may148

Put my Samsung GearFit on as soon as I got home. LOVE it! We’ll be talking about that soon…

Then I jumped into my Swimpop 15 gift bag- of course, right? I mean- it’s me! I got coupons with discount codes from swimwear brands (see the blog post for that info), baked bean crisps from Enlightened, a Skinny Girl beverage, Coco Nutz Pina Colada malt beverage (serious kick for 8% alcohol!) and a My Cabana Boy gadget that helps you spray sunscreen or self-tanner on your back.

2may149

This is a cute little bag from Mia Marcelle that I decided to give the DIY treatment to. Stay tuned, I’ll finish it soon and then talk about it.

May 20th:

3may20

These trees don’t look like this anymore- but I still wanted to use the pics to talk about walking down this particular block.

3may201

Went to the restaurant supply store to get some tops and cookie canisters- and they were out. NOOOO! I also saw these squirt bottles, and I am keeping them in mind for making designs on cookies, like nice caramel squiggles and things. I went home and used my last few canisters, but only one had a lid. LUCKILY I had these sweet treat bags, so everything still looked pretty. Ran out of hangtags, though.

3may202

I didn’t dress up for my trip into the city, even though I had a press preview to attend, because I was scheduled to work out at Crunch Gym as part of my weight loss resolution thing. We’ll get to that soon. I was walking the streets of New York dropping off cookies wearing sweatoants and a modcloth tshirt, Southern Tide Summer cardigan, my RE purposing NOLA bag, and these Cuttler sneakers from SUPRA footwear. AND my SEB headwrap (flashback!). I did make sure to put on some lipstick, in a hot red from Makeup Forever, which was not a coincidence since I was dropping off cookies at their pr company.

3may203

After a day of running here and there, I finally made it back home to look at my new beauty goodies from Urban Beauty United (rose gold accented makeup brushes with frou frou pink bristles) and ALL the summer goodies from Makeup Forever from Equalizer primer to Aqua Matic eyeshadow pencils to Aqua Lips gloss- plus a new ProBronze Fusion compact that I can’t wait to use on my next shoot.

Ok, we are all caught up now… have a great Memorial Day!!!
