The New Skincare Routine

So after a few years of testing out products for Origins & Aveda (both owned by Estee Lauder, so really one thing), Tata Harper, Elizabeth Arden and a slew of companies that I’d never heard of and will prob never think about again, I ended up wanting to make my own skincare because I was paranoid about lab created skincare that has who knows what in it.

Now I’m always busy doing stuff and I just don’t feel like taking the time to gather everything and make body butter or scrubs. I know how, but I’m lazy. I’m also not really trained to make skincare and I gave myself a painful back rash once, which ended up in me getting cut at the dermatologist’s office. That slowed my roll to a full stop.

Ancient Cosmetics Even Skin face cream and Healthy Glow sugar scrub.

I discovered Ancient Cosmetics on instagram and after reading a lot of enthusiastic comments (kinda jealously, I never get that kind of attention on social media) and decided that these fangirling users must know something. The praise was rabid, fervent, enthusiastic…every word in the dictionary for ‘i love this stuff’. I went for the Even Skin hyperpigmentation face cream with turmeric and lemon essential oils ($15) because it addressed my concerns about crazy ingredients, and the price is reasonable. I wanted something that would moisturize without making me greasy and I got that. I wanted something to keep my skin from looking cloudy and blotchy, and this cream had my back. I liked it so much that when I ran out, I re-ordered.

The Healthy Glow turmeric and lemon body scrub ($12) was on sale the day that I re-ordered, so I grabbed that, too. I love the smell of lemons and body scrub will never go to waste in my place, so this was a no brainer. I was knocked out after my first shower with the scrub, because it softened my skin and left it feeling super hydrated. It worked on my feet, too, which was a bonus. The scrub is made of cane sugar, shea butter, avocado oil and frankincense in addition to the turmeric and lemon. So good.

Definitely worth the money, and you’re supporting a black owned small business. Also, they ship instantaneously. Both times I got my order so fast it was like they teleported it.

Check out their whole VEGAN skincare line, from scrubs to moisturizers to whole skincare sets, here.

See you next time!

beauty, beauty products, cooking, exercise, Fashion, food, running, skincare

in which we update our exercise progress, and lack of it

1fallex1So, I made that NYE resolution to exercise and lose weight and technically  I did it…for 8 months. From January to August I was good I worked my way up from doing exercises on my mat in doors to walking and then to some jogging. But then August came and I was thinner and I was happy and I just gave myself a vacay. Then I did water aerobics, and maybe that works for some but it slowed me down.

So after a summer of running, water aerobics, biking and sweating I was thinner, but by September 1st the weight was creeping back. I had lost 13 pounds altogether, and fit into cutoffs but the tummy pudge was slowly rearing it’s squashy head.

fallex1So it was back to the track, in the early fall mornings. At least the light was inspiring.

fallex4Back into the workout gear, this time favoring the cheap sweatpants and sneaker routine because running means sweat. I just want to out some stuff on, go to the park and do my thing. My cheap discount store sneakers have held up and become comfy old friends.

fallex3Actually? My goal next year is to exercise and style myself with stuff I designed. I have a whole online shop with unique images and graphics that I created. Pretty soon I’ll be zipping my Black Lady hoodie on over my Couch Potato tshirt and Stars leggings. Feel free to take a look around my store at www.society6.com/SassyEthncBohemian

fallex7I’m just as adamant about keeping up my beauty routine, which is just like working out. Your health is every part of you being cared for, and I am always up for that. I recently got some samples of Arm & Hammer Truly Radiant toothpaste and whitening booster. Instant verdict? leaves teeth sparkling clean, with tat lovely slick feeling like you just had a cleaning.

I also got some new stuff stay lean and moisturized. Nature’s Gate body washes in Mango and Pomegranate Sunflower body washes are gentle cleansers, great for people who may be showering more than once a day. Callex Exfoliating Ointment is a runnier’s dream. At first I was skeptical, but after just a week of slathering on the thick ointment, I saw a difference. Softer, and less dry skin buildup on the heels. Great to put on after bath, and throw on some thick slipper socks.

I use Tata Harper’s Beautifying Face Oil every time I go running. I wash and then put a few drops on my face. Then when I come home I wash again and re-apply with moisturizer. Since exercising is good for circulation, that and the moisturizing leave me looking dewy fresh.

I just had this Dead Sea Mud soap by Adovia sent over, and I’m really excited to try it over the winter. It’s supposed to detox and purify while cleansing, so that’s perfect for a shower after a sweaty workout or run. I admit, I m paranoid about getting pimples because of bacteria in sweat lingering on my skin. So I try to have as much cleaning material on hand as possible, as long as it’s gentle.

fallex5Energems was nice enough to send me a ox of each flavor to snack on f0r energy- much obliged! I just rotate the flavors. the clean, uplifting energy boost is the same whether you pick Dark Chocolate, Mont dark Chocolate or Berry Flavored Dark Chocolate. All three flavors carry the punch of a cup of coffee, the anti-oxidant properties of dark chocolate, and vitamins B and D. And check out my interview series in their Buzz section!

fallex8I try to remember to eat good food. I live in a neighborhood with so many grocery stores that you would have to really work to go hungry. AND a lot of places carry stuff like chia seeds, quinoa, cracked burger wheat and all kinds of fruits and spices so you never get bored. Great prices, too. I’m super lucky.

The middle photo was me making jerk chicken with creamy spinach mashed potatoes. I prepped a delicious glass of sparkling lambrusco with ice and lemon. That was the day I almost got internet. We’ll talk about that more later. The next bowl, was a kind of chilequilies thing I think. Eggs, with I think beans and rice and avaocado. I put the cherry tomatoes on top for color and flavor and sprinkled on chia seeds.

I like big bowls and I can not lie.

fallex9My other thing is wrapping stuff in parchment paper and roasting it. It works great with fish and veg. I am also sick in love with cauliflower. Cauliflower with salmon and watercress? No sweat. A little olive oil or butter and then squeeze a lemon wedge over this. Grind fresh pepper in there, add some tarragon maybe- ooh! or dill. So good.

Frozen pizza with cauliflower. It happened. It was delicious. Don’t be afraid to elevate ‘junk’ with veggies. Not like cheese doodles and broccoli, but a hamburger can use freshly sliced peppers and cilantro with mushrooms instead of cheese, right?

I didn’t want to be super skinny, but I did want to fit my clothes and lose inches from my flubbery places and that happened. My next goal is to create a leaner stronger body, so pray fr me. Winter is long and bring so that’s on my list of self-improvement projects so I can be reborn in the spring, all cue and a size 5/6 able to get away with a4 every so often.

in which we go over to the Glossier showroom in my new Le Grand hat and do nothing (there was a facial involved)

invite

Sometimes New York throws out these weird things that are super cool without even trying. I saw this little tidbit on twitter and decided that it was the perfect place to show off my Le Grande Hat on a sunny Friday afternoon. I mean, I had work to do, but still… it was time to get on a train and explore! glossier1

This is me on the train. I have worn those embroidered Kesh Beauty Hamsa bracelets to a frazzle, but I love them. Notice the tall hat? We’re gonna talk about it a little later…

glossier2

I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, but when you see a sandwich board inviting you to come get your nails done, it sounds like that’s the place you’re looking for. The display case with Glossier products kind of confirmed that. We’re here! And it was really close to the subway. Impossible to get lost, and that’s a blessing in New York.  glossier3

It was one of those places that it’s impossible not to like. there was an outdoor area, lots of pretty but weirdly cool plants, and hey- they like happiness. I mean, there was an actual sign. I’m addicted to happy these days, so when I go somewhere and find that it’s sanctioned and encouraged, I stay put.  glossier6

Check this out, people were, indeed, getting their nails done- so it wasn’t just an empty promise. Also, no one put any pressure on me to do it, so that made me even more comfortable. I just wanted to poke around and see what this Glossier thing was about. glossier5From what I could see, there was skin care as well as a lightly tinted moisturizer or BB cream. I’m skittish when it comes to trying new skin care brands, surprise!, so I kept looking and listening. I thought the sales people were pr ladies, and I gave one my card like I was at a blogger event. Mortified! She was nice about it though.

glossier7

I liked the decor, it reminded me of my apartment, to be honest. glossier4

I’m glad that bag was in a case, because I could see myself snatching it up. So pretty, that blush color pink! Not to mention fluffy, which is a thing this coming fall season. Glossier knows what’s up.  glossier92

I like these. I think I want plants like these in my house. This little pin seemed to be part of the free gift that they were giving the people who purchased things.   glossier93

there’s a sensory deprivation room, with soft music and crinkly foil walls. So Warhol! Which of course made me not relax. But then, I can’t relax anywhere, not even at yoga. I sat in the bean bag and listened to the music and watched the light on the walls changed and then I took a selfie and went back to the showroom. The Le Grande Hat looked divine, don’t you think? So Cat in the hat, but no stripes and if the cat was a Rastafarian. glossier8Then I decided that I would commit the 20 minutes for a free facial. The sweet sales girl explained the process (pick one and try it) and decided on the Mega Greens Galaxy Pack detoxifying mask ($22) because I hadn’t relaxed in the silver room, and also because by this point I trusted them. I cleaned my face with the wipes provided, and then slathered on some relaxation and went outside on the roof deck
glossier9
Finally… warm sun, face mask, sweating a little; it was like a sauna. Now I can tell you about the hat. Remember that time we went to the Brooklyn Museum and ran into the French Guy? Well, being nosy I ran and emailed him when I put up the blog link and set up an interview. These are his original design, and they are instantly eye-catching. Everywhere I went men asked where I had gotten my hat. Everywhere. A few tried it on. Le Grande Hat is a life changer accessory.
glossier91
I sat there in my hat letting my skin bake and I felt amazing. If you’re in New York, make sure you run over to the Glossier Showroom this Friday. The address is on the invite at the top of this post and it’s open to the public from 11am to 6pm. I heard 9/4 may be the last Friday. If you want to check out the products available go to Glossier.com.

in which we go to the Real Simple Lifestylers press preview for #RSBEAUTYBALANCE at the Andaz Hotel

Completely unexpected email invite of the year on deck!

It came quietly, with little fanfare. It was simple (Real Simple, lol!) and minimalist in design. It blew my whole head apart for the rest of the day and left me all nervous until the day came for me to attend. Someone actually invited me to a magazine event. This was like that time that someone gave me free sneakers- a whole next level situation.

Let’s all jump up and down squealing, ok?

rsbb1

Real Simple magazine’s site Real Simple Lifestylers  decided to have a pop-up at the Andaz Hotel on 41st Street and I was selected to attend the press-preview the day before. Selected guests were going to feel all the feels so we could tell those of you who missed it. I went to an afternoon of pampering for YOU, ok? Yes.

And I took lots of photos…

rsbb1a

When I registered for the event, I was sent straight to a link to start signing up for beauty services. I figured I should do everything so that I could give a fair assessment of the experience and the products used, not to mention how I felt about it all. This is a photo of the Aveda Hairstyling Studio, my first stop. rsbb2

I had actually decided to cut off about two inches of hair the day before, feeling that I had too many lengths going on uptop. I made sure to arrive with clean hair so that I could get the best results from my 30 minute appointment. Luckily for me, I got celebrity hair stylist Tippi Shorter (she has actually done Jennifer Hudson’s hair!!! ) and we had a blast working together.

rsbb3

Tippi asked me how I normally liked to wear my hair, and when I explained that I normally plait and then let it free to curl riotously, she knew exactly what to do. She parted my hair and did two strand twists after working in some Aveda phomollient styling foam, then applied heat via a 5-minute blow dry. After picking out the twists (she left one as an accent on the side) Tippi rubbed in Aveda dry remedy daily moisturizing oil, which left my hair soft and shiny. Even if your hair is natural, that doesn’t mean no maintenance. Products like these leave your strands moisturized and fragrant, always a good thing.

rsbb4

After leaving Tippi’s chair, I headed right over to the Aveda Chakra Balance station, where I had my cards read, and then was misted with the Chakra 3 balancing body mist and given a healing shoulder massage. This treatment catered to inviting a balance in power, motivation, intention and desire in my life.

rsbb7

Loving these gorgeous flower arrangements sprinkled throughout the light-filled treatment rooms…notto mention the copies of Real Simple magazine all over the place!

rsbb5

They weren’t ready for me at my next appointment, so I hung out in the lounge, which was absolutely gorgeous. Ceramic cups for tea, lots of tea bags and different sweeteners and lemon wedges awaited. There wasn’t any food, but there were these elegantly mismatched knives, so hope was alive that something good was coming later.

rsbb8

I started getting bored so I just wandered around taking photos with my Samsung S5 Active cameraphone until the were ready for me…   rsbb6a

Once they had an opening I headed over to the Laura Geller Mini-Makeover salon, where I chose to get a refresh on my lipstick.

rsbb8a

After that it was time to motorvate to my next appointment, A Pure Barre exercise class. I’ve been working on my weight loss resolution, but I exercise on my own. I was really nervous about taking a class, but also excited about learning new toning and fat burning tricks.

rsbb92

Loving this view from the second floor of the Andaz Hotel. yes- that’s the library where Big stood Carrie up.

rsbb9

I was super tired after getting up at 5am to bake cookies and deliver samples before the event, but with my new Aveda hairstyle, my chakras balanced, and my lips touched up by the Laura Geller team- I was ready to jump in there and do some working out. At least until I saw the pile of sweaty towels and the stuff on the yoga mats. Hello? I thought this was a photo op workout?

rsbb91 Um- not so much. Our instructor, Mish led us into a 45 minute whirl of moves that left me limp, sweaty, and profoundly grateful that I had started working out and walking before this class. And I STILL Had to rest. We used everything on the mat, worked every part of the body, and I think I would do the Pure Barre  again. I just need a second to rest and think about it.

rsbb93

I made a beeline back to the refreshment lounge and found all this. Hope rewarded!!! I put together some crusty bread slices with olive tapenade, goat cheese, and roasted peppers, loaded up on brie and crunchy pita slices then remembered something very very important:

rsbb95

Wine and Ghirardelli chocolate tasting on fleek!!!!  yes, I took a snack to sustain me on my long walk from the lounge to the kitchen. But this pic is so cool- port wine paired with Sea Salt Soiree was divine.

rsbb96

I so want to try this arrangement under glass. Simple and gorgeous oh hey, copies of Real Simple mag!

rsbb94

Once I got myself settled I had all this. Oh, I forgot to mention the SUJA juices that they handed us after the Pure Barre class. I at my self down, grabbed a copy of Real Simple and loafed for a few minutes- until I remembered that I had a skincare appointment with RoC scheduled. I drank all the wine before I got up and ran down the hall, though. I’m not completely insane.

rsbb97

I ran into the RoC Skincare Lab and was invited to lay down on a white leather divan, as I have always dreamed of doing, and enjoy myself. My skin was cleansed with RoC Daily Resurfacing Discs (a whole tub for $9.99! #bargain!) then she did a lot of stuff that I enjoyed throughly, like massaging my face and putting Deep Wrinkle serum on it. I can’t do eye cream for any reason, it gives me headaches- but RoC does have a good one.

rsbb98

I grabbed some more Ghiradelli chocoloate squares and another SUJA juice on my way out, said my thank yous, then ran across the street to hang out in front of the library and poke through my goodie bag.

Sit down, this is epic goodie bag stuffing.

rsbb99

Yes. This happened. Yogi Tea (gone, drank ’em up), Ghirardelli dark chocolate, the Suja Juice Solution Book, The Real Simple Guide To Life, cute You Are Loved stickers from Pink Olive, Aveda hand lotion, thickening tonic styling spray, and samples of their  smooth infusion straightening cream (get your free samples here). The also threw in a fun graph paper notepad, Laura Geller tropical blush-n-brighten compact, full-sized bottle of RoC Skincare Deep Wrinkle Serum (yaaaaassss!!!!), Real Simple 15th Anniversary issue, Pure Barre high-waisted 3-in-1 Gemini capris (invaluable, can’t stop wearing them), and a pack of Aloha Daily Good Greens superfood powders (i already used two of them making smoothies; get 20% off of our using the code  SAMAKOU)

rsbb991

I picked up Neutrogena naturals makeup remover wipes and this SUJA green juice after my Pure Barre class. I’ve already started cooking with the Ghirardelli Twilight Delight chocolate– I made an easy mole sauce by adding chopped chocolate and crushed red pepper flakes to a pot of roasting chicken breast (inspired by this Real Simple recipe)

rsbb992

Oh my! A ceramic bee hive with an Aspen Bay bamboo lotus scented candle inside #love. Speaking of love? Check out this heart shaped Konjac cleansing sponge from One Love Organics! I’m really looking forward to playing with it, followed by a moisturizing dose of RoC Skincare Deep Wrinkle serum.

*GIVEAWAY: If you’re interested, I’m giving away the Real Simple Beaute with a copy of the 15th Anniversary issue of Real Simple Magazine and a copy of The Real Simple Guide to Life (lots of good advice for people just starting out on their own). email me at sassyethnicbohemian@gmail.comwith one great thing that reading Real Simple has done for you.

NYFW recap: The Official Haul of the aw2015 season shows

So, yeah. Fashion Week happened, and I went some places and got some stuff handed to me free of charge. Did I say no? Um.

Let’s move on.

haul1

On Day 6, when I should have been slogging to 3 shows, I crashed and went through my stuff.  I didn’t go out that much, but I think I did ok. I mean, nobody’s handing out free magazines and stuff at the supermarket, right? So in that light…BONANAZA!!!

Clothing and clothing related items:

haul2

I believe that we have discussed the Tide Fashion Closet with stylist Jennifer Eve on hand to give out clothing mantenance advice? I managed to get one bag of Tide pods (with Febreze!) for every day that I was supposed to be at Lincoln Center. Why? Because chicks need detergent like they need egg sandwiches. I got this tshirt from Planet Zero Motorsports at the NOLCHA Fashion Lounge and this insane brightly patterned Winnie scarf from the incredible Desigual aw2015 show.

Beauty products:

haul3

I got a totebag from My Indie Hair at the Nolcha Fashion Lounge. They are all about social media, down to putting their handles on the inside rim of the bag. They were giving out hairspray, but that just gunks up my hair, so I traded that for their Polish #mixitsoft. I got some Bumble & bumble samples from Stylinity at TechStyle Lounge along with a new SK-II Facial Treatment Mask and a tiny bottle of Facial Treatment Essence. Pandora was giving away fashion emergency kits and free photos at Lincoln Center.

Tech stuff:

haul4

I got this cotton totebag (yes, another one… so original, right?) at TechStyle Lounge and filled it with new fun tech goodies. Like this most righteous UME Drive Millenium bracelet ($27.99) that I got straight from CEO Clem Harrigan’s pocket. What’s an UME Drive? It’s 8gig of wearable storage- waterproof and everything. No excuse for not having your presentation when you’re wearing it, right?

I also got a self help book called The Love List on a USB stick/keychain and the Stylinity Selfie Stage ($19.99) which is a clear plastic cradle for your smartphone with both adhesive and a suction cup on the back. Basically? Full length selfies just got so much easier.

 Food and Beverages:haul5

Bottles of Smartwater were all they had for free refreshment at Lincoln Center this (the last) season.   No more Diet Coke or Illy Coffee Drinks. No delicious Lifeway Kefir. Just water. I got four and am saving them for no real reason.

Got this All Beauty Water cucumber and aloe drink sweetened by Stevia at the NOLCHA Fashion Lounge. Definitely tasty. The Koa Olakino drink is so confusing that I just don’t really want to drink it. It’s supposed to be juice- but they tool all the color and sugar out so it tastes like water. I’ve had relationships like this, and it’s weird. Why would you make 12 fruits and vegetables taste like water?

SexyPop popcorn and Skinnygirl Sparklers from TechStyle Lounge– basically fake diet snack food. You can make popcorn fresh and customize it to your taste with far fewer additives and calories. The Skinnygirl Sparklers are basically soda and I admit that I guzzled them all because I never drink soda. I felt really bad afterwards because I could have used real fruit juice and a sparkling water to create my own low cal beverage and avoid the 10 calorie per bottle tariff I paid.

Reading material:

haul6

They give away free copies of T Magazine, The Daily Front Row and WWD at NYFW. So I try to load up. For rainy days and working in my daybook and getting ideas, they definitely come in handy.

in which i go to the Beauty 20 Awards dressed like a grownup

How do you know you’re making progress in blogland? The level of your invitations goes up, and your goody bag gets heavier.

Well, ok maybe that’s just me.

But here’s the thing- one invitation can only lead to another. I won a trip to Sniffapalooza, which led me to Beautypress, which got me to Spotlight Day, which landed me squarely at The Beauty 20 Awards.

I just had to dress like someonme who had some sense for a change.

beauty201

Luckily? I had just gotten some dry cleaning done. I ripped open that plastic and suddenly had a ladylike outfit- that just happened to have all the color of a rainbow.

In order to be presentable, I clothed myself in an Escada jacket with velvet lapels and pocket flaps, a white button down shirt and A-line skirt with front pleat and slit pockets from Ann Taylorn and the appropriate footwear in the form of black (freshly polished) Franco Sarto heels. My Grafton frames from glasses.com and my ShopJacquelineRose black buddha mala necklace (stands for prosperity) rounded out my disguise.

I mean outfit. Ahem. I sprayed on some Joy Forever, because being a lady isn’t just about your clothing.

beauty202

Located in the lovely 404 Space in Mid-town manhattan, the first floor featured tables where the creme of the beauty industry chatted and networked. Everyone received a glossy box and a copy of New Beauty magazine upon check-in. Then it was upstairs to survey the buffet. I put down my jacket, glossy box and my ParMana Designs Dream Awake shoulder bag to load up on  Mediteranean style olive salad and feta cheese, and the most delicious salted caramel ice cream.

Yum.

beauty203

With a deliciously earthy glass of red wine, I settled in to snack and observe. And to open my first Glossy Box ever. Now I know what the fuss was about-  I got shampoo and conditioner from Uberliss, a highlighting creme from Kryolan, moisturizer from Eslor, and glittery nail polish from SpaRitual. Imean- hello?!?!?!:? Thank you sir, can I have another?

the only problem was that when the awards started, I was still eating, sipping wine, and looking through my copy of New Beauty. So I stayed on the mezzanine, and got comfortable. It was kind of like being the only VIP. Or a leper, but I like to look on the bright side.

beauty204

Arent these gorgeous? Every winner gets one of these and is allowed a 5 word acceptance speech. Startedin Paris by InnoCos Events in 2013, the Beauty 20 Awards are all about how our beauty companies are serving their customers and audiences vi 21st century technology. It’s a brand new day in beauty, and just handing out lipsticks at counters isn’t enough. Customers have to be engaged, and these winners are the best in the game.

When the awards were over (on schedule I might add) I was given another bag as a souvenir. I couldn’t even wait to get it home- I started rummaging through it on the train. They gave everyone the limited edition Net-A-Porter Glossy Box which had samples from Klorane, RGB cuticle oil, Ellis Faas‘s gorgeously lethal mascara, Kevyn Aucoin eyeshadow… insane. I loved it.

It was definitely worth putting on heels- even if my heels self-destructed on my way to the event. I’d rather have to go to the shoemaker than have missed my first awards show.

Next up: Dating Diary! Perrier, central Park, and that time we saw Scott Ian at the Strand Bookstore…
