Product Review: in which we talk about the Samsung GearFit for the health nuts out there

Back in March, I got the Samsung GearFit and started playing with it. Since I’ve been working on losing weight and shaping up, it was definitely something that I can use. In March I was at month three of my New Year’s resolution and this gae me the means to really measure my progress and set goals for myself.

I also thought it was cute.

Once I had it figured out, I wore it every time I went to the park to work out (I had just started walking then) and I loved glancing at my wrist to see how much progress I was making and how many calories I’d burned. I could also change songs on my phone through the GearFit‘s bluetooth hookup with that device.

I also held it under a faucet for 5 minutes just to make sure it was waterproof. So if you forget to take your GearFit off after working out and jump in the shower, you’re safe.

In order to work with the GearFit effectively, you need to download the GearFit Manager app so that it can connect with your phone for information storage and things like that. Technically you can use the GearFit without doing this but why would you do that?

The phone’s screen is bigger, so that it’s easier for you to see all the cool graphic backdrops and watch interfaces. You can also arrange the GearFit‘s panels to suit yourself so that if exercise and the stopwatch are your main priorities, they can come right after the watch when you swipe.

The GearFit works with Samsung’s S Health which I started using pretty mush as soon as I got the Samsung Galaxy S5 Active. The info from your GearFit watch travels through the magic of bluetooth into the phone, so now you have a comprehensive display of your own habits. You can study and quantify yourself all day long, which I personally enjoy.

When You snap on your GearFit, you can set your exercise goals and program the music you want etc. The GearFit becomes part of the way that you keep track of your habits through S Health (like taking pics of your food, which I forget to do a lot of times). I love knowing how heart rate, how long I worked out, how fast I managed to run, and how long I’ve been asleep. It makes me happy to know that I can run 11 miles an hour and that I slept for 6 hours and was motionless for 86% of that time. It’s proof of my progress.

I just wish the GearFit could tell me if I snore.

*the GearFit is $149, and you can get it at places like BestBuy.

in which we go to Crunch Gym and mess with that personal trainer stuff

So, not too long ago I managed to get my hands on a Samsung GearFit bracelet, which works with your phone to monitor your fitness progress. At the same time, 3-Day Passes from Crunch Gym magically appeared in the computer room at my building. I took it as a sign. After six months of gradually building up to walking three miles a day, and doing exercises in the house (situps, leg lifts, etc) I felt that I needed a step up, but wasn’t sure if I wanted to join a gym. Now? NO EXCUSES!!!

I emailed Courtney at the 54th Street location and arranged to come by and work with a trainer just to see how I liked it. I grabbed my sweats and my SUPRA sneakers and took off- well, I ran some errands then headed over there afterward.

After signing a waiver and stuff, I went up to the workout area and met with my trainer. Then we talked about my nutrition (mostly good except the bacon incident- I ate half a pund in three days), then I got weighed, then he actually pulled out some callipers and measured my fat and then we looked at everything on We also talked about my best friend cracked bulgure wheat and compared it to qiinoa. I won- but everyone wins when you eat right.

Moving on…

This was my trainer. I’m not into young guys, but he is super cute, so having my fat measured wasn’t as bad as if it were an ugly guy. His name is Nate and he’s an Elite Trainer at Crunch Gym on 254 West 54th Street. Yes, we get ELITE trainers on this blog. I am not a people person, especially when it comes to doing something as intimate as exercising, but I liked hanging out with him and having all this attention focused on my fitness. Funniest moment? he asked me if I took vitamins and I was like ‘Why would I do that?‘. It just came out, ok?

Anyway, back on topic, we did burpees and jumping jacks, and then boxed. I boxed!! It was actually a lot of fun. If I had money? I would pay Nate to hang out with me two days a week to exercise and talkk about stuff. He was really cool. I can honestly say that their ‘no judgements’ policy was upheld, and that he treated me with the respect that you give any human being that you’re interacting with. He did his job, and he had great manners. He’s

Did I mention cute? Oh yeah, that, too.

Afterwards, we went downstairs to and Nate dropped me off with Courtney (she’s the membership Advisor at that location and she’s super nice) and we went over the hows and whys and therefores of being a Crunch member. basiaclly- if you email her ( she can give you the lowdown on that location. Then she gave me a goodie bag.

Yes. I went to Crunch Gym and they gave me a goodie bag. What can I say? It be’s like that sometimes. crunch6

On the way out I made a point t snap the items in their little Crunch Gym boutique. If you forget your stuff, they have shorts, sport bras, tshirts, tank tops and lots of other stuff. You can also get cups, locks- all of that. And I found out that they have Bliss products in the showersat all New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Miami and Washington DC.   crunch7

Once I got home, I investigated my b=goodie bag thoroughly. It wasn’t just a personal present- they give this to everyone who joins at the 54th Street Crunch Gym. I got a dotFITkit containing a bottle of multi-vitamins, and four nutrition bars. I ate one on the train home.  there was a $40 giftcard to, they help with nutritious recipes and they shop for the ingredients then ship it to your home. And I got this most awesome and official Crunch Gym duffle bag to carry my schweddy clothes in.

I also got a slew of 3-day passes, and 1-Day Guest Pases so once you join, you can hook up your friends. In fact?

I’m gonna hook you guys up righ now- click HERE for a free 3-Day Pass + 1Training Session courtesy of the nice people at Crunch Gym. That’s right- just click the link and you’re in. Have fun!

Things I learned from Nate:

It’s been a week since my session. Did I learn anything? Yep!

1. Nate mentioned going on to check calories in food items, also to keep track of my meals and work on a meal schedule. I’m working that in, and keeping track of meals on my Samsung Galaxy S5 Active with the S Health App.

2. Nate said that it is not a good idea to skip meals, and that I should make sure that I get 104 calories in proten per day- like chicken, fish, etc. You can divide the number of protein calories vs the number of meals and that will give you a guideline to planning your meals.

3. Eat approximately two hours before bed.

4. I added burpees and jumping jacks to my workout at the park. I’m following his advice to start with ten of each, then add another set with one less, and so on until you get to one. I feel like it’s making a difference.

The funny thing about exercise is that you will see a difference. Even if you backslide, you can work the damage back off- and that will give you swagger.

Skin care corner:

I don’t have Bliss products piped out of the faucets at my house, but I am trying something new that I think is perfect for those of us who are regularly working out and sweating all over the place. It’s a skincare line called Mirai Clinical from Japan. The idea behind these products, in addition to the usual anti-aging and beautifying, is that they are designed to combat body odor. Technically the odor that comes from older people, but let’s not split hairs.

The Purifying Body Wash ($29) is paraben free and contains exclusive Japanese persimmon extract, which is a natural odor eliminator. That means that you can shower after a workout and know that you don’t stink. The Purifying & Hydrating Face Wash ($25) will help wash away the bacteria in sweat that’s going to cause breakouts. The Purifying Body Serum ($29) smoothly moisturizes your whole body aand their 3-in-1 Multi-Tasking Face Serum ($45) tightens and smooths the skin and can work as a great makeup primer if you’re going to layer on cosmetics. There’s also a Purifying Body Spritzer ($14) that immediately kills odor. Keep it in your bag for freshen-ups.

*Hint- a tiny amount goes a long way! You get heaps of lather and bubbles from the cleansers- so don’t overpump.

Here’s a 10% Discount Coupon for you if you decide you want to buy anything:

in which we go out and deliver cookies, do some windowshopping and shoot a little streetstyle

This is one of those looooong posts, but by the end we’ll be totally caught up and ready for anything.

May 10th:

I had some events in the city (as some of us call the isle of Manhattan) and I was going to maximize my carfare by using my time to also give away cookies to nice people who have given me invitations or stuff to write about. I had this amazing Aloha powder supplement to add to my smoothies (last packet, sniff!) along with chunks of fresh ginger and carrot, strawberries, half a beet, peanut butter and fresh squeezed grapefruit juice. That was a good smoothie.

Went for my walk in the park wearing my fave Citizen Ciao t-shirt over my long sleeved Uniqlo shirt with leggings and my old Cat Footwear sandals from last summer.

I washed up and baked some cookies, like 4 or 5 dozen, then got them packaged and stuck a business card on the side. Ready!!

Ok, well- I got dressed first. may104

have I ever explained how much I love the Columbus Circle stop? It has never changed, and every time I see that big globe I get a little teary-eyed.  may105

Central Park- lush foliage, street vendors, horses dressed in costumes. may106

NY Fashion, behind the scenes! may107

I went to my event and then walked around for awhile since I was done dropping stuff off. Ate this sandwich they gave me at the press preview, looked at tall buildings. I’m such a tourist when I go into Manhattan!

 Windowshopping & Concrete Runway:may108

So every trip into Manhattan is a chance to get caught up on what’s hot and happening in NYC. I adore and worship this carryall that I saw in teh window of Henri Bendel’s. This Topshop window showcased an Asian theme, smart since they got Topshop on the Met Gala Red Carpet.  may109

This was cool- my walk took me from India to a window featuring Bigfoot. sad because I used to have a Polaroid Land Camera and dropped it one day on a tile floor right before a photoshoot. may1091

Club Monaco‘s pretty, minimalist frill white dress, and some madness from Opening Ceremony that caught my eye. So want that coat! may1092

Love these pretty, kitschy accessories. None of this stuff is expensive. That’s the trick of New York- necessities are super expensive, but you can get gewgaws like this for cheap. may1093

So New York. may1094

Loved this knock-off fashion display. there are tons of little stores all over the place that have adorable merch. Why people rely on running into chain-store fast fashion is beyond me. But, whatever. may1095

It’s funny how you can get all Bill Cunningham and start seeing trends and coincidences. I spotted the first black and white outfit at the press preview, and the monochrome trend kept popping up. Ending in the third image where EVERYONE was wearing it. may1096

Leopard print shoes and sneakers.

Just three outfits I liked. I so loved the pregnant badass in lace and denim- I chased her down, actually. Her boots are perfection. Congrats, little mama!

May 14:

Getting ready to head into town!!! I liked the ease of this Daisy Fuentes dress from last summer, it went perfectly with my Cat Footwear Squander boots and my REpurposing NOLA custom made boho chic handbag (thank you so much Traci!). 2may142

This time out, certain people who have gone above and beyond got brownie bites AND cookies. Today I was feeling ribbony, trying to use up the last of the ribbon that I bought at Easter for my Birthday Month projects.

I know I look a little sad in this shot? But I’m really trying to show off my Sumptuous Olive MAC eyeshadow and Makeup Forever Ink Liner– done in three minutes. I also added my Aries necklace from Shop Jacqueline Rose– my everyday necklace since I got it last month. I made sure to pack my 48 cent copy of Mill On The Floss- a classic that I found at Strand Bookstore. It’s tragic, but also illuminating. You should read it. 2may144

I dropped off treats then headed to one of my favorite places in NYC. Madison Square Park always has a challenging outdoor installation going on. This on is called Fata Morgana and it’s up until winter.2may145

And then ran into the Almay beauty team who were having a #SimplyAmerican cookout right there in the street. Hot dogs and pretzels, free makeovers, and a lipstick tower. You were supposed to guess how many. I was taking the photo when one woman asked me if I was going to guess. Before I could muzzle myself, I said ‘I don’t have that kind of time’ which was mean. But she also stepped right in front of me just as I raised my camera to shoot. two wrongs don’t make a right, but still. 2may146

This is the only streetsyle shot that I took that day. And the funny thing was that because the snake was so out there, I was going to not take the photo. However, I was walking down Broadway and this person walked next to me for so many blocks that I wondered if there was a divine effort to make me take this photo. So I took it and it was gorgeous.  2may147

Saw this cute Moschino phone case- or maybe it’s a knockoff. Just thought it was adorable. Also took a second to shoot a photo of the Samsung Gear Fit that I picked up (thanks, guys!) and the awesome goodie bag that I got from the Underhaus‘ Swimpop 15 swimwear pop-up. I was going to instagram the pics, but I was exhausted, so I just went home and took a nap. 2may148

Put my Samsung GearFit on as soon as I got home. LOVE it! We’ll be talking about that soon…

Then I jumped into my Swimpop 15 gift bag- of course, right? I mean- it’s me! I got coupons with discount codes from swimwear brands (see the blog post for that info), baked bean crisps from Enlightened, a Skinny Girl beverage, Coco Nutz Pina Colada malt beverage (serious kick for 8% alcohol!) and a My Cabana Boy gadget that helps you spray sunscreen or self-tanner on your back.

This is a cute little bag from Mia Marcelle that I decided to give the DIY treatment to. Stay tuned, I’ll finish it soon and then talk about it.

May 20th:

These trees don’t look like this anymore- but I still wanted to use the pics to talk about walking down this particular block.

Went to the restaurant supply store to get some tops and cookie canisters- and they were out. NOOOO! I also saw these squirt bottles, and I am keeping them in mind for making designs on cookies, like nice caramel squiggles and things. I went home and used my last few canisters, but only one had a lid. LUCKILY I had these sweet treat bags, so everything still looked pretty. Ran out of hangtags, though.

I didn’t dress up for my trip into the city, even though I had a press preview to attend, because I was scheduled to work out at Crunch Gym as part of my weight loss resolution thing. We’ll get to that soon. I was walking the streets of New York dropping off cookies wearing sweatoants and a modcloth tshirt, Southern Tide Summer cardigan, my RE purposing NOLA bag, and these Cuttler sneakers from SUPRA footwear. AND my SEB headwrap (flashback!). I did make sure to put on some lipstick, in a hot red from Makeup Forever, which was not a coincidence since I was dropping off cookies at their pr company.

After a day of running here and there, I finally made it back home to look at my new beauty goodies from Urban Beauty United (rose gold accented makeup brushes with frou frou pink bristles) and ALL the summer goodies from Makeup Forever from Equalizer primer to Aqua Matic eyeshadow pencils to Aqua Lips gloss- plus a new ProBronze Fusion compact that I can’t wait to use on my next shoot.

Ok, we are all caught up now… have a great Memorial Day!!!
