in which we go off to Roosevelt Island for (free) bike riding lessons with Bike New York

bike1

I decided to do some things that I haven’t had time to do, and one of them was re-learning how to ride a bike. I haven’t been balanced on two wheels since I was 12 years old, and that wasn’t exactly a banner day anyway. I searched ‘free bike lessons’ and tada! It appeared.

That’s the wonder of New York.

bike2

After a harum scarum search for available spots (as you can assume, the classes fill up fast) I was able to snag a lesson on Roosevelt Island with the Bike New York gang. They actually have helmets for everyone, so if you don’t have one and are not even sure how to buy one, you can feel safe showing up without one.

bike3

I figured it was best to keep it simple, so I wore my h&m basics $5 tee shirt and LL Bean True Shape denim jeans ($59) with my Southern Tide classic leather shackle belt ($65). I had my Samsung GearFit ($99.99) so that I could finally try the cycling exercise setting, and my Brazilian Begonia Lisa Hoffman fragrance bracelet ($65) for luck. I didn’t bother with makeup, just H20 Plus marine Defense Green Tea Antioxidant Lotion SPF 30 ($42) and some lip balm.

I think the green helmet was tres chic, don’t you?

bike4

Bike New York volunteers lined us up in size order and we were fitted to our bikes. The main thing being that your feet are flat on the ground when you’re astride it. Luckily I had this water bottle from a fashion event last year, so I was prepared for an afternoon of riding. I also had some granola and homemade banana nut bread tucked away in my knapsack, since they advise that you bring snacks.

bike5

When you start, Bike New York has you learn on a bike with no pedals. You spend about an hour learning to balance. It’s actually huge fun. Once you’ve demonstrated an ability not to kill yourself, you get the pedals- a major moment. When I got mine, I felt like a BMX racer.

When I was a kid, I was always fearful of a. getting my bike stolen (which did happen) or b. falling off/getting into an accident. The most dangerous part of doing this 2 hour class was looking out for other students sudden stops. The volunteers are there to guide and help and it’s a really friendly process. You do end up super hungry and thirsty though, so when they say bring snacks? Bring your snacks.

I was so glad I went! It was exhilarating to realize that I now held the power to fly around New York without being bound by subway snarls. well, as soon as I learn how to ride in traffic.

bike6

If you want to sign up, here are the classes that they have available:

1. Learn to Ride (Adults) : you learn how to balance and brake, and then hopefully how to pedal.

2. Bicycling Basics: core cycling skills, like how to adjust your helmet and seat, how to make sure your bike is road ready, etc.

3. Street Skills Ride: they teach you how to stay safe while riding crazy NY streets, albeit in a no-traffic environment. *actually? you would be in street traffic. my bad- Bike NYC contacted me about that. see comments below -FB 8/6/15*

They have even more classes and events, so if you’re in New York and looking for bike lessons or looking to volunteer, you should contact them. All the info you need is at www.bike.nyc.

Lucky Community styling post featuring animal prints for ss2015 (rawr!)

So the prompt for Lucky Community came and it was all about animal print, since that is the new neutral (that’s what they said).  I ran in the closet and the delivery pile and started styling…

Outfit 1:

1 1a 1b

I figured I’d start with a casual outfit, perfect for school or work. This is pretty easy to pull off and the white pant is comfortable and a great piece to mix patterns around. This outfit has checks, stripes, and print- but you really don’t feel it…
Outfit 2:
2
This look was inspired by all the festival style tweets I was seeing last week. I loved mixing the colors, but also how easy this is- jump out of bed, grab pieces, dress, leave- done. Those boots are super comfortable by the way, and cut to conform to the shape of your foot.
calvin klein shortsleeve animal print sweater
ann taylor a-line skirt with slit pockets
Outfit 3:
3a 3b 3c
This may be my fave because of the humour involved. Very proper lady wears gold oxfords and a bucket hat!!! This is also the most personal look, since most of it is thrifted. It’s my smartass punk dowager look resurfacing, lol!
green bucket hat, $7 on Fulton Street in Brooklyn
vintage leopardskin cardigan (Monk Thrift Store, NY)
harve benard white cotton shortsleeved blouse (thrift)
black silk pleated skirt (thrift)
marc jacobs daisy solid perfume pin/pendant (limited edition)
lisa hoffman link bracelet with fragrance pendant (limited edition)
Next up: recap of Mar/April because I miss talking about nothing

in which we get many, many, many deliveries… and LOVE it

Oh the joys of a new season! It’s the time that the emails start flying for roundups, personal style posts, photoshoots… It’s the time when I spend all day in the window looking out for UPS and Fedex. It’s spring!!! Let’s look at what the delivery man dropped off!

Beauty:

beauty instawave instr beauty yardley

I recently received an InstaWave curling iron- which I’ll be using for an upcoming Spring Style photoshoot (shhh! top secret!). It helps you create those long, beachy waves without fuss and stress. I love love love soap, so a shipment of Yardley Artisan Soap (in oat milk & honey and lavender & rosemary scents) was a welcome addition to the bath beauty drawer. Coincidentally, the soap came with the Instrumental Beauty Home Spa Treatment System, which we’ve already reviewed (thumbs up!).

beauty completely bare

I went to the Completey Bare Market around Valentine’s Day and got curious about home hair removal. there’s a product review coming up but I can tell you now: start saving your money and wax at home. It’s not that hard.

Makeup:

makeup kavd mfe

More makeup that I could ever use? Not so much! Spring and Summer demand new looks and I was lucky enough to hook up with Makeup Forever to update my makeup bag. And believe me, we’ll be talking about EVERYTHING over the next two seasons.

I do want to mention some things right now, like the Equalizer Primers for skin probs and radiance- I got the smoothing and hydrating primers and they are wonderful. Also? The super bright new Aquamatic Irridescent Blue waterproof eyeshadow pencil– you need this. The New York Times T Magazine has a video tutorial on how to work bold eyeliner:

Skin Deep: Bold Liners

and recently Anna Camp went to the MTV Awards with a bold eye look created by Melanie Inglessis with Makeup Forever products. her inspiration? “I wanted to create a makeup look that would match Anna’s vibrant and fun dress, while giving a nod to the 60s with a modern twist.”

You also went to get in on the Kat von D perfect matte lipstick, Underage Red, ironically priced at $21(it’s legal!). Just saying it adds a little frisson of controversy to the day!

Fragrance:

fragrance fiori bella poppy wildflower

When you wish for fragrance and it comes dancing to the door… I’m working on a spring fragrance roundup and managed to have these sent over: fiori and bella from Vince Camuto, Poppy Wildflower from Coach and Be Delicious from DKNY. Mmmm, can you smell your fragrance future?

home clean perfume

I won’t even open these Clean Perfume products in Warm Cotton (reed diffuser, room spray, and candle) until my home decorating project is done. But I HAVE opened the perfume rollerball, and it’s lovely. It smells clean, fresh, and sort of comforting.

Clothing:

home southern tide

When I met Southern Tide president Allen Stephenson at a press preview last month, I thought it he was just selling clothes. Then? I found out that old boy was selling EVERYTHING.  Southern Tide is a lifestyle brand, the best one that you may not have heard of. Everything that they sent was made right here in the US- shopped from Greenville, SC.

I admit to getting out of hand- but a woman with a home decorating project has to be ruthless. I just opened the Performance Towel set for my bathroom springcleaning refresh- and out came soft terrycloth towels- and handtowels and washcloths. Behold the Towel Tower!

clothing southerntide

Don’t worry- we’ll be talking about the clothes pretty soon. In fact? You can see how the women’s Summer Cardigan works with animal print in this Lucky Shops Community post. So cute.

clothing ll bean

In keeping with my American Brand fetish- I snagged some choice pieces from LL Bean Signature (also featured in the latest Lucky post). I felt like the Signature Check Chambray was a real must have. The navy and red striped poplin fit and flare dress? Do I even have to say anything?

clothing amiclubwear accessories amiclubwear

Remember this romper from my Pastels Lucky post? It came all rolled up in a box with this faux leather lock tote and crazy coral and gold booties. Fancy is not the word, darling! I could put on all three on a summer day and prance.

Accessories:

accessories tommy bahama lucky

Loved when this mint green infinity scarf showed up as my Lucky magazine subscription gift. Look how it matches this Tommy Bahama beach towel? Sigh… The beach is in my future, y’all!

accessories ume drive bracelets

I have told you and told you about the Ume Drive bracelets from the time that I met CEO Clem Harrigan at a fashion event. They were sweet enough to send over two more- and I have to be honest: I was going to do a giveaway, but I would rather keep them Go to www.umedrive.com and get your own. And get a lot, because you’ll be color coding your data to which USB bracelet you’re wearing that day.

accessories sjr rpnola cat

My birthday came and so did these most awesome prezzies. This sweet, delicate zodiac sign necklace is from one of my faves, Shop Jacqueline Rose (a fellow Aries) and it is my new everyday necklace. After sending me Christmas stockings and Hot Mess skincare products, Traci Claussen of REpurposing NOLA hauled off and MADE me a bag. Yep- just for me. I LOVE her.

Cat Footwear came through ON my birthday with these hot hot Squander boots, and they instantly became my new combat boot. I’ll be running these all spring and summer.

Ok- we’re all caught up – at least on deliveries. I have felt so guilty about not posting about these!!! There are lots of fun posts in the works, so you will be seeing and learning more about this stuff, so stay tuned.

NYFW Clothing Diary- what I wore in the freezing cold to go to the last MBFW at Lincoln Center

The only thing worse than going to Fashion Week in the dead of winter is not being invited to go to Fashion Week in the dead of winter. It’s the best time to see your friends, catch up on favorite brands, peoplewatch and shoot streetsyle, and try to make professional connections. If you’re not invited to anything, you may as well pull down your blog and go get a job.

Let’s get on with it…

Day One:

nyfwlooks1

the moment of truth arrived and I had not lost the weight that I wanted so my choices were limited. I decided to go with nerdchic layers mixing thrift store pieces with brand presents. The scarf and skirt are from last winter, and the tights are from Jack’s 99 World (.99). I layered on a Citizen Ciao Victoria Bay tshirt ($38) and my fave red Kensie Clothing high-low cardigan and then my LL Bean Freeport field jacket ($59). Finished off a dark grey wool beanie, a long stripey scarf around my neck and these Irenea Cat Footwear booties ($120) on my feet. The black and white bag is the Speedy from Kensie ($87.95).

I did a neutral eye (Aveda Allspice and Golden Cypress petal essence eyeshadows), heavy black eyeliner (Makeup Forever ink liner with butterLONDON Wink eye pencil in Union Jack Black ) and Rimmel London Scandaleyes mascara. Tata Harper Voluminous lip & cheek tint in Very Naughty ($35) put apples in my cheeks, and I went with a red lip (Makeup Forever Aqualip pencil in C19, Stila Liquid Stay All Day liquid lipstick in Fiery, and Rozge lipgloss in Barcelona) because that felt right.

nyfwlooks2

Ran into Rhea Santos of Sew Stylish Rhea and Glasgow (Dynel) Skinner of My Life On and Off the Guest List. So much fun! I ended up sitting near Glasgow at the Desigual show, which never happens.

nyfwlooks3

The Desigual ‘World of Creativity’ show was electric. I can’t wait to get that written up. In the audience were Katie Holmes, Drake, and model Adriana Lima. On the runway was Behati Prinsloo and Desigual brand ambassador Chantelle Winnie.

nyfwlooks3a

After the show we ambled over the Tide Fashion Closet where stylist Jennifer Eve Eisner (photo 1) was on hand to tell everyone about clothing maintenance and closet organization. I trust her. She had on real Valentino Garavani studded ballet slippers in neon green and said she wore them with everything (see them in photo 2).

They gave away cups of Blue Print Cleanse juice and bags of Tide Detergent pods. It was one of the most popular places to sit since they had this great white leather furniture and a charging station. I met Lorna Solana of The Fabulous Report, and Angela of The Little Black SuitcaseSarah Jessica Parker walked by, as did Bethann Hardison and Lynn Yaeger. That Tide corner was the hotspot. meanwhile we were all just sitting there drinking free juice and laughing at She Has Had It.

Day Two:

nyfwlooks4

I had to get to a show at 10 am, but I thought it was a presentation. I woke up late, almost didn’t leave the house, then finally got dressed and ran out. Forgot my hat, hair actually froze. Forgot gloves, not enough layers. Hated my makeup.

Sufferation.

Then I missed the show. Technically this outfit doesn’t exist. BUT check out my full length selfi thanks to my voice activated Samsung Galaxy S5 Active cameraphone! Did you guys notice? So now, as long as I remember to get it done, I’ll be doing full length selfies.

Day Three:

nyfwlooks5

Ok, THIS time I was going to make my show. Woke up early, showered, ate cracked bulgur wheat and everything. I wore my grey velvet coat that I bought in a thrift store in 2010, and the SUPRA Footwear Cuttler sneakers ($75) from the day before. A white button down shirt showed under a v-necked woven sweater from Kensie Clothing, both haphazardly tucked into a pair of LL Bean Trueshape Denim slimfit jeans ($59). I added a red jade Lisa Hoffman Beauty tunisian neroli fragrance bracelet ($65) to pick up the red in my sweater and lips. I brushed  Probelle Beauty Richness on my nails, accenting with Feeling Sexy (red, again). I gave myself a retro smokey eye with my Kevyn Aucoin ($42) and then just ran out the door.

nyfwlooks6

I managed to make it to Son Jung Wan, but I ended up not having a seat. That turned out to be a good thing because I was able to see the whole runway. the show was colorful, full of fur and sparkles. That’s also going to be reviewed here soon. Kelly Rutherford, Kelly Bensimmon, and Gene Simmons’ kids Nick and Sophie were also in the audience.

20150214_171124-1

It snowed on the way home.

Day Five:

nyfwlooks8

I didn’t have any Sunday events, so we jump ahead a  day to Monday the 16th. It was just a blogger lounge where brands want to meet ‘influencers’ so I wasn’t going to dress up. I grabbed my LL Bean tumbled leather Lounger boots ($249) which are super warm and go so well with my favorite crazy socks from Jacks 99 World (.99). I wore a great, drapey, soft Eric + Lani tshirt over a sweatshirt and under a rabbit fur jacket from the thrift storea nd my l bean jacket. Those sweat pants were $16 at Rainbow last summer. The bag is a faux snakeskin hobo from Kensie ($87.95)

nyfwlooks9

My favorite discovery at TechStyle Lounge was this UME Drive bracelet (4 for $100), and my second favorite was this Selfie Stage from Stylinity ($19.99 and it has a suction cup on the back!)  for hands-free selfies.

20150216_194234

Stopped by Key Food and bought provisions. I was out of leeks. That is the last bread that I can eat until after Lent. I am so sad about that- but this was my last sandwich, so…

20150217_142458

It was so good. So, so , sooooooooooooooooooo good.

Sigh.

Day Five:

nyfwlooks91

Yeah, it was cold and I was tired. It was snowing, too. So I stayed home and made red bean soup and looked at all the loot that I’d managed to accrue. We’ll talk about that later.

Day Six:

Photographed loot, ate soup, posted NYFW Streetsyle to blog.

Day Seven:

I got invited to see Cinderella!!!! Just randomly. So I trooped back over to Lincoln center to hangout with him and two male models at the screening. Fate, karma, serendipity.

nyfwlooks92

I had to step it up a little- and for me that always mean breaking out the Escada jacket. I did a polka dot Eric + Lani longsleeved tshirt under a striped punk rock mohair sweater and bravely wore leggings (ok, I had two pairs of leggings on). I wore my LL Bean jacket under the Escada and my Cat Footwear Irenea boots.I wore my fave brass snake bracelet, Lia Sophia earrings, and this Brazilian Begonia bracelet ($75)

Bag of the day was this peachy pink number from Kensie Clothing which has a fun separate zippered compartment in the front to keep things like your Lucky magazine from getting all crumpled. The color of this bag matches the color of the Lucky logo on this month’s Lupita Nyon’go covered issue, too. It also went perfectly with my Desigual scarf (everyone who attended the NYFW show got one).

Serendipitous.

nyfwlooks93

I wore my hot pink beanie and the scarf that Desigual gave everyone at the show (it’s so pretty!). The great thing about cold weather is that I feel comfortable putting on makeup. I did a fast makeover using Susan Posnick colorflo mineral makeup brushes and colorcorrect highlighting and concealing pencil. I used Aveda Aubergine and Golden Cypress petal essence eyeshadows, Makeup Forever Ink Liner ($23) and my bullet shaped Ellis Faas E401 mascara with a little Origins GinZing brightening mascara.

Same red lip, same red products: Tata Harper Voluminous lip & cheek tint in Very Naughty ($35) put apples in my cheeks, Makeup Forever Aqualip pencil in C19, Stila Liquid Stay All Day liquid lipstick in Fiery, and Rozge lipgloss in Barcelona). After years of feeling not qualified- I have hit my red lip stride.

nyfwlooks94

I adored Cinderella (review coming up later, don’t worry!). The costumes were heavenly. The sets were perfect, and if the script and acting weren’t great- let’s remember that this is for kids. I adored Cate Blanchet as Lady Tremaine the Wicked Stepmother. Her wardrobe alone is worth the ticket price. I loved how the whole story revolves around making the right shoe choice. The glass slipper on display in the lobby made me think of these adorable Ami Clubwear single sole tropical print pumps that it was too cold to wear.

Someday…

2014 in review: redesigns, parties, and standing next to Kelly Rutherford

So one time, six months ago, a pr lady told me that even though I had slaved over arranging, executing and promoting a photo shoot prominently featuring her clients products on prominent NY Fashion Bloggers- my numbers weren’t high enough for her clients to continue to work with me.

Ain’t that something? I had to take to my bed for two weeks from anger and disappointment.

After that, I decided to work on my ‘numbers’ and luckily, they got better. But I’m happier about the fact that people are enjoying my content than anything else. That pr lady can suck it.

Also? I had a lot of friends and worked with a ton of people who liked me more than my numbers. And I also got to stand next to Kelly Rutherford at the DKNY25 event, so…

Also, you may have noticed the the blog has a new look- that was an accident. I started messing around and then couldn’t  get it back to the way it was- so I just went ahead and committed to a new look for 2015.

So that was my year… I had fun. And oh yeah, the fricken numbers are up.

NUMBERS:

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2014 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

The concert hall at the Sydney Opera House holds 2,700 people. This blog was viewed about 8,600 times in 2014. If it were a concert at Sydney Opera House, it would take about 3 sold-out performances for that many people to see it.

Dating Diary: #StreetArtbyPerrier, Central Park, and Scott Ian at The Strand Bookstore

Not to be all ‘SATC’ about it, because there will be no kissing and telling, but the dating thing…is going fairly well. It’s slow and steady. It’s more like Seinfeld than anything- nothing big happens. It’s awesome.

One week, he just came over, I made dinner, we talked a lot, and that was it. And it was enough.

1 perrier date

Ok, we did have one big spectacle date. We went to the #StreetArtbyPerrier event together, because it happened to coincide with his day off. You can see how that went here. also, I wanted to dazzle him with my ‘glamorous’ blogging career, so he doesn’t think I just sit home all day playing with makeup.

cpdate1

The next time we hung out, I made falafel omelets. They were so good! And cornbread muffins with golden raisins, fresh squeezed grapefruit juice, and the condiments were mango chutney and vietnamese chili garlic sauce. The salad is just iceberg lettuce, cucumbers, cherry tomatoes and feta cheese. then I quickly toasted pita bread in the frying pan and ripped it into pieces as a garnish. So tasty. that sauce? Yogurt + sour cream, with dried dill. You just let it sit for an hour before you use it. Simple.

cpdate2

Thus fortified, we set out for Central Park. I have noticed that I tend to co-ordinate my outfits to his. This time I went woodsy, with  my fave long cardigan belted with my LL Bean signature 3/4 leather belt in guide gold. Under this I wore that  blue and yellow Brooklyn tshirt that I got at rainbow, an enamel Desigual necklace, and my ugly plaid skirt that I found thrifting, and my Beautifeel oxfords- no laces. I know, It’s not sexy- but I’m not trying to be a sex symbol. I want to be liked for myself.

cpdate3

We were supposed to go the the Metropolitan Museum of Art, but we’re both kind of lazy, so we ended up getting to Central Park at that golden hour when everything is beautiful- but it’s too late to go to the museum. So we just wandered around talking, and looking at how amazing Central Park can be in the fall. It’s that moment when you really get how New York can be the ‘extra character’ in movies. It was magical.

cpdate4

Central Park was awash in tutus for some reason. We wandered from Belvedere Castle then over to Bethesda Fountain. As we walked, someone was singing opera and there was a real ballerina really dancing in actual toe shoes. Like, how? Does this happen? It was really truly like being in a rom-com. There was even a photo shoot going on- looked like bridal.

Needless to say, that date ended in a plan for another one.

stranddate1

He works late, and I live near his job, so at this point- since we are both sleepaholics who don’t get up til afternoon, he just camps out at my place and we go out from there. This is me painting my nails with the awesome Probelle beauty Bundle #3. 3 gorgeous nail colors and a ‘wet look’ topcoat that seals the polish perfectly. and yeah, that’s my green oasis bracelet. And this is me, after moisturizing my natural hair with Ojon Rare Blend Conditioning Shampoo. It was late, so I just wore my fave mohair sweater and jeans. A tiny little bit of gold shimmer powder from Ulta on the eyelids and a tiny hit of Mary Kay lash Love mascara, and some Origins Drink Up lip balm.

As you can see- I need a nap. but whatever, it was worth it. stranddate2

I made a sort of Spanish late night dinner with black bean soup and a plate of manchego cheese stuffed medjool dates and roasted almonds with bacon bits. Why? because it’s fun to see his face when I serve up something unexpected. We’re both on the artistic people’s budget (he moved here to work in film) so being resourceful with food is a way to lessen the pressure of dating. stranddate3

After talking for 5 hours, we finally fell asleep, and the next day we had ramen soup for lunch. Which is surprising easy to do. Just check out www.japanesecooking101.com. Then we took off for Manhattan for our big adventure. stranddate4

As uaual, I picked up on his color scheme and ran with it. I did a blue 3/4 sleeve cableknit cardigan that I got at Marshall’s when I worked there, a white basic H&M $5 v neck tshirt, and my Life is good novella skirt. It was still hot so I wore my Cat Footwear Zosia sandals. The accessories were my Desigual paisley clutch with braided leather strap from MBFW, my Hechizo khamra clasp necklace (love),  green oasis bracelet, and of course- my nerdchic Kensington Road Collection frames from glasses.com. Ready, coordinated, and off to meet rockstars.

stranddate5

In our usual leisurely fashion, we set out from the hinterlands of East Flatbush to go to the fabled Strand Bookstore for an in-store event. Scott Ian from Anthrax was going to be talking about his new book, I’m the Man, and there was going to be free Pork Slap pale ale. YES. This really happened. We showed up and there was just 20 minutes left, but it was an amazing 20 minutes.

stranddate7

Actual rare books in the Rare Book Room at the Strand Bookstore. Isn’t it wild? We were in a room with a book written by Byron and published in 1819. And then I took a photo of it with my 2014 cameraphone. Check this inscribed flyleaf- now you know that the stuff you see on The Strand Tumblr is real.

stranddate8

Then we spent the next hour or so rooting around for books. It took me awhile- I mean, The Barbie Doll Boom was calling my name- but I ended up getting a copy of The Mill on the Floss by George Eliot for .52. yeah, high end literature for half a buck. You have to love the Strand and New York.

stranddate6

This is Scott Ian, the person who made on of my favorite tracks ever- the Anthrax/Public Enemy duet of Bring the Noise. If you have some money, go buy his book- they may even have some signed copies left at the Strand (but you prob won’t get any beer).

I love dating. We’re making these incredible memories together, you know? I hope this lasts forever.

xoxo, Faith/Sassy Ethnic Bohemian

in which i finally make it to a Beautypress event (Spotlight Day)

I actually missed a free boat ride this summer.

sunset1

Thanks to that time I went to Sniffapalooza, I was invited to the Beautypress Summer Sunset Sail and thanks to bad planning and the fact that I walk really slowly and kind of had nothing to wear really but tried anyway, I ended up getting on the train late and never made it to the pier.sunset2sunset3

All of this happened without me… All. Of. This. And then they sailed past the Statue of Liberty, so me missing the boatride was faintly un-American.  sunset4

So when they asked if I wanted to go to Spotlight Day, I was all in. I woke up early (well, early in the afternoon, I picked the cocktail hour option) and made sure that I was dressed and out of the house in time to make it. I was NOT missing this event.

spotlightday1

I threw on my fave brown velvet blazer over that basic h&m striped tee I bought in August and squeezed myself into my true shape jeans from LL Bean, which look adorable even while accomodating my Chubby Chubs belly. I embellished it with my new perforated leather bow tie with contrasting stitching that I got from Lesley Ware at Nolche Verde, and by gorgeous Ariel charm necklace from ShopJacquelineRose. I was ready, and I was determined to be ON TIME. spotlightday5

Made it! And it was AMAZING. As soon as you come in the door- beauty products. Moisturizers, mascara, eyeliner, press-on nails, false eyelashes, EVERYTHING you need to be a girl.

And then some extra stuff so you can be an uber girl, then go home and peel it all off. The first thing in my bag was the Derma E firming moisturizer, along with an amazing eye pencil from Xtreme Lash (a soft, velvety kohl effect).  Kiss & ImPress Press-On Manicures was offering free mani-makeovers and also eyelash applications. spotlightday2

I met Meredith Smith of Sweet Anthem Perfumes. A former Microsoft employee, she’s turned to the world of fragrance with a collection of scents based on literature. Every fragrance is named for a character in a book or myth. She just got picked up by Anthropologie.com, and hopes to open a brick and mortar shop here in New York one day.

spotlightday3

Lavera is a European company that sells cosmetics through health food stores across the world. Which kind of blew my mind. If you don’t go to health food stores, then you’re missing out- because they are not at Sephora at all. They gave me a sample from their skincare line, True Natural, a hydrating moisturizer featuring spagyric, organic pearl extract, organic shea butter and anti-oxidant vitamin E. They also do an organic self-tanning line, which was featured in Elle magazine.

spotlightday4

Saw my fave makeup lady Lauren Napier who was showing off her amazing CLEANSE wipes. I still remember meeting her at The Makeup Show and tucking her wipes into my goodie bags at my first anniversary celebration. It’s always a pleasure to see Lauren and hear about her progress. CLEANSE is currently sold at Kenig Alcone, right here in NY. On the way to the cocktail bar I ran into Rana Campbell, who I had met briefly at the Katty Xiomara Nolcha Fashion Week Show last month. I recognized her by her Otterbox Symmetry phone case, lol! spotlightday6

Time for refreshments… lovely prosecco cocktails with either raspberry or beet, and delicious sandwiches from Le Pain Quotidien. So good. I got a flute with raspberry first and then went back for the one with the beet slice since it was such an interesting idea- and healthy drinking, right? And the french bread sandwiches were delicious. Just the right bit for the moment. spotlightday7

I dropped by the Bodyography table and spoke to Lori Lieb, who is passionate about her product and has flawless eyeshadow. She showed off her Electric Lip Slides, glorious burts of lip nourishing color that can be used as a lipstick, gloss or stain. Really impressive product. And Bodyography makeup is PETA certified, vegan, and gluten free. spotlightday8When I got home and emptied out my editor bag, I had all of this… so we’re going to be talking about beauty for awhile. Yay!

the time my little bro took me to shake shack for lunch in the rain

So, believe it or not, I have a family. Two brothers, and the youngest lives here in NY. It’s hard to explain my relationship with them except to say that i tend to end up doing my own thing a lot while my brothers are usually part of some kind of unit- whether it’s work or just life. I’m just the outsider of the family, but I try every so often to do something that involves them in some way. Like, inviting my brother over to my place for dinner…

But as usual, at the last minute he changes plans and we end up at Shake Shack on Flatbush because he says it’s too far to come to my house (which is like 6 stops away from where we ended up). Um. Ok. I guess.

As you may have noticed, I always start by packing my bag. I’m kind of absent minded, so I try to put everything together beforehand. Today I had to remember to take the Otterbox Iphone 5  Symmetry case that I got at Nolcha Fashion Week. I don’t have an iphone, he does, so there you go. I grabbed my ParMana Designs Dream Awake bag and headed out.

It was grey and kind of rainy out, so it was a perfect day to wear my shearling lined lounger boots from LL Bean. My Vinrella wine bottle umbrella was a cool red shade keeping me dry as I walked to the Barclay’s area from my house. Yes- I live withing walking distance of the place that my brother said was too far away. Um, ok, I guess.

We met up at Shake Shack and ordered. I had eaten there once before and the burger was rubbery so I was not on their team at all. This time I got the DogMeister, the Brooklyn Pie concrete and a soda. Why are their sodas so small? My bro got the Shackburger and Cheese Fries. My concrete was already melted by the time we started eating and it was licqued when I finally got to it. Other than that the food was good. brolunch3

I had told him that I had a blog, but he was still wondering why I kept taking pics of everything. Where do people think the pictures come from? Invisible paparrazi? Anyway- I wore my LL Bean True Shape jeans with the lounger boots, and my usual bling from Lisa Hoffman Beauty and ShopJacquelineRose. My nails were still done from NYFW in Zoya Carmen red, so I had that go ing for me. brolunch4

My brother Anthony works for the city, and his style is more pulled together casual than mine. Here, he’s wearing a Tommy Hilfiger windowpane plaid shirt with dark wash relaxed fit jeans. His brown leather shoes are from Palladium Boots. It’s a kind of everyguy style that takes him everywhere. brolunch5

We went into Modell’s after lunch to look at sneakers for him to play basketball in. He didn’t end up buying anything, but I really liked these, especially the rabbit camo pair from Nike KD. I’d wear those, actually. They’re fun. brolunch6

Then we went into Guitar Center because my brother sings sometimes and needed a new microphone. Which gave me plenty of time for selfies. So now you can see the top of my outfit, which is my Life is good All Together Now tshirt under my fave discount store chambray shirt and leopardskin cardi. The Freeport Field Jacket from LL Bean.  Just hanging out. No makeup and those Grafton frames I love so much. brolunch7

Then we headed over to DSW to look at shoes, then over to Uniqlo, then to Kith where I noticed this Jason Markk sneaker cleaning kit.  Stands to reason that if you’re paying over a hundred for kicks, you should take care of them. brolunch8Then I walked back home, taking pictures all the way.

Next up: Eco-friendly fashion at the Nolche Verde event

the reality of MBFW, the sassy perspective of things.

So, as we may have figured out, I am a person who loves fashion but stil remembers that I am a flesh and blood person. maybe because I worked behind the scenes as a student and had some actual experience in how shows and events are put together, I’m not as bowled over as other people. Or maybe I’m now a jaded new Yorker (again). In any case- I loved loved loved knowing that I had a right to go to some shows, but I also had some other concerns.

Like how not to sweat through whatever I was wearing. (Massive, nasty, humid, HEAT WAVE for ss2015 NYFW/MBFW *historical notation)

nyfwrecap1

The first festivity was the Befohr party at the Jimmy Lounge at the James Hotel in Soho- which you guys already read an account of here. The reality is spending the evening wanting to go swimming, then heading home on the subway and window shopping on Nostrand Avenue when the train dumps you out on Flatbush (3 stops from where you need to be). This bag is to die, isn’t it? Love.

nyfwrecap2

This is me out at the table burning the hell up, but determined to gauge customer reaction to the addition of mauby to the table menu. I even offered free tastes. I sold a few, then ran home to glue myself together to go to Lincoln center for the Desigual ss2015 show (we already reviewed that here). SOOOOO happy to get a little glamor in my life, lol! Woo hoo!nyfwrecap3

I managed to get into this striped Daisy Fuentes for Kohl’s dress (which I had wanted since I saw it at the Fall Press Preview). I wore some cool pieces from Shop Jacqueline Rose (the illumination hand chain, the green oasis bracelet, and the black buddha mala for prosperity), and I made sure to carry my ParMana Designs Dream Awake shoulder bag. I love carrying things from people I know and like. It’s like having friends with me.

nyfwrecap4

After the show, there’s a mad rush- some towards the front row celebs, some trying to get backstage and some (like me) trying to go get some free beverages. These are just little moments that struck me on the way out. Nothing amazing, just images that brought things back down to a human persepctive after watching Adriana Lima bounce down the runway.

nyfwrecap5

I was photographing the SK-II installation and wondering if I could grab a bottle and run, when they offered to do something or other to my skin. As soon as I knew that there was a present involved I went for it. It was nice! The lady took my photo with some kind of tablet (it was a cute pic, wish I still had it, actually) and told me nice things about my skin. Then she gave me an SK-II pitera essence mask which I am still hoarding. I liked it, so if I have a sudden attack of aging, I’m set.

Then I just wandered around getting things. I got a card from the Papyrus kiosk (same guy as last year, but I guess the better location went to his head. He didn’t let me pick my card this season. he was nicer when he was way in the back and nobody paid attention to him). I checked out the Pandora spot, grabbed a bunch of reading material, stopped to gawk at the E! television set, and gawped over the pretty lit up dress on the Mercedes Benz stage. And thanks to the nice girl at Tresemme with the shiny hair who gave me the whole product spiel. I heart you!

nyfwrecap9 nyfwrecap91 nyfwrecap92

After that I did a little streetsyle. I was back to skulking, it’s too hard to approach people at the tents and I wasn’t really that interested- I just wanted t make sure I had a few things for the blog. A lady had on a silver foil pleated skirt that was like ice in the sun.

nyfwrecap93 nyfwrecap94

Then I went to the Met Opera Shop and picked up schedules for the new season. So many things I’d like to see! I haven’t been to the opera in a while- but check out my first visit here. I made sure to take a few photos of the fountain, and all the stuff I got. I know a lot of people don’t care about ‘the perks of blogging’, but I’m a results oriented person who needs rewards. Sorry. Also, I give stuff away. But for real- if they didn’t give me anything to keep… lol! my greedy ass would prob stay home. And people who say they don’t care are lying.

The next day I took my Desigual wallet/clutch to McDonald’s for my morning wi-fi and breakfast break.

nyfwrecap95

This is me the next day, back at my table. I’m wearing my fave BDG tshirt (cleavage looks perfs in it) as well as my usual bracelets and my new favorite skirt ever from Life is good. See that face? Fashion withdrawal. This was the last day I sat outside selling anything because MBFW makes everything else look small boring, and ugly by comparison. I don’t hate my business and I’m glad I spent the summer doing it, but now I felt like I needed to do better. Bigger. PRETTIER! Later.nyfwrecap96

I couldn’t wait to go to the Katty Xiomara show at Nolcha Fashion Week (see my review). I found a cute little lingerie shop to keep in mind for later, and after the show got some cool skincare samples from Adrian London. There was some moisturizer for men, but the boo doesn’t do skincare (yet.) so I’ve been using it on my hands and feet.

nyfwrecap97

After the skincare was secured (and an otter box iphone case which we may be discussing soon- shhhh! giveaway! shhhh!) it was time for drinkies. I got a Dasani and Don Q rum cocktail, a glass of sparkling (delicious) rose from Franciacorta, and some sorrel wine from Bellaforma. After that I was straight. Strolled home with my nose in the air, too cute for the rest of the world. Yep. I said that.

nyfwrecap98

I had a few days to rest and then I got an amazing invite from Red Door Spas to go BACKSTAGE (you guys heard all about this already… in 3 parts).  It was insane, and fun, and I got so many photos! It was the best.

nyfwrecap99

I had one last invitation, from a small designer named Indigo Apparel. I got myself together- but MBFW was over so… I did my super casual journalist look: Life is good plush terry sweatshirt. LL Bean true shape jeans, armful of pretties and my black buddha mala necklace. Threw on my Freeport field jacket and slouchy floral backpack for fun- even though it was still a little hot.

nyfwrecap991Ran for the train, made into the city, saw this amazing view from the top of the Empire Hotel– and then went home. It was crazy crowded, no one knew where or when the show was starting, and well- no open bar? Hmm.

I gotta go.

Next up: In which I go to Shake Shack with my little brother (Yes.) Stay tuned!

august recap continued… deliveries! aw2014 goodies from Life is good, LL Bean and Shop Jacqueline Rose Jewelry

You know how much I love deliveries, and August was chock full of them. I met some amazing people at Life is good back in June, and loved them so much that I had to have some items from their fall merchandise.

lifeisgood1

First off, the box was amazingly well packed. No packing materials, just everything neatly folded in a box that held everything snugly. No waste. Which is what you’d expect from a company that donates 10% of its net proceeds to charities that help troubled kids.

I fell in love with this All Together Now crusher tshirt (the neon colors made me think of Warhol) and this supersoft and plush Women’s Terry Beach Hoodie, which I tried on at the event and begged for. there is nothing like good quality clothing. I know that these pieces are going to last forever.

Everything was so soft, so comfortable, and so well made! I asked for the sapphire blue Men’s Hoodie Tee because I loved the color and the orange contrast stitching and hoodie strings. The terry beach hoodie, goes perfectly with my new grey sweatpants and the Vintage Denim Popover works with skirts, jeans or leggings. My fave? The Novella Skirt in deepest plum with a contrasting grey kickpleat. I LOVE this skirt. I can pull it on and look cute in about ten seconds. Oh, and don’t forget the adorableness that is the slouchy floral knapsack… big enough for books, groceries, an extra outfit? I wore this knapsack and the Women’s Love Creamy Henley Tee to the DKNY MYNY event in August, with memorable results.

I had barely finished trying on my new Life is good stuff, LL Bean sent over a delicious box of treats. The venerable American retailer is actually a treasure trove of cool pieces that any fashion savvy city dweller would love to own. Case in point? This Freeport Field Jacket. It’s feather light, and so perfect for layering, has an adjustable waist, and a zippered pocket on both sides for phone and change purse.

These tumbled leather Lounger Boots are way cooler than Uggs and just as ridiculously luxurious. That’s lamb’s fur inside. So soft. And it has the added attraction of being waterproof, with a rugged sole stamped with a chain pattern for traction. And, like the boots, the Signature 3/4 belt in Golden Guide yellow leather is so soft, it’s like buttah.

The LL Bean True Shape 5 Pocket Jean in slim fit? Uh-mazing. They actually come to your real waist, which is more flattering that low-rise. The back pockets are nice and clean and sit right on your butt. I love these jeans- they’re stretchy and comfortable, but I stand a little straighter because of the waist and that makes  me look a tiny but slimmer. You can tuck a shirt into these, and not have it flapping every time you sit down. You don’t have to worry about your panties showing, either.

And they’re comfortable- did I say that?

bean3

Cotton/cashmere Birdseye sweater. Soft, comfy, and yet you can do a little styling with this (as you’ll see later on this blog). You can put a shirt underneath, wear a down vest in a bright red or orange with it. Wear it with sweatpants, skirts, jeans, and when the spring comes you can pair it with shorts.

The last delivery, just in time for NYFW was from jewelry designer Jacqueline Ranieri of the ShopJacquelineRose website. I randomly dropped in on a #JewelryChat one day on twitter and Jacqueline contacted me later on asking to work with me. I was thrilled! her pieces are made in New York, and her path to Enlightenment collection is all about fostering inner peace and being conscious of the forces in the world that surround us. It’s jewelry that not only adorns, but heals.

Jacqueline not only donated her Eternal Flame stackable bracelet set for my MYNY/NYFW giveaway? She loaned me some great pieces to wear and style with for the blog- and let me keep a few for my own personal use. So sweet.

jacquelinerose2

I am deeply in love with the Ariel Charm Necklace (which I featured in my Dating Diary post last week). I got to wear the Illumination Hand Chain (a piece that actually corresponds with my birth sign) to NYFW, adding a little edge to my look. The Green Oasis bracelet has been on my arm almost permanently since I received it, balancing my solar plexus and heart chakras. The Black Buddha Mala for Prosperity is a symbol of abundance, power, and fortune and the little gilded horn in the pendant is for good luck.

Who doesn’t want that type of good energy when going to cut-throat fashion events?

Next up? Let’s go to NYFW! Photos and experiences from the Lincoln Center Tents and Nolcha Fashion Week.
