2014 in review: redesigns, parties, and standing next to Kelly Rutherford

So one time, six months ago, a pr lady told me that even though I had slaved over arranging, executing and promoting a photo shoot prominently featuring her clients products on prominent NY Fashion Bloggers- my numbers weren’t high enough for her clients to continue to work with me.

Ain’t that something? I had to take to my bed for two weeks from anger and disappointment.

After that, I decided to work on my ‘numbers’ and luckily, they got better. But I’m happier about the fact that people are enjoying my content than anything else. That pr lady can suck it.

Also? I had a lot of friends and worked with a ton of people who liked me more than my numbers. And I also got to stand next to Kelly Rutherford at the DKNY25 event, so…

Also, you may have noticed the the blog has a new look- that was an accident. I started messing around and then couldn’t  get it back to the way it was- so I just went ahead and committed to a new look for 2015.

So that was my year… I had fun. And oh yeah, the fricken numbers are up.

NUMBERS:

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2014 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

The concert hall at the Sydney Opera House holds 2,700 people. This blog was viewed about 8,600 times in 2014. If it were a concert at Sydney Opera House, it would take about 3 sold-out performances for that many people to see it.

in which i go drop off presents, run to the Carlton Hotel, and see Corporate Catwalk at the X by Trollbeads event

So last Thursday was another marathon day for this stay at home blogger. I had made some goodies for my former intern boss Janine Just, and then had to run to a last minute event invite where I was meeting ‘that guy‘ and then go on to the Trollbeads store for an X by Trollbeads celebration.

It’s nice to feel wanted.

thursdayevents1

So first, I got a packed homemade candy, pecan turtle cookies, and one bowl of lemon pudding cake (so hard to part with that) in a Pinch Me box and got ready to drop it off at the Alley for my old internship crew. Why? Cuz they invite me places like CC Pop. Ya gotta show love to your pr people. Blogger’s best friends!

I dropped that off, and ran for the next event.

thursdayevents2

Just to backtrack a little- before I ran out I did a 5 minute mani with my Probelle nail lacquer. Two quick coats of love me, then vivid night on my uh ‘accent finger’ with a quick brush or titchy overcoat from butter LONDON.  I wore my usual layers, it was cold, adding my Nikki Poulos dress from my 1st Anniversary fete at Caravan Stylist Studio– because I was headed over to the Carlton Hotel for their holiday party featuring a  holiday bazaar in the Carlton Hotel lobby.

unnamed

Got my photo taken while sampling some Volvic water, so that was fun.

thursdayevents3

As a guest of Bullet Acne Aid, we enjoyed La Marca Prosecco, got our photo taken in the Tic Tac lounge, got bags full of goodies, and then we strolled through the lobby looking at what was on sale.

carlton7

i would like to take a moment to mention these pigs in a blanket with mustard sauce. I had 5 while that guy lingered by the cheese table. Then we had some So Delicious dairy free frozen treats.  Ten I had another pig in a blanket, because they rule.

thursdayevents4

Then we walked through the gently falling New York snow as strangers bumped into us repeatedly. It was so amazingly romantic. We were grateful for the warmth, prosecco and cookies at the X by Trollbeads event. At their store, nestled on 6th Avenue near 38th, guests were met by Olivia Jeanette of Corporate Catwalk, who showed off the X by Trollbeads Collection.

thursdayevents5

We hung out and looked at beads, mingling with guests like Nicky Dror of Four Eleven blog. I got to see the manager, Kim, who was super enthusiastic about the fact that Trollbeads might be adding another store soon.

eventhaul

After all that excitement, I went home to poke through my haul. I had bottles of Elderflower presse from Belvoir Farms, Simple products for sensitive skin, Zoya nail polish, Cottonelle cleansing cloths, and lots of Tic Tacs. I ate all my NA fruit snacks on the train home, and my friend gave me a bottle of wine for Christmas, which was nice. We’ve only known each other since August, so it’s not like I deserve a ring or anything.

thursdayevents6

Then I wiped off my ‘no makeup’ makeup look (which involves every product in the bathroom) and made myself a dinner of striped bass, spinach, and roasted breadfruit.

Next up: the time I went to the MacDella Cooper Foundation‘s Ebola Benefit

1st weeks of July: the phone emergency, return to ordinary life, deliveries and prizes

The first week of July roared in and my lifted downshifted from the frenzy of the month before. However? there was a massive problem…

1stwkjuly1

My phone drowned in ice cream. Yes. I was bringing home stuff from the Caravan Stylist Studio event, and I had thrown two small tubs of ice cream that melted in my bag- planning to dispose of them on the way to the subway. Why? because the garbage cans at the studio were too small!

Anyway, I put everything in that LL Bean Everyday tote and forgot because I was talking to someone. I rode all the way home not thinking about it, thinking my phone and my camera were safely in my ParMana Designs bag. Got home, unpacked my tote, and then…found the drowned tech corpses. I’m still saddened and shocked by the whole thing. From living it up to completely DONE in one train ride.

1stwkjuly2

I actually did a blog post using pics from my Asus netbook! The camera is super janky and the res is so low, that’s almost worthless- but I had a job to do so whatever. Do or die, right? I actually like this selfie. I was trying to show off my Sinful Colors nailpolish in Sage Rose (which I got free from influenster.com in my SurfsUpVoxBox).

1stwkjuly3

This is the stuff that I had on deck to mess with the first week of July. There was my haul from Caravan, featuring MD Complete non-irritating pro peel and anti-aging eye wrinkle remover, plus two kinds of Fake Bake self-tanner. Then I got samples of youthglow and thirsty mud from Glam Glow Mud, Dove Oxygen Moisture shampoo and moisturizer from Pinch Me Box.

1stwkjuly4

Then out of the blue, with no effort on my part- I got an email offering me something. I THOUGHT I was just getting some free frames or something. Turns out that Glasses.com had just come up with their first exclusive collection called Kensington Road and they picked me to write about it! I thought that was cute, so I said yes. Next thing I new I got this huge package containing a box of tea from Harrods! I was like……huh? and  packet of chocolate covered digestive biscuits from McVities. um…what the what?

As I drank some Assam tea and munched the wickedly good biscuits, I read the press packet looking for clues. Well, the Kensington Road collection (which debuted on June 30th) was inspired by classic English frame styles. They actually sent a coupon for a free pair of glasses! Since I’m blind as a bat this was like manna dropping from heaven. We’ll talk more on this later.

1stwkjuly5

I was still moping about my phone and camera- but then I remembered that I had an old LG Romour phone hidden away somewhere, so that solved my imaging needs for awhile. I used it to photograph these cute Lisa Hoffman fragrance bracelets that a nice pr lady sent me. So cute! they sent a green jade bracelet with silver beads and a red jade bracelet with gold tone beads and 14k gold plated scent charm.

The charm holds the scent beads. The red came with Tunisian Neroli (a sort of spicy scent) and the green bracelet had French Clary Sage beads to put in it’s filigree sterling silver charm. I love them. They retail for $65, and I love the face that people with sensitive skin can wear scent safely because of the way that the fragrance is delivered. Really great gift.

1stwkjuly5b

I started on my (still upcoming) skincare/beauty roundup and got some more products delivered. I got a follow up package from Glo Science containing GLO antioxidant whitening toothpaste, GLO solo teeth whitening vials, and the Everday GLO teeth whitening maintenance pen. After you use the GLO Brilliant Teeth Whitening Device (you can read my review here) you still need to maintain your whitening results.

1stwkjuly6a

After all that rushing around, I realized that I had absolutely nothing to wear and I desperately needed to do the laundry. I had to overdress a little, but this pleated a-line spaghetti strapped sundress was $10 and it’s two years old. I wore my Lisa Hoffman fragrance bracelet in French Clary Sage, which is a fresh herbal fragrance. You can actually smell it as the bead filled charm warms up.

1stwkjuly6b

I got to use my Life is good Dockside Anchor Beach  tote for the first time. I mean it was just hauling laundry, but I did it stylishly and with optimism. As soon as I could I changed into a LOFT sweatehirt and my Cory Vines yoga pants and Catfootwear weavement sandals. Why? because I had to go grocery shopping…

1stwkjuly6c

This is all I had in the fridge. Some oranges, perfume, and my makeup case. Also nail polish.

1stwkjuly6d

I turned to that Everyday Tote again (I prefer to bring a bag and save a little tiny piece of the planet when shopping) and managed to get about $60 worth of stuff in it- including this lovely asparagus. Yes, that is King Arthur bread flour behind the asparagus. I bake a mean loaf and some pretty nice biscuits and crackers with that stuff!

1stwkjuly6e

I resolved to try and exercise with this Denise Austin book on Pilates. In case you can’t see the quote it says: ‘Never understimate your power to change and improve. You are a good person with wonderful qualities and you can reach your goals.’ How cool is that?

1stwkjuly6f

I made myself some food- this is the Meat, Egg, and Cheese Pancake that I created out of greed and ravenous hunger. It was good as hell. I also made my first cinnamon buns! They were absolutely delicious. I sold them at my Chubby Chubs table the next day to get them out of the house. I LOVE that I know how to make cinnamon buns. I feel like I really accomplished something. Here’s the recipe I use, from Domino Sugar

1stwkjuly7

I also managed to mail out some prize packages that had been sitting around the house. The prize packages from the Sniffapalooza/The Makeup Show blog giveaways and the twitter Life is good aw2014 NYC debut/First Anniversary giveaways. yes- I was that backed up.

1stwkjuly7a

Three year twitter follower Sean Salo (aka @Ebbhead) got the Life is good package which also featured some Chubby Chubs homemade 3 sugar caramel popcorn. yay, Sean!

tumblr_n8tuzjkamv1qi72kdo1_400

Lorie DelMundo got the First Anniversary/Life is Good/Influenster prize (female version) featuring Fake Bake, Zoya Carmen nail polish, and Sexy Hair Powder Play and Nikki Polous sexy retro 70s style silky strapless jumpsuit from Caravan Stylist Studio plus Hawaiian Tropic Silk Hydration After Sun Lotion and Not Your Mother’s Beach Babe Texturizing Shampoo and Conditioner from Influenster (came in that SurfsUpVoxBox free). She can carry all of it in her peachy Flower Dockside tote from Life is good.Yay for Lorie!

1stwkjuly9

While all of this happiness was going on, I was trying to get AT&T to send me a new phone. After contacting them on twitter, I found an address on the website for their Device Support center. I was going to get a replacement phone if it killed me.

Until next time!

What? I’m One Year Old! (and celebrating with the big girls at Caravan Stylist Studio)

I started my blog a year ago with a selfie and not much of a thought as to what would happen. I just thought, ‘whatever- it’ll give me a chance to show off my photo skills, get some writing done, more exposure.’ I had NO expectations whatsoever. A year later? I’m Sassy Ethnic Bohemian for real, and I kinda like it.

summerselfie

My first personal style post on Lucky Comunity, June 18th 2013:Summer Selfie Session . A discount store top and shorts, and my favorite scarf. A ring that I found in the street one day. A pair of fake glasses because I’ve worn frames like that since I was 12. One year later? This happens:

anniversary1

anniversary2

Getting ready to haul butt over to Caravan Stylist Studios in Manhattan to celebrate my First Anniversary (to the DAY, since this was June 18th) and also do a soft launch of my new treats,  called Chubby Chubs. OK, I might change tat later- but work with me for right now!. Wearing sleeveless linen Ann Taylor shirt, Khamra clasp necklace (thanks Hali from Hechizo!), the Aeropostale shorts that I found cheap at Lepoint Value Thrift, and my weavement sandals from Cat Footwear. I made sure to put on my Chuck Chuck bracelet for good luck, and smoothed my heels with Origins Reinventing the Heel. That black cardi is from August Silk.
anniversary3

I packed my Dream Awake shoulder bag (a lovely gift from ParMana Designs founder Sara Tarighi Murphy). I love this bag! The emerald color is a spirit lifter, and I know that I’m doing good for the economy by showing off Sara’s dream using fashion to give people jobs and pride in themselves. anniversary4

I decided on a birthday party theme, so it was toy rings and dinosaurs with cute polka dot treat bags and boxes from Jack’s 99 World on 40th (my favorite location). I had $10, and I got all the stuff I needed, plus tissue paper to keep it fancy. Lauren Napier was nice enough to send me a box of her new CLEANSE wipes, which have no odor and moisturize as they gently remove your makeup or travel grime. I ended up getting to display my popcorn and cookie stuffed boxes with adorable makeup bags from Le Sportsac! Talk about coming up in the world!

anniversary5

After a tortuously long train ride, i manged to finally get to the Carlton Hotel, where the Caravan Stylist Studio is located. So excited! Sometimes it’s hard to know if you’re making progress in your career, whether you’re a blogger or a certified public accountant. Being invited to do something like this was a milestone, and I was properly awed…anniversary6A

The first thing that they did was to offer me refreshments. I passed on the Volvic water, and headed straight for the enticingly pretty Belvoir Fruit Farms Elderflower Lemonade. Sweet tooth! There were bowls of Lancaster caramels everywhere, so I ate them. I’m such a little piggy sometimes, lol! This Infusion iced tea was also delicious. I tucked an extra one in my bag for later.

anniversary6B

Let’s take a moment to admire this table, ok? I loved seeing my popcorn and cookie treat boxes on display. I decided to start Chubby Chubs (and here will be a more ‘healthy’ Chubby Chubs Lite line of treats, too) because while I love blogging, it’s not something that you can really teach people to do and be successful at. I’ve been lucky, and I know that. But? If I can use my blogging to help start a business that will employ others, that’s real. I’ve been broke and unemployed lots of times, but I’m creative and well educated. I can use a simple thing like baking cookies to help other women help themselves out of poverty. This is the first step, in whet I hope to be a long and rewarding process.anniversary7

anniversary8

Ok, back to wonderland! There was a rack of clothing and they said, Oh, you can have whatever you want. YES. THIS ACTUALLY HAPPENED WHILE I WAS AWAKE!!!! Didn’t have to tell me twice. I picked an armload of things like soft cotton tshirts and coverups from Bobi (I have been sleeping in a long peacock blue dress of theirs for a week), a dress from Fashion Star alum Nikki Poulos‘ aw2014 collection, and a cute lightweight white rainjacket from Nautica. First thing I did? Change my shirt, hello! I threw on the softest softest tshirt in pineapple from Bobi. So comfy, and it was just right with my eggplant colored shorts. Kelly from Kryolan gave me a makeup lesson on how to make a cateye, so I got one in yellow to match my shirt. Meow!

anniversary94 Everyone was getting beauty treatments, like in my Superstar Barbie Beauty Boutique I had when I was young…except this was real. Blogger Tania Jen (the only other black girl  know that uses self-tanner) was getting worked on, and my friend Jaclyn Ling (who I gifted with a bottle of Desigual perfume from my Coney Island blogger shoot). NY Examiner Beverly Lim, looked adorable inher brightly colored summer dress. anniversary91

I actually met and had my nails done by Valerie Star, who works on celebrities, ok? And she was super nice. I got a deep green sparkly ( I love shimmer in nail polish) courtesy of Zoya nail polish in Edyta. But guess what? They also gave me nail polish in two pinks (Yana and Maya) and a sizzling red polish called Carmen.

anniversary92

My other favorite goodies? Well, I grabbed some Herban Essentials towelettes, which are saturated with aromatherapy oils, MD Complete‘s Non Irritating Pro-Peel and Eye Wrinkle Remover, and this luscious Soy Paste from Sexy Hair’s Healthy Sexy Hair collection. I’m so not spoiled, right?anniversary93

The next day, I went back with more goodies to give away, and wore the Bobi coverup over my favorite discount store bra ($1.79, yes). I was going for a 90s Dolce and Gabbana look, ok? Work wit me on this! It was sprinkling out, so I shrugged on the Nautica jacket, and of course my trusty zoia Cat Footwear sandals. The final touch was an homage to the first summer selfie of my blog life- the headwrap, and it’s the same scarf, too!

anniversary95

Guests! Cristina from Adventures in Polishland, Jaclyn Ling, beauty expert and journalist Grace Gold, and my former internship boss Janine Just (seen here with Karmela Alperez of Caravan Stylist Studio. Don’t they look great?anniversary96

One of my favorite guests was Nancy Osborne of Jack Blue Handbags, who I interviewed in 2010 when I was writing for the Fashion Spot. This was the first time we met! Nancy doesn’t know it yet? But I’m about to ask her for one of those cute cuffs she makes. She uses a lot of snakeskin, and all of her pieces are completely and totally handmade. Isn’t that cool? I love her bags.
