Day One: I manage to actually get up, but with barely enough time to get out of the house. So much for alarms. I made it to Industria a half hour after makeup and hair started.
I got a stress fix hand massage, which was actually amazing. It was like drinking coffee. I felt a lot better afterward, my hands were kind of greasy though.
This is me looking hangry because I left the studio to walk to the next event without grabbing a muffin. THEN it was too late to walk around and forage for food and too early to go to the next Aveda location. I just sat there and drank my water and thought about McDonald’s. This is my outfit, late chick chic. I grabbed my fave summer muumuu and my Gilligan hat first thing, then I filled in with this necklace from last year, my Ami Clubwear faux leather lock tote (looks like a Birkin, room for food and shoes), and my trusty slide on Squander boots from Cat Footwear. At least my feet didn’t hurt.
On my way from West 12th Street to 28th, I passed Milk Studios, the other great NYFW outpost. I passed Artists & Fleas, and remembered that I need to stop in there sometime.
I sat in this amazing public sculpture while waiting t go over to the Tibi backstage event. It’s this huge sort of puzzle…
But it has seats welded into it. It’s like plate tectonics brought to life.
After everything was over, I ate the lunch I scrounged from backstage and then I found this most awesome wooden box. It’s in my apartment right now. I put all my bags in it.
Day Two:I actually managed to get up and go to the track. I ran/walked for 2 miles and then it was time to go shower…
It took all this to get ready. So, yeah, my outfit was a skirt and a blouse because now I have no time for any crazy outfits. I decided to use my Makeup Forever Ultra HD Invisible Cover Foundation, since it was a dry day with moderate temperatures. I can honestly say that it does not feel as if you have makeup on. It’s like air.
I had decided on an Afro with a sparkly headband after seeing that display in the window of Artists & Fleas. I also wanted to try out my Pro Beauty Tools 1875 W Ionic AC motor hair dryer. I wet my hair and then sprayed it with Aveda Thickening Tonic and made a bunch of pin curls. I dried them most of the way, then left them alone while I piled on makeup. As soon as I was one step away from being dressed, I hit my hair with a cool blast of air from my blow dryer.
After I let all the pin curls out, I decided to see if blowing air through the diffuser attachment would help. It was kind of like running your fingers through curls, so at the end of the day it all worked out. I smoothed Aveda Brilliant Emollient Finishing Gloss over the whole thing and was done. Why go to all that trouble? Because I was going to the show, as ball players say. Going straight to Moynihan Station where NYFW was holding court. It was one of those days where you wanted to be dressed for anything. And I was dressed for whatever Public School NYC could dish out. I even had flipflops in my bag.
See? I might be blurry, but I’m THERE. And thanks to Still Standing foot spray I was finally getting to wear the Ami Clubwear floral peep toes that I’ve had since March. Can I admit to you that Ami Clubwear is my Forever 21? It’s cheap, fun and sexy. I can’t love them enough.
Also, dressing up gave me the confidence to dare to hang around and squirm my way into seeing the show. There was a platform, kind of like the Givenchy arrangement, where people could stand and watch but not interfere with the fashion set. So I basically saw the same show as Andre Leon Talley, the guy wearing sunnies and all black in the front row. I mean I was breathing in air that he had breathed.
So that was worth getting up early for. I downloaded these pics from Vogue Runway so you could see how cool the clothing was. Public School NYC did an amazing job of presenting an ss2016 collection that was eminently wearable. I die for the crocheted sweater with the thick black stripes.
When I came blinking into the sunlight, some nice people asked me if I wanted a ride to Soho, and the next thing I knew I was in the back of an SUV with a goodie bag and scooping Jolly Ranchers out of the cupholder. Stylight was out in full force picking up random fashionistas and getting them from Milk Studios downtown to 34th Street while jamming to hot dance music. I admit to laughing when they played Sexy Back.
I didn’t have another show, so I ended up hanging out at this place Mariachi’s with another backstage girl. The chilaquiles are heaven. The red stuff is chorizo, and it was like bacon’s sassy sister. Yum. So I finally did a fashion blogger thing and had brunch! And a beer- a Bohemia beer, no less.
That’s Sassy, y’all.
Day Three:
Just when you think it’s over, they pull you back in!
A last minute addition had me prepping to go backstage for the Chiara Boni/La Petit Robe show and I had already let myself slide since Sunday’s Public School show. I had to get back in the game with Mirai Clinical Purifying & Hydrating Face Wash and a quick Gin-Zing Refreshing Face Mask from Origins. I washed my hair with Be Curly Co-Wash and gave myself followed by the Be Curly Intensive Detangling Masque. Then the same steps as on Sunday. This time I used the Makeup Forever Ultra HD Stick Foundation, which left my skin kind of dewy. I really just wanted to wear my overalls. I wanted a louche 90s look, a cross between a raver and those chicks from TLC.
I freshened up my manicure with CND Vinylux Weekly Polish. every single color has sparkle to it. Those sandals are my fave Jasmine wedges from, of course, Ami Clubwear.
I threw these Kale Krunch snacks in my bag, because you never know. They taste like Cheez Doodles, but they’re healthy. Which is mind-blowing. My new fave habit is to pack a clear purse with essentials, like a pen, notebook, Still Standing Spray, asthma inhaler, tissues, Boscia charcoal blotting linens and a lens cloth for my glasses. Can I mention that the Kale Krunch and Boscia product came from my Stylight goodie bag? I did. A perfect day for Le Grand Hat, don’t you think? Kind of like Easy E, but with a sense of humor.
After covering backstage I made it home and looked at my trophies. I didn’t go tearing all over the city. I wasn’t followed by paparazzi or streetstyle photogs, but I had fun. I actually enjoyed Fashion Week for the first time since I came to New York and started covering fashion. And I got backstage! With my favorite beauty brand Aveda! I was living the dream!!!
Then I washed off all my makeup and took off my heels and stuff and went back to being me. Which is always the best part of all.
Next up: we go to Daniel Silverstain‘s ss2016 show and Nolcha Fashion Lounge

Sassy Ethnic Bohemian Goes To Cat Footwear Event And Has Moonshine (#Earthmover) #Girlonthego
by Sassy Ethnic Bohemian on Oct 11, 2013
That’s me in the headwrap, at the Cat Footwear aw2013 show I was at the library working on a story for my NY Fashion and Trends Examiner column when I got a message that there was a fashion event going on in Brooklyn. Being me, not looking my best was no deterrent from saying yes. I have that confidence going for me.
Chris Onseung and Ashley Rudolph, Kings County Distillery spirit gift set, goodies! The event was held at the Kings County Distillery, a gorgeous building full of history. The shoes and boots were scattered around the room, so it was kind of like a fashion-themed easter egg hunt.
The ‘Ashlyne‘, a sophisticated wedge style boot made for city streets. In additional to the usual catwalkers, Cat featured people they call ‘Earthmovers’, people who are working to make a difference in the world they live in. Like Alexi Panos and Tennille Armor- they started E.P.I.C, and are currently focusing on the clean water challenge.
Alexi Panos in the ‘Marin’ boot while Tennile sports a cordovan red ‘Corrine’ style. We were also treated to a surprise performance by country singer Tyler Hilton, who looked gorgeous in Agave denimshirt and jeans, which all he models wore. He sang two songs, from his new cd ‘Forget the Storm’.
Tyler Hilton with Danielle Zizak, Cat Footwear’s Vice President of Global Marketing On the trolley back (yes, there was a trolley just for us!) I got to sit next to the Ashley and Brett, who were both in the show. Now that’s fashion…

Sassy Ethnic Bohemian Attends The Women Helping Women Fundraising Luncheon And Meets Selita Ebanks.
by Sassy Ethnic Bohemian on Nov 21, 2013
Eboni Gates, William Cummings and Bernt Heiberg, and Selita Ebanks It was one of those days where you have to pinch yourself, and then blink a few times to be believe your good fortune. Last week, I was invited to attend the Voss Foundation’s Fourth Annual Women Helping Women fundraising luncheon. Held at the gorgeous Dream Downtown hotel, the foundation recreated their online African Bazaar to raise money for wells in sub-saharan Africa.
Guests were handed glasses of Solletico Prosecco as they wandered through the tables laden with beautifully produced goods from Liberia, Swaziland, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Kenya.
Kara Gerson, Executive Director of the Voss Foundation, Bonnie Young totebags. Selita Ebanks (the Women Helping Women honoree for 2012) was on hand to provide opening and closing remarks. Her rousing speech encouraged the audience to give, while gently poking fun of her own career modeling underwear for Victoria’s Secret. She wore a snowy white, wide-legged jumpsuit designed by Carlos Miele.
Yum: edamame ravioli, vegan wrap with root veggie chips, greek yogurt cheesecake. As guests ate, Kara addressed the struggle to find water in Africa: “Voss Foundation sees access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene as a means to enable community-driven development in Sub-Saharan Africa. Our philosophy is to look at the Ripple Effect of clean water – to see the many ways it can impact a community when we work with partners and beneficiaries to maintain the projects for years after implementation, to ensure sustainability,” said Kara Gerson, Executive Director, Voss Foundation. “One drop of water expands in all directions – by building wells and sanitation facilities we help the community improve its collective health, hygiene, education, finances, security, and relieve women and children, especially, of the burden of walking miles a day to collect water.”
Kara Geson, Deborah Hughes, Selita Ebanks Gate ‘Maya’ Haile Samuelsson, wife of chef Marcus Samuelsson, was designates as this year’s Women Helping Women Honoree. Although she couldn’t attend, the Vogue model’s efforts as founder of the Three Goats Foundation were roundly appreciated. Her foundation serves to give the people of Ethiopia the health services and development they so sorely need. I’m so lucky (no pun intended, lol!) to have been able to see and do so many wonderful things. It’s sad to lose Lucky Community, but I’m so very glad that I had a chance to be part of it.
