The Fourth

My family came here from somewhere else, but I was born in America. Arverne, Queens in New York to be exact. It was a tossup between here and London. I very nearly had a cute accent and addiction to PG Tips. Life is random that way.

Kind of like the day that the WTC got bombed. People were happy, or unhappy. Going about their day, working, talking on the phone, looking out of the window, loving life. Just being free and alive and unaware that hatred towards our country would end their lives and plunge lower Manhattan into screaming chaos.

This was my first visit to the 9/11 Memorial Plaza and it scared me to death to think about the devastation that this tranquil area represents. The sound of the flowing water trying to cleanse away the hatred and the hurt.

For me the worst part is the square the water flows into. I know it’s weird, but I think of all of those people and how their lives just disappeared into thin air, and in my mind’s eye I can see them all in there, under the water.

Staring at the sky and looking for planes.

Links à la Mode, July 14

Cropped this, cropped that. Floral here, floral there. And off the shoulder everywhere. It seems that these three fashion design elements have become essential to just about every outfit this Summer. Will they continue into Fall?

IFB bloggers didn’t just stop there where trends are concerned. They also showed off fringe, flowy shorts, and chambray. Add in a few good color stories on red, black, and what happens when you combine red with stripes, and you have the making of a complete Summer trend guide right here on our own little Links à la Mode. Ever wonder what it’s like to come out from behind the scenes, compete in a pageant, shop for fashionable plus size looks, or blend perfume in Paris. Yep, we have that covered too. And don’t miss the fun tutorial on minimalist nails and a lesson in handbag buying–a fake is a fake is obviously a fake, or is it?

in which we talk about what happened at #MetGala2015 (basically- Kimmy K. crushed it)

So everybody ran over to the Metropolitan Museum of Art this Monday to celebrate the opening of the China: Through the Looking Glass exhibit. As you may have guessed, the theme for this year’s Met Gala was…Chinese fashion. I woke up Tuesday and had about 10 emails telling me how great everyone looked, so I figured it was in my best interest to say something even though my invite was sadly misplaced.

Let’s jump into it…

 Better red than anything else:metgala7

1. Anna Wintour wore red, so obviously that was the shade to be in. 2. Amal Clooney had a sort of studded medieval corset thing happening among her, blood red layers- not exactly Chnese? But I’ll take it.3.Karolina Kurkova was supercute as Asia-inspired Barbie. I would totally wear that.

1.. Bee Schaffer, Anna Wintour’s lovely daughter, did mama proud in this trailing rose red and stark white confection of a gown. 2. Haylee Stenfeld in a really cute prom dress. EVERYONE girl her age will be wearing this look, it transcends budget. Red dress, gold/gold tone bangles, done. 3. Kris- what happened?

Jenny from the Block showed up with designer Donatella Versace in two, laying down the law with this barely there sparkly red gown. Here hair, styled by Lorenzo Martin for ghd North America, was the crowing glory of the look Says Martin  “Jennifer’s dress was going to make a statement, so I wanted to create sleek hair to accompany that look without taking the attention away.”

How can you do the same thing at home? Follow these directions:

“To begin, I parted Jennifer’s hair down the middle and dried it using the ghd hairdryer ($225) in the direction of the style while pointing the nozzle down. I then used the ghd eclipse™ styler ($245)and glided throughout hair with a comb to smooth out frizz. Jennifer’s hair is naturally curly, so with ghd’s patented tri-zone™ technology I was able to straighten her hair in less time for a sleek and shiny finish. Once completely straight, I used gel to pull hair back and brushed from top to bottom, then used a finishing spray to set the style.”

Now you know.

 Pale riders:metgala9

Lilly Aldrige played against her pale blue Carolina Herrera gown with a dark, grungy lip. Wanna copy? Makeup artist Quinn Murphy used Marc Jacobs Beauty Enamored Hi-Shine Lip Lacquer In Taboo 310 ($28).

metgala91   How crazy awesome does Rosie Huntington-Whitely look in this columnar peach gown? She would have owned the red carpet entirely if this hadn’t happened:

And the world just stopped. It was a perfect look, perfectly executed- and also reminiscent of her wedding day! Kim floated up the red carpet like the loveliest swan imaginable- and no one could deny that she was the best dressed, best coiffed, and the makeup was flawless.

Makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic worked with Kimmy K, creating a look that  mimicked the glowing and simplistic palette of the dress and keep it monochromatic. “We wanted to stay true to Kim’s classic look and enhance her natural beauty and golden, glowy skin.”

Usng Marc Jacobs Beauty products exclusively, Mario used the #Instamarc Light Filtering Contour Powder ($38) in Hi Fi Filter 60 in the hollows of the cheeks, around the hair and jawlines and on the sides of the nose. On the eyes, Mario maintained the nude and crystal color palette by applying a wash across the entire lid of the silvery Twinkle Pop Eye Stick ($28) in Frannie, followed by layers of the matte and shimmery peach tones in the Style Eye Con ($59No. 7 Palette in The Dreamer to set it and give it a more nude-based tone. In the creases of her eye, Mario used a dark brown shade from the palette very lightly, and then took the golden Twinkle Eye Pop Color Stick in Au Revoir to the brow bone and lower lash line of the eyes to add some sultry sparkle.

To finish of the eyes, Mario applied the Highliner Gel Eye Crayon in Blacquer in a very thin line on the upper lash line, followed by a very slight wing to stay aligned with the MET Ball theme, and added a final hint of the golden sparkle to the inner corners of the eyes using the Highliner Gel Eye Crayon in Mari(Gold) to enhance the natural gold in her eyes. And finally, on the lips, Mario achieved Kim’s go-to nude lip look with a warm nude tone of the New Nudes Sheer Lip Gel in Anais.

We’re gonna keep going, but let’s be real- she finally proved that she is not going anywhere.

 Golden goddesses:metgala4

1. Naomi Campbell sizzled in this gold sequin strewn stunner. Supermodel of the world was werking! 2. Adorable Australian model Courney Eaton was perfect from her headress to her the hem of her golden brocade gown.3. Anne Hathaway showed up and she was wearing this. (No, I am not a ‘Hathahater’, but she usually does better than this. Maybe it looked incredible in person?)

Kete Hudson shimmered in gold lace with a delicate head adornment in keeping with the Chinese fashion theme. David Babaii, Brand Ambassador for ghd, North America created a hairstyle that worked with the Micheal Kors designed gown o create ‘an ethereal look’.

Conversely, everyone’s favorite redhead, Jessica Chastain, went for screen siren sexy in this Givenchy mermaid gown. Ryan Trygstad tells us how to get the look at home:

“First, I dried Jessica’s hair using a round brush and the ghd air™ hairdryer which with
technology, gives a frizz-free finish. I then created a deep side part and used the hd eclipse™ styler to smooth over strands, while curling under at the bottom. Starting from underneath the hair, I then wrapped 2 inch sections of hair around the ghd curve™ classic curl iron, and used my fingers to slightly comb through.

The ghd eclipse™ styler and ghd curve™ classic curl iron ($196) both feature ghd’s patented tri-zone™ technology which creates long-lasting styles, in less time, without the need for styling products. To finish the look, I pinned curls underneath to create a ‘faux bob’ and
brushed hair to one side of the head in order to show off Jessica’s gorgeous jewelry.”

Black is the new black:

If it’s not broke…no matter what the occasion, black is always appropriate and can act as a welcome respite from more hectically colored looks. 1. Janelle Monae is beautifully monochromatic in Chinese inspired couture- and with a signature red lip. Her braided style is to die for. 2. Jennifer Lawrence went with a 70s inflected dress, with only a smattering of flowers across the yoke of this black skirted gown.

3. Imogen poots did a sort of  Victorian look in this sheer Alberta Ferreti gown. Melanie Inglessis, for MAKE UP FOR EVER gave Poots an almost vampiric look, with pale skin and red rimmed eyes. Her inspiration? INSPIRATION: “Imogen’s gorgeous lace dress had a Victorian feel, so I wanted to capture this look for her makeup while giving homage to the Met
Gala’s theme of Chinese fashion.”

It’s sort of punk, and I like that Grab these Makeup Forever products to create the look on your own: PRODUCTS: Step 1 Skin Equalizer Mattifying Primer ($36); Mat Velvet + Matifying Foundation #30 ($48); Super Matte Loose Power in #12 ($28); EVER Aqua Brow in #20 ($20); Aqua Cream Waterproof Cream Color #8, #9 ($23); Artist Shadow #I-752, #M-846 ($21); Diamond Powder #11 ($25); Smoky Extravagant Mascara ($24); Flash Color #24, #25 ($99)

4. Ming the Merciless was also in attendance.

Fashion you can actually buy:

There’s always room for budget conscious fast fashion these days, and the red carpet at the Met Gala got hit hard when Hailey Baldwin and Bella Hadid sashayed in with these Chinese dresses from…Top Shop.

I was on Fifth Avenue today and say them in real life. You, too can have a dress that was at the Met Gala. Live the dream…and get these shoes, because I am in love with them. You can also make sure that your brows are on fleek like these two Tweezerman Browmousse ($12);Tweezerman Brush iQ Brow Brush ($12)

metgala92Is this not fashion for the people? I love it… Topshop Collection Chinese inspired dresses on sale now.

in which we get a look at the boohoo aw2015 collection and #WeAreUSA campaign

So remember last time, when we went over to boohoo clothing to see the men’s aw2015 collection and glimpsed this tray of jewelry? They were sweet enough to give me some info on what’s coming for the ladies both for ss2015 and aw2015!

because SEB is awesome.

I got a copy of their newsletter, boo hoo Stylefix, which broadcast their summer social media campaign #WeAreUSA- featuring Angel Hayes,  and forecast the trends of the coming hot weather season. Be on the lookout for a Mexican and Western American influence, blue and white are hot, lace, and stealing from the boys in minimalistic, clean-lined pieces.

This summer, the London based retailer has focused on the multifaceted nature of the millenial female, showcasing hip/punk, sweet Lolita, and athleisure styles on people like dj Hannah Bronfman. The prices are hyper affordable, and a community has sprung up around the #WeAreUSA hashtag. Biggest trend this summer? Being who you are.

For the aw2015 collection the forecast is 70s. Leather look dresses with grommets and blouses with pussycat bows, instant sophistication. Also loving this plaid coat which is sweet without being sugary.

Jump ahead to the 80s and the red neoprene motorcycle jacket with sleeve grommets can work with the fringey skirt or the denim outfit. Loving how the denim top works a frayed edge into the equation. bhw3

boohoo Night is a sexy collection of tailored, bodycon dresses and jumpsuits with cutouts and embellishments for serious holiday party appearances. Stay warm and cozy under this furry overcoat. Don’t forget your mittens!

the Sassy Valentine’s Day Gift Guide! #loveispossible…with the right presents

I am a ‘treat yoself’ kinda person, so while I guess it would be fair to do presents for guys? You need to go to a men’s blog for that.

I emailed and begged and harassed pr people across America and came up with some awesome goodies that would make the perfect treats for you. Rest assured that unless otherwise noted all goods are Sassy Tested and Sassy approved.

1. Loving this Ink Liner from Makeup Forever ($23) for flirty cat eyes that go perfecty with Kiss Products fluttery false eyelashes ($3.99). Pump up the volume on your real lashes with Ellis Faas E401 mascara in E401 ($34).

2. I love these Kisstixx ($5.99), which I got in a PinchMe box at the Anniversary party. One lip balm is sweet and the other is sour- put your SPF 15 coated lips together to create a whole new flavor. Cute, cheap and fun.

3. Violets and roses abound… literally give love with Jurlique’s Love Balm ($10) which smells heavenly and moisturizes winter dry lips. Boscia’s pretty violet packaging is wrapped around Peppermint Blotting Linens ($10) which help you stay fresh and pretty by soaking up excess oil and cutting down on facial shine. How awesome would eyes framed with purple lashes? This Arbonne Royal Purple mascara is discontinued, but Sephora caries a wide range of them. Play up those eyes with Origins Peeper Pleaser powder eyeshadow ($17.50), deep color for defining creases or creating a violet-hued smokey eye.

Yum! 1. Yes, I still have my sample of DKNY MYNY! (starting at $24) I love the sexy scent with topnotes of raspberry and pink pepper. Kat Burki‘s Ile de la Cite inspired Tuberose ($115) is a soft romantic scent that slowly seeps into your heart. I black/white/red image on the bodycology Scarlet Kiss fragrance mist ($3.97), it’s so 50 Shades, right? A great fresh smelling blend of pomegranate peach and warm vanilla.

2. The Parisian Charm fragrant body mist ($6.99) from classic brand Calgon is an enchanting and not overly sweet floral that smells rich without the big price tag.

3. My idea of the perfect present? Get a  heartstrewn giftbag from some place like Deals and fill it with love. An Ariel charm necklace from ShopJacqueline Rose ($115) with it’s warm rose quartz agate stone is string on a 14k gold filled chain and is named for ‘the ultimate humanian archangel’. Include a faceted glass bottle of Kat Burki’s Tube rose ($115) and a bottle of Jurlique’s Rosewater Balancing Mist ($35). This is basically what I would get myself- and probably some lingerie from Intimacy.

If you’re not into spraying on fragrance, or if you like to layer your scents there are matching body lotions available for my three new favorites:

1. Calgon Parisian Charm skin moisturizing body cream ($6.95) is so thick and rich you would swear it costs twice as much. You end up with the softest skin- creamily soft. I’d say this is a bargain and a #winner and a  #winter2015musthave. You get so much for the money.

2. If you love the Tuberose eau de parfum, than you definitely want Kat Burki’s  Tuberose body creme ($62), which you massage in after taking a bath. It’s almost hedonistically moisturizing but without being greasy.

3. bodycology offers the Scarlet Kiss moisturizing body cream ($3.97) in a fun, sexy package just naughty enough to appeal to those 50 Shades of Grey fans.

1. This gorgeous Chloe and Isabel Crystal Strand Statement ($58)headband/hairband is also a necklace- and so princess. It doesn’t squeeze your head and looks super cute with braids. Ok, my friend Kelly Hodrick who sells Chloe and Isabel these gave me it to me. AND I LOVE IT.

2. Sparkly little rhinestones are entwined with the cloth band of this Nolita watch from Rumbatime ($60) which of course makes it completely perfect. You can be casually glam, my favorite thing.

3. This is one of my favorite brand gifts from last Holiday Season. This Lisa Hoffman goldtone chain link bracelet ($65)features a disco ball of a sparkly pendant that you can detach and it comes with 6 fragrances to mix and match. It has this fun retro feel and it goes with everything.

Stuff that sticks in my head…

1. A sweet card with gold hearts and lettering? Yes, please!   2. I’ve actually used the Equitance product sampler kit and it’s a sweet deal for $37. You get a lot of the cleanser and toner in perfect gym sized packaging.

Shameless self promotion! I actually designed this heart graphic made of tiny stars for Valentine’s Day. You can get it on a  phone case, tanks and tshirts, and it looks super sweet on this totebag. Check out my store at and for these and other exclusive sassy designs.

1. This is what I get for going to the Completely Bare Market– I think everyone should have a cute little vibrator from My Secret Luxury.

2. You can put it into this new accessory from my fave independent designer Jacqueline Ranieri of Shop Jacqueline Rose. This is not just a clucth, but a sweet crossbody that barely weighs anything and enhances your outfit. She gave me this one yesterday and everyone wanted it. The clutch with sparkling healing gemstone on the front is $45 and should be available online soon.

3. You can also store your Oscar de la Renta Oscar Flor ($78) is isnpired by gardens and features ingredients like mango and neroli in the top notes, with a hint of sweet jasmine and musk.

Harlow & Fox

Decadent, luxurious, sensual lingerie from Harlow and Fox? You need it whether you have a Valentine or not. This is from the Augusta Scarlet collection, fringed robes, and garter belts in sensuous scarlet silk. *Designed specifically for sizes DD-GG.

Happy Valentines Day, everyone!
